its so sad - i´m so sad, that you Johnny, left us..............But we will remember..But for how long?? Soon we will join you, i´m rather old now, and then - whats left...To Sad..(vacation)..?
@Etrangere60 I feel you bro. God SO many great ones. Philip, Paris Lynott, Brian Connelly, But Johnny has that extra hurt because he was so tragic already. Turn off the lights and put on the "So Alone" album. His spirit will come to you..You must remember though, He's so untouchable. Bon Voyage to you, Johnny..
I was into "The Dan" so exclusively in '70's that sadly I missed some major players, such as The N,Y, Dolls, who collectively, and individually, radically altered the course of Rock and Roll forever... as I am just now learning 30+ years later. I never even considered them anything but a side-show band in those days and wouldn't give them a listen. Live and learn. Punk was ushered in by them more than ANY of the "others" who seem too anxious take credit for it 's creation.
The thing about Thunders is he's not a "great" singer or guitar player in the traditional school of thought but his songs and his vibe as a performer are undeniablely off the chart....in other words a true artist.
Johnny is a GREAT guitarist,he was stripped down sleezy rock n roll to the bone,he inspired thousands including myself. He is also a great singer, his voice is amazing its so unique, thats like bob dylan to some his voice is horrible but thats who he is and its a wonderful sound
Johhny looks terrible *sad*. The leukemia was eating him up at the point. Sometimes I wonder if he OD'd on purpose in New Orleans to escape the pain of his illness.
JT's talent as a guitarist, singer, composer, and performer is beyond words. He was the engine behind the Dolls, but so much more as a solo artist. The world lost a rock legend in Johnny, as well as so many others. He is so overlooked when it comes to discussing the evolution of music from the early 70s to today.
Thanks for replying. -I've now read in a few different places that Johnny Thunders had advanced leukemia at his time of death...so either way he was going down (be it by drugs or natural causes) so many of these guys (from the NY punk movement of the '70's and 80's) are dead from naural causes...odd
No offense but I hate when people say that. Damn do you think it would ave been better if he peaked out and then died with the Heartbreakers. He made beautiful music his whole life isn't that enough? Most people do peak long before they die!
It was advanced leukemia, I'm still not sure though. That's what Johnny's sister Mary said. My dad was good friends with Johnny and we still keep in touch with his family so that's how I know that.
Thanks for replying...I find it really odd so many guys from the NY punk scene of the seventies and eighties had really terrible diseases like Joey Ramone,,,Arthur Kane also had leukemia as did Johnny T....Jerry Nolan died of a stroke after meningitis...Stiv died in his sleep of a concussion (after a car accident) etc. etc. makes you wonder??
idk about this year with the saxaphone but there is a live album with the sax in it its called "JOHNNY THUNDERS YOU CANT PUT YOUR ARMS AROUND A MEMORY"

yep, almost the end. he looks good here actually, worse later. too bad he had to shoot his heroin. if he only had smoked it, he may still be here physically. ...and jimi, janis, moon, bonham, bon scott, phil lynott--- what could have been???....sad.
He doesn't look good at all here, and this was 3 weeks before he died. And it will always remain a mystery how he really died. But he was very ill at this point, he had leukemia and you can tell by the way he looks that he was sick. And this time it was not because of drugs, because he wasn't on drugs here.

As my mother used to say (loudly and in public): that woman has legs that go right up to her bum. I think we need more air guitar like that on stage.

@teiscoxx I wouldn't say he was a great singer but his style of guitar was pure rock and roll which makes his great in my opinion.
