Sorry, we were using this promo video for a performance of the two bands, but this video is only of Return to Forever. I will update the title now that the show has already happened.
@pineappaloupe Thanks for the recommendations! I'll look into those albums. I've definitely gotta get up to snuff with my Zappa. I adore romantic warrior but don't know either one of those Zappa albums. I only JUST learned how closely he worked with Vinnie Colaiuta--the only other drummer who's ever impressed me by his sheer virtuosity as much as Dave Weckl has. That's impressive to me!
@happystance9able If you like Romantic Warrior, a lot (like have all of the changes memorized) you will dig the song Inca Roads by Zappa. It is an intricate arrangement with a lot going on and a lot of abrupt transitions. And you will probably get off on the keyboard work. Hots Rats is basically a jazz/blues album.
I have all of the albums mentioned memorized, have been listening to the Zappa ones for over 2 years, almost weekly, and still get my mind blown. Enjoy.
@pineappaloupe Thanks. To return the favor, I offer you a suggestion of my own. Try to memorize all the unison riffs and solos of this tune:
watch?v=AqdlkTlfl6o
It's one of Chick's very best. Underneath the great, flamenco-influence is something with the grandeur of the Bach D minor Chaconne for unaccompanied violin. It's LATED-PERIOD Corea. Something like late Chopin. It's RICH.
@pineappaloupe Hmmmm Not sure why you're having trouble. I jsut checked them and they work fine. Mind you: They aren't complete links. They're both youtube vids starting from "watch?...". Keep everything to the left of "watch?" the same as in this vid's address, including the slash. Here they are again:
watch?v=AqdlkTlfl6o
watch?v=lEZ3CSuyB1A&NR=1
I'll also favorite them so you can see them on my channel if you like.
Yes - Chick looks and sounds great and the band is SMOKIN. What a great billing! I saw Hammond and Indianapolis back to back. great shows. Get out there and see these guys! Chick is 70 and JL Ponty is 69 and they are ON.
@Rajhoul Don't worry. I looked into it last year and learned that he had been having some skeletal trouble with the weight--hips or something--so he gave himself a complete makeover. Heard him play solo piano recently and he was in top form. I can personally confirm, having hung out with him backstage with a bunch of other diehard fans, he's in as good shape as he's ever been. That concert bettered my life. He's also a wonderful human being--just couldn't be a nicer person. He's my hero!
Where does ZPZ come into the picture? Great video though...

What the heck does this have to do with Zappa? This is Corea's RTF.

@pineappaloupe But the music is all Corea's.

@happystance9able i think there are a lot of similarities between romantic warrior and zappas albums like 'one size fits all' and 'hot rats'.

@pineappaloupe Of course, here's Chick with Vinnie:
watch?v=lEZ3CSuyB1A&NR=1
But the Corea-Zappa connection is only very indirect. They never played together, did they?
