Wing Chun practitioners are the most arrogant bunch of people around. Yet they can't even show one video of a wing chun guy winning against another martial artist.
@gorfjorf2112112 are you real, people dont have to practice the full form of wing chun to be classed as wing chun, some MMA like PJ Ben uses wing chun in their striking.
@gorfjorf2112112 Wing Chun is street fighting. Like Jeet Kune Do, Ninjutsu, even some Sambo, Savate and Karate. There is no way to truly compare two martial artists unless both intend to kill each other. MMA is just silly, because it pretends to be something its not. It's a sport, not martial arts. In a real fight, technique matters a lot more because it's easier to harm a person without so many rules to protect the combatants. Fighting is about injury, death and pain. Not safe competition,.
@fierynox sure some people only focus on the more "dirty" techniques & tactics but i really doubt every serious martial artist will end up killing someone in a bar fight. I practice traditional MA so don't pull that card. Also old kungfu masters that touched hands would gladly own you without killing you. I'm sure Ip Man and countless others didn't kill people to get students. Competition is fine as long as ppl realize theres more to the art than just the ring.
I agree but what I think you're missing is that even in a bar fight, regardless of whether or not you decide to use a technique once the opportunity is there, you are still accounting for everything your opponent can do. That includes weapons, buddies, biting, pressure points, etc. The human body is a lot more vulnerable than MMA would lead once to assume. In MMA, in every case that someone attempts an inside thigh kick and ends up aiming too high, the other guy just freezes and looks at the ref
@fierynox You got to understand MMA COMPETITION is a SPORT and such people are looking to gain points however they can so certain things they do don't pertain to self defense. As far as missing something. I didn't. Sure you train with all these "illegal" elements but at the end of the day you don't have to gouge out a guys eye or kill a man every time your skills come out. And anybody who is alive who challenged a TMA master and lost is proof of that.
brucee lee disrespected his sifu yip man, bruce lee only new two form, thats why he invented jeet kune do.. to be his own master.bruce lee dose not know all the forms two wing chun!!!
@shua559 well considering he got into a huge fight and left to the US, there are only 3 forms done by hand, and plenty more forms with the wooden pole, the butterfly knife, twin short swords, and wooden dummy. And if you listened to one of his interviews, he said that his style was inspired by the words of his first master Ip Man. Please be a little more informed before criticizing.
@MrChumFm bruce lee only knows two forms.i know there is 3 forms who is criticizing??i love this art i kno wing chun my self..bruce lee is the one u should be pissed at he disresepcted ip man.dont be stupid learn ur history before tryn to insult..
@shua559 "only" implies that is very few forms. again, he didn't disrespect ip man, but payed respect to him. The only reason why you assumed that he didn't like ip man is because he smoked...
@kr8dle Actually a Kung Fu magazine in the mid eighties stated that Bruce had a match with a Northern Mantis Stylist and had to chase him down to eventually win the match. Bruce felt his Foot work was not good enough and incorporated other styles and theories, which led to JKD. If anyone has any articles on this please forward. Thnx
WSL was a fighter first and foremost. He wa never a "slave" to the art and thus it is natural that he used wider punches. I am pretty sure that there is a video on Youtube of him explaining it.
Unless one is fighting someone with a very tight structure, Pak mei or bamboo mantis style for example, there is no need to be too tidy in your strikes.
If Bruce was using big kicks, why would WSL be using tidy yat jic punches?
it's cool to notice that even in death, Bruce made a big difference to some people , and for the better. In this case, that guy's school has more business, as he said, a great deed heheh...
"He always taught us straight fist, but his punch wasn't that straigh. It wasn't straight when he fought with others. I saw him intending to attack Bruce's leg, but the punches were not straight." What does he mean "the punches weren't straight" - is he saying that WSL did not use the centerline punch in practice?
@XuZhangWang Maybe he knew Bruce would be expecting the straight punch so he mixed it up with hooks and crosses. Wong Shun Leung was a boxer before he learnt WC afterall.
I am disgusted as this guy is considering Bruce Lee's image being to be just an actor...hehehe huhuhu..this smiling it should means to be....".I was there" he says....who can tell this guy was there???Let have respect for Bruce Lee's memory!
@Malchek73 I don't think he said "just an actor". He did say he was good actor, but that didn't necessarily suggest he wasn't a good martial artist. Besides, before that he was speaking pretty highly of Bruce Lee's fast kicks.
@Malchek73 You have completely misunderstood what Sifu Wan was saying. He said, " My master was a great martial art master too ", which means he thought Bruce Lee was a great martial art master. He also complimented Bruce's kicks saying they were really beautiful and really fast, then went on to say he was a very good actor. What part of that is disrespecting Bruce Lee's memory?
Most westerners I come across, even many chinese don't appreciate the meaning of the term Sifu and how it relates to the " master~disciple" relationship. In fact sifu means more than father it also means master teacher. Like jdiddy I usually only take kung fu lessons from Chinese masters because to me it's more than just fighting. There's philosophical, historical and cultural elements which need to be preserved and passed on. This is what motivated Bruce Lee. In the Tao De JIng it says...
"the way is there for all to see yet no one follows" Gong fu or wushu follows the way of nature and it's laws and principles. Where you come from on this planet makes no difference. The principles are the same. No one race can have claim over them. Having said that, each race will express the principles differently adding their own flavour. If we choose to follow the chinese way we should respect the heritage and pass it on. Part of that includes the associated words including the term sifu.
a good story about the teacher (Wong Shun Leung because, technically, Bruce Lee learned Wing Chun more with Wong than with Yip Man) and student (Bruce Lee). They are two of the best street fighters (or rooftop fighters) that ever lived.
@jdiddy666 what a racist opinion. its the person and his skills that matters, not the skin color or race. there are many western people who are at the very top of various martial arts. just because they dont live in a jungle or a monastery doesnt mean they cant be as good as the asians
@MuayThaiViking Drop the emotionally weak 'racist' term. If you want to call your white instructor 'sifu', then fine(weird, but fine), but for him to call HIMSELF by that name would be either laughable, or simply pathetic.
There are very, very few real Sifus left. The whole CONCEPT belongs 100% to Chinese culture.
@fubokuen bullshit. Sifu simply means father, and you call your teacher sifu because it symbolises respect between him and you. and i got much respect for my old instructor, doesnt matter that im danish
if you think thats laughable then you are the pathetic person here.
how do you define ''sifu''?? what makes you think there are very, very few left? hell, do you even know the meaning of the word? whats so bad in keeping traditions, nomatter your nationality? you make no sense right now
Okay, I'd just never call my MA instructor, "Father". It's just not my culture and I have no right to pretend that I'm continuing someone ELSE'S culture. A respectable "Sifu"(or, Shifu) would be an older Chinese man that knows herbs, bone setting and healing, as well as a gungfu system.
Someone to look up to and worthy of the TITLE.
Anyone using the title to describe themselves is probably unworthy.
But that's just me, you are free to call anyone 'sifu that you please.
and sifu means both. there are several chinese letters for sifu, one means father the other teacher or master. but they are pronounced the same way, and in english both is spelled sifu
@MuayThaiViking They're not pronounced the same way, Chinese is a tonal language, there are four tones, its easier for you to understand it as such, flat, dipping *tone goes down, then up*, rising *tone goes up* and quick descent *quick harsh decent*.
Sifu for master is pronounced in the quick descent tone, perhaps you misinterpretted what someone said? because I've been raised by chinese and I don't think I've heard any of my brother call my dad "Sifu".
@GabbysMyKittyRawr all i know is what ive been taught in WT-scandinavia (wing tsun). if u are chinese then i wont bother arguing. just find it wierd that the instructors got so basic things wrong
@MuayThaiViking in Chinese martial arts, Sifu, or masters are respected as your fathers, because often students would live in the Kwoon or School, and their martial arts teachers became like their parents, perhaps this is what you mean?
@RichhhR Thanks mate, but I do speak a bit of Cantonese, lol, but I'm just making an example of how much people respect their Sifu in China, its not like in other places, they respect/revere their masters like they do for their fathers, Cheers mate.
Master Wong and Bruce NEVER fought! They sparred on many occasions but Lee was always the student and respected that even to the extent that Lee wanted to finish his Wing Chun training eventually.
humm....by Bruce's admittance, he was bruised up bad in the face by Wong.
Heard the story how Bruce got early at school, to tell other classmate the classes were canceled, so he would get private sessions for free...Wong whooped his ass when he found out.
Sifu Wan is saying he was present with his Sifu when they had a light sparring session. Bruce had very fast kicks but Sigung Wong had very fast hands. But ultimatly Wong Shun leung did teach Bruce. As they say you never beat your heroes you listen to them!
probably seeing as hes died undefeated, but Bruce was a genius, but i dont get this video what is he saying that bruce and wong had a full on fight, wouldnt one of them be seriously injured?thanks for the reply, thank god youre not one of those wing chun haters, who complain its ineffective.
