I'm new to cloth diapering, considering it as an option for baby due to arrive near Christmas. I'm curious, is specialty detergent really a necessity for washing, or is it a matter of personal preference? We live in an area with REALLY hard water and rent our house so no possibility of being able to install a water softener. We are generally satisfied with our detergent for everything else, including cleaning up toddler accidents, but I'm not sure how diapers would differ.
@momofmalia Rockin Green Detergent has a detergent that is great for cloth diapering and has a formula for hard water! Check them out just google Rockin Green Detergent! You can order samples first!
My nappies are so freaking gross. They stink even without pee and are burning the kids bums, plus are leaking etc etc. I've done several different strips and am at a loss of what to do now. Help :/
@rachiibuu Boil them. Works every time. Just be careful of what you are boiling and how long. I boil the inserts, prefolds, fitteds, and soakers (anything PUL free) for 20 minutes. Every cloth diapering mother (father?) will tell you that you should never boil pockets, AIO/AI2, anything with PUL as it can ruin the PUL, but I have done it a few times in the last few years and never had a problem and I would not do it as often as non-PUL items....a few minutes at the most. Be careful of snaps too.
@rachiibuu Ran out of characters. Snaps will melt if they touch the hot metal, so I always fold them into the diaper and not exposed. If you are afraid of boiling and it is possible, turn up the water heater...just be careful of when LO's are in the bath (obviously). Also, google until you find answers.
What does your child wear while you are stripping your diapers? Do you put him in disposables or strip your diapers in two batches so he can wear cloth?
@NaturalMama85 I've kept 2-3 diapers out and just tried to rinse those a couple extra times after my stripping. Or even used prefolds which i don't use very often. I also have a cheaper brand from ebay which i hate to use, but I call them my Wash Day diapers.
I totally have to strip my CD I read some article said to use RLR Laundry detergent I actually was able to find it in my local supermarket.Do u know anything about this product or anyone who has used it ?
love this because i've decided to CD and have bought my stash but really, have no idea how to properly maintain them.....cant wait for the upcoming videos.
Ive recently moed into a house with a front loading washer and dryer and the settings are so different from my previous washer. Theres no way to wash on only hot water. Im wondering if anyone with a similar washing machiene can do a video on how they wash their diapers. :) Thanks.
@mamaatheart We do have 2 or 3 videos with front loaders, check those out and see if its similar.
My settings have like cold/cold which i use for a rinse, then my hot wash is hot/warm i believe I use that for my Wash with detergent cycle and use 2nd rinse option as well.
@MBShrewsbury Thanks. :) Ill look for those videos! :) My washer has hot/cold warm/warm warm/cold and cold/cold setttings though, no hot/warm :( I use the extra rinse option also. Ill have to make a video showing it and all the buttons! lol
You really only should strip your diapers when you run into a problem with your diapers b/c stripping can be pretty harsh on your diapers. I've been lucky and have only had to strip twice in 14 months, once from detergent build up and once b/c of a yeast problem we ran into.
@carlynicoleelliotte Depending on what method you use to strip will depend on how harsh it is on your diapers. Some are not harsh at all just a good deep cleaning. Stripping every couple of months as a preventative measure to keep problems away is fine : )
@08jaydensmommy08 True, if you strip with a CD detergent it's not as bad. Using Dawn can be very harsh though which is what most people think about and use when it comes to stripping.

How is the best way to strip diapers in a top loader HE machine? I am afraid to strip them because I don't want to hurt the machine.
