Although the movie Elizabeth was very inaccurate, I believe that Cate Blanchett was a much better actress suited for the role. For some reason, to me, this Elizabeth isn't believable. There's something non-regal about her. Anyways, that's just my opinion.
@Nicollie1062 I agree in part. I found AM Duff's performance unimpressive during the first two episodes. She does get much better afterwards though. Her portrayal of Elizabeth in old age was great. Blanchett's perforance was good, she reprised a lot of Glenda Jackson's superb acting in Elizabeth R. It's a pity that Blanchett's work was seriously hindered by a very bad script.
@LaMarquiseDeMerteuil I TOTALLY agree with what you say about the BAD script of "Elizabeth" with Cate Blanchett, not to mention that horrid "The Golden Age".
It all comes down to one thing: you can trust NO ONE but yourself!!!
And ultimately nobody trusts anybody fully and completely.
Even sentimentals agree that humans are selfish beings, and survival of ourselves or that which is important to us remains for goal when the high stakes are set.
Oh my goodness this is almost like when Elizabeth was writing to her sister Mary Tudor, begging for her forgiveness. Now Mary Queen of Scots is writing to her cousing Elizabeth Tudor. Ruling a country, so hard, wouldn't want that job.
Agreed! The best adaption from all my historical reading is the BBC production with Glenda Jackson: Elizabeth R. (1970s) Alison Weir (acclaimed Tudor historian)said she found it the most accurate. I think it was directed by Mead (the same director who did I, Claudius). It's irritating when you know that this didn't happen like that or at all. I guess it's "dramatic 'license'"; although some film doesn't deserve a license;)
@unclealand - Yet this is one of the best versions of Elizabeth's reign I've seen yet as far as historical accuracy goes; especially when compared to the ones with Cate Blanchett in them. Naturally they're going to put in unnecessary drama that hinders historical accuracy; BBC productions are still subject to stereotypical bull to keep viewers.
Also keep in mind that it's really next to impossible to retell a 44 year reign into 4 parts for 1 hour; yet here they've done a fantastic job.
As I said, it has been dumbed down for people who can only sit still for an hour at a time. The acting is mediocre and embarrassing. But, for those who like that sort of thing . . .
Funny how they played it this way, when in virtually every other production, they neglect to give Anne Boleyn the French accent she probably had, having spent all those years at the French court.
I don't know-but Anne's first language was likely English and she did not go to the French Court as a baby. Why would she have an accent? I have a cousin (through marriage) who came to the U.S. at 12-and she has no trace of an accent. She sounds American born and bred.
Also I know of no English courtiers from her day who commented on any accent-I think Anne was considered to have elegant, French ways but was very English otherwise. jmo
Fair enough, but, Anne went to France as early as 6 (no later than 13) and is believed by historians like Antonia Fraser to have spoken with a French accent, which is what endeared her to some and alienated others. When Genevieve Bujold played her, she made no attempt at an English accent, while Welshman Richard Burton adapted his own to a royal lilt.
I was enjoying Virgin Queen until abruptly, I couldn't find ANYTHING following Ep 3 Part 4! I would really LOVE to see the rest of the series and find myself in limbo. Can anyone direct me on to rest series?
It seems that this is the last on the Ep 3 part 4 that is available (unless I've missed it somehow). Does anyone know where I can find the remaining to end Ep.3. And I see there is a Ep. 4.. YIKES! I've begun watching this an am stuck here with only this episode. HELP!!
Mary of Guise was her and also her primary parent. Thus it makes perfect sense that her accent would French especially with so much of her time being spent in France.
For the continuation go to: Elizabeth I The Virgin Queen (part13/21) and then go on to part 14/21

The boy lighting the fire near the end- is that a signal fire for the Catholics of England, that Elizabeth had finally "murdered" Mary?
