  • does anyone know where i can watch this entire interview?

  • In my opinion...the best writer/director of his age and generation.

  • magnolia is probably pta's weakest piece, but I still loved it. So far he's never disappointed.

  • He's a fan of Stanley Kubrick? I wouldn't have guessed that from EVERY FUCKING MOVIE HE'S MADE...

  • @tabber87 Are you implying that his pictures are rip offs of Kubricks? I think that's pretty ridiculous, his movies really aren't similar to Kubricks at all. If anything magnolia resembles Robert Altmans "short cuts" just a 100 times better version.

  • @ButchClancyDubstep That really only supports my position that he is an utterly banal director who plagiarizes the works of truly great filmmakers.

However, if you couldn't detect a more than subtle Kubrickesque style in There Will Be Blood then I'm afraid this conversation is pointless.

  • @tabber87 In what way are PTA's pictures banal? I can see the general population saying that his films are banal because the general pop are used to big blockbusters and action films with explosions every 5 mins but I wouldn't expect someone who likes good movies to say that. I can see some similarities in blood as far as the use of music and the cinematography but not in the details or story of the picture. It's not like a Tarantino movie where everything is a rip off from other films.

  • It'll be interesting to see what kind of movie The Master will be. If it's a movie about religious cults, you just know that PTA will be asked repeatedly about Tom Cruise and Scientology during its promotion. All I can think is that it's going to be a non-judgmental view of cults.

  • "pretentious" is what people who don't understand film call him. And what they'll probably call me after reading this comment.

  • PTA is underrated!!!

  • It seems that the black gentleman is making PTA nervous.

  • @MrKurtLongjohn Or the audience.

  • @KajiCarson You're right; I saw him give a Q&A a few years ago and he was extremely shy. He said something like, "I can't believe I'm fucking here," or "get me out of here." (I forget the exact words.)

  • wow! Kubrick and Anderson.

  • THE BEST FILMMAKER ALIVE!!!

  • @albertmay totally. he's my favorite director currently and I read this poll a little while ago that listed PTA as the 3rd best filmmaker alive today (behind Scorsese at 1, and Coppola at 2).

  • PTA is so cool, in the most unaffected unpretentious way. I really like his take on filmmaking. I don't get some of the comments here at all man. Paul is probably more articulate hopped up than I am when I'm sober.

  • pretentious? are you kidding? in this interview, p.t. seems completely down-to-earth!

if you notice, when the interviewer, elvis mitchell (who was at that time film critic for the ny times), asks pt how he handled cruise's stardom within the context of his film, p.t. explains quite literally what he did. no pretentiousness there!

mitchell, at the very end of the interview, tries to elevate p.t.'s explanation to pretentiousness, but pt clearly resists the impulse.

  • how is he pretentious?

  • "Stanley Kubrick... The king". I agree with him.

  • p.t. anderson's one of the greatest directors around...his movies are so underated, but movies like transformers and shitty cartoon movies like the simpsons get all the attention...think about it...

  • dude, I like PTA's movies but I cant let tha jab about the simpsons movie pass. I agree transformers and the other movies made just to sell toys are shit but the simpsons are art. Matt Groening hasnt shortchanged story for the sake of selling a few action figures.

  • thats tru man, but the Simpsons movie was just made so the creators to it can get more money...its like a really long episodes with barts wang in it...Groening sold out just like everybody in hollywood has

  • Paul's' films aren't underrated at all.

  • just nervous i think

  • One of the greatest directors of our generation.

  • Normally he's more articulate, I think he was on something during this interview.

  • Interesting. I find that the more fucked up I am, the more articulate I become.

  • No, you probably think you're more articulate

  • You're pretty stupid aren't you? 'I think, therefore I am' used to work on 17th century, not now. You should read something more than the quotes book that you're mom gave you. Do us all a favour and shut up. It's PTA speaking here.

  • It must hurt when you take a shit.

  • this roboticonion character is certainly into motivational tapes. He deludes himself thinking people really care about his opinions.....

  • HUH? Hear any slurring?Sentences are not to the point?time with dead air? Seems to me the guy might be TIRED? Have you any idea the schedule he keeps? Are you an expert on drugs affecting presentation of character? A top-flight pharmacist consulting on the affect of DRUGS: & BEHAVIOR OF producers working 18hr/7 days a week? PTA does not do drugs! Folks thinking different behavior=drugs-DO DRUGS.That response lives next door to thoughts in N-Z files(level to the A-hole!)

  • It's no secret that PTA dabbled in cocaine during this period. Calm down.

  • PTA just came up with probably one of the best movies ever made "There Will Be Blood". You should consider thinking a bit before speaking nonesense not that it really matters much......just a suggestion!

  • Rather than make a general put-down statement about someone who obviously is doing something right? Give us an example of this "hot diarrhea", ...in a moment...right now I feel a FART coming.

  • Magnolia is one of the greatest films of all time, PTA must feel like a king.

  • agreed.

  • he must walk about all the time going "Don't you look at me, i made Magnolia"

  • Imagine how many lives he intertwined and presented in a 2hour slot and completely conveyed enough for the audience to get the issues of all characters? Any other guy would say this is about 7 movies in one? Fabulous and thank goodness we are spared so much trivial dialogue?(babble found in most conversations-in bowling alleys and museums).
