  • Back in 1996, when A&E really was Arts & Entertainment, they showed a documentary called "Floating Palaces".............does anybody know what ever became of that? Never been able to find it anywhere online or on DVD. I would love to see that again...........it was amazing!

  • Everything they say in this video is TRUE! I did a TRANS-ATLANTIC crossing this past April. I was a Britiania stateroom, but there was no difference in service levels I have seen. The small stateroom was all I really needed, as I was only IN IT for LESS THAN 10 HOURS per DAY! My cabin steward actually CHECKED on me during the end of the fourth day, because I never called him for anything (I discovered that it is not unusual for him to be called at least once in the early part of the trip).

  • Cunard is simply the best producers of the floating palaces on earth until now..truly a magnificent!

  • NO OTHER CRUISE LINE BEATS CUNARD! All their Ships are FLOATING GRAND PALACES! Can you imagine all their ships are christened by ROYALS?

    and for those that keep yakking on about carnival lines consider this - Toyota has Lexus and Mercedes has Maybach and Carnival has Cunard thats all im saying :-)

  • No offense but your comparision is not a strong one. In the case of Mercedes their Maybach has ZERO resembelance to the rest of the fleet. it is marketed as one of the most exclusive, low production and unique autos in the world. Carnival does no such thing with its fleet. Carnival is a quantity cruise line, not quality. Toyota's Lexus while sharing SOME resembelance to Toyota has successfully grown its own image in the market. A more expensive version with far too many differences than

  • True. True. Very True, Dougpeerless. And you know, without Carnival we wouldn't have the Queen Mary 2 and Cunard could have possibly gone out of business! Carnival really has been generous with Cunard and has really given them a re-vamping!

  • With all respect to Cunard´s traditon and reputation, the Italian and French Lines (their old liners Michelangelo, Raffaello, Leonardo da Vinci and the SS France), offered the best service and food and sea. Not only that, but their liners were much better looking and elegant inside and out.

  • Really? In that case anyone who loves Cunard will also love Princess because they are responsible for services on Cunard. They manage all the service aspects for Cunard! Cunard is Cunard as seen by Carnival Cruise Lines. Like the rest of their brands their ships are watered down carbon copies who's only difference are the names on the bows. Which can be changed and swapped to other brands when needed.

  • Technically Princess cruises can match and possibly exceed the services of Cunard. Since, as you know, Princess Cruises manages Cunard and runs the operation. Carnival has taken the path well travelled with their management of all their brands and while commercially successfull Carnival is paying a price for it. The "sameness" that dominates their business is not going unnoticed (the Victoria is an example of a total blend of existing designs with a new name on the bow). A boring operation.

  • You're right about most of what you said, homeric 9, but I disagree with your last statement of 'A boring operation'. Cunard will always be surpreme in my mind, always the best. I think something also has to be said about who travels on ships. What would the QE2 be if no one with a title sailed on her? As long as Cunard continues to attract their usuals then they will be a cut above the rest.

  • With all due respect to Cunard and its long-standing tradition, the Italian and French Lines were without par. And their ships were by far (the Raffaello, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, SS France) were the best looking and sleekest ships. The early Queen were not really good looking. The QE2, on the other hand, is gorgeous and up to par with the aforementioned liners. As for the QM2...well, she looks like a bull dog. Size is not everything.

    What unusual taste you have! Most people hate the exteriors of the Michelangelo and Raffaelo and prefer the Queen Mary and Elizabeth.

  • Peplicus, I am in complete agreement. I was on the maiden voyage (the REAL maiden voyage, not the Carribean or later ones), and the Mary is too damned big. You had to hike literally a quarter of a mile past hallways of stateroom doors to get from any activities in the bow to those in the stern.

  • The QE2 is a LADY, and the last of the transatlantic liners of the golden age. She is the only ship I know of that actually LOOKS like a ship. I am going on her last transatlantic voyage in October (been on the wating list for that for over a year, and I'm going QUEEN'S GRILL!!! - which means something to those who know), and I will miss her dreadfully.

  • There may be other liners out there, but none with this level of mystique. She's truly a national treasure!
