  • nice work dude

  • Happy Canada Day 2011 to all of our friends north of the border!

  • Great version! But need one with better sound quality lol

  • Bam Bam. Baddest version!!

  • Canadian cameramen are pretty fast...

  • great anthem, but why in god's name would canada or the US want to merge with mexico. about as likely as the EU inviting the entire middle east in. your paranoia is silly, no one is threating canada's soreignty except Québécois nationalists (to québécois in general, don't take this offensively, I love your culture).

  • Every morning before class we would watch this...Ah Memories of high school...

  • This is how its to be played.. as an Anthem

not screaming singers or wailing guitars

  • This animation was done by the Academy Award nominated Michael Mills Productions in Montreal, one of the best animation studios in the nation.

  • This was played at the 1976 Olympic games in Montreal.

  • The violins at 1:03 give me shivers every time.Such a beautifull arrangement.Very powerfull.

  • @t5239857289578947594

me too!! and it just did this time again - I'm serious. It's been favorite part forever, and I've always been stunned at how amazing it is. Merci Calixa Lavallée

  • Is Calixa Lavallee the composer?Been looking to get a clear digital copy somewhere.Glad to hear you also like it soo much.

  • Yes Lavallee composed the song, Routhier wrote the first lyrics (in French), then Weir wrote the English version decades later.

There's an interesting story to this song, you can check it out on wikipedia. It was composed as the anthem for the French Canadian nation. In late 1800s, Canada was still the name of the nation of the descendants of French settlers. Anglophones here still called themselves British, and God Save the Queen was still their official national anthem.

  • As a "southern neighbour", I get shivers at the string swell at 0:47 and throughout the following "God keep our land" verse.

As much as I love your anthem, however, I would prefer to hear the "Star Spangled Banner" play after the men's Olympic hockey game on February 28, 2010. ;-)

The fans in Vancouver were chanting "We want USA...we want USA" - well, we were chanting "We want Canada...we want Canada!"

It's a great thing that we are such good friends! "May these gates never close."

  • May these gates never close, my friend.

  • @OldsVistaCruiser - On the other hand, a friend of mine who has lived in Ottawa his entire life, is rooting for the Bruins in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final. Although I'm a lifelong resident of the U.S., I'm rooting for the Canucks! (As a Flyers fan, there is a small animosity vs. the Bruins)

  • We have the most beautiful country on earth. One nation who cares if you re english or french, you have morons on both sides.

  • I always liked this animation, but I think the Maritimes got shortchanged. From the time it leaves Percé, you see a trawler, some woods, and it's back out to sea again. You'd think they's at least show a confused Newfie :-)

  • At one time it was played before you watch a movie.

  • Im looking for the montage they had in the 80's come on people this MUST be on youtube. Anyway to be honest this anthem thing on the cbc just depresses me. It really does. The end of programming/beginning of programming thing with the anthem they've always done. It depressed me as a kid and still does now. I can't explain it.

  • Please canada kick the block québecois and Gilles Duceppe out of ottawa

  • @primojet

United we stand, together we fall

  • Having travelled Canada by train, I can say that I am a proud Canadian patriot and consider myself blessed amongst the lucky few of this planet to have been born in such a beautiful, prosperous, peaceful, and historic land.

    Vive le Canada libre!!!!!!!!

  • quebec freee! we in quebec don't want to be a part of that canada! one day we will be free!

  • Comment removed

  • yes i am sorry but the french settled here too, so u are apart of canada and always will be... french ppl are apart of canadian history... but alas the days of canada in general are coming to an end so u will never be free, u will be apart of canada usa and mexico, along with the rest of the continent, and one day we will be the same nationatity as australi,a nd france, and russia etc etc screw the North american union and the new world order... 2010 can go die!!! (NAU comes out)

  • are you saying canada isn't a country

  • no. im saying that canada will be a state soon enough, a state in the 140-something states in the united nations. of the world.

im saying that i dont want that to happen, and that i want us to have our independence, and to keep it.

basically i am saying canada is a country now, but it wont be for long...the same goes for all the other countries in the world

  • You don't speak for everyone apexee. You Quebecers with that braindead Jacques Pariseau wanted to split but the Canadians worldwide agreed that Quebec should not seperate. I find Quebec women honest and caring than the average woman in Canada.

Quebec is part of Canada: end of story!!!

  • If you want to be free and French, why not try St. Pierre et Miquelon?

It's right off the Canadian coast, and it's a French overseas department.

  • I love my country...

  • I'm usually not one for patriotism, but we do really live in a magical place underneath it all. :)

  • grettings from ur neighbor down south

  • What I love about this that it's showing all of canada from the cities, wilderness and the oceans. I'm not canadian and I enjoy this masterpiece................GO ALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Absolutely LOVE the Logdriver's Waltz. NFB and this animated anthem are bits of Canadiana I love.

  • I also remember that before they would air this they would have on the logdrivers walz, If your Canadian you will remember that, I am almost in tears seeing all this old global late night programming again, I also loved Night walk and night ride, Thank you for bringing me back to my childhood for a few minutes.

  • Wow I remember as a kid seeing this all the time and then as soon as it would be over the screen would just go to the coloured bar screen with the annoying noise. Great video brings back memories.

  • Same thing for me... :) I have always loved this video!

  • I'm a moderate separatist and I actually shed tears watching this...

  • O Canada!

    Our home and native land!

True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,

The True North strong and free!

From far and wide, O Canada,

We stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

  • best part at 1:02

  • omg i teared up a little lol......really

  • Ahh, wonderful. I remember this old watercolor animation from way back. Thanks alot for uploading this. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

  • My absolute favourite rendition of "O Canada". I also love the animation and remember it fondly from my youth...

(Gotta go watch Trailer Park Boys!!!)

  • Same with me. It's also as old as me too believe it or not.

  • seriously the best ever version of O Canada.. if we could hear it more often arranged this way.. especially the last part with the climax, if somebody could sing on it that would be very intense!! i do get the goosebumps too, every time I see it! I could not believe when I saw that it is still played at Radio-Canada Montreal (saw it last week after the Olympics)

  • Now THAT'S how you do a fucking anthem!

  • it's a big country though. People from England and Germany could do a drive across their country and back on a weekend. Here you would need at least a few weeks to cover the distance from east to west and back and that's not including the northern reaches.

  • I thought your Trans-Canada Highway was similar to the U.S. Interstate highway system! Am I wrong? I've heard tales of the 401 in Ontario.

Even at your 100-klick speed limit (62 mph), wouldn't it still only take 4-7 days to cross Canada?

Interstate highway speed limits are as high as 80 mph or 130 km/h (in western Texas), but are usually anywhere from 65/105 (East Coast) to 75/120 (Midwest & Rockies).

It takes about 3-4 days to cross the U.S. on I-80.

  • It's 110 in most western provinces and 100 in most eastern areas

I-80 will be faster because for one, in Canada the road is not a straight line because of the great lakes and some areas don't have a lot of people like in northern ontario, so the road turns south or north.

I haven't gone through the rockies on I-80 but I have done I-90 and the Canadian mountain passes around the BC-Alberta line make the road much more bendy and windy than I-90

  • The 401 is not like most highways in Canada. It has six lanes and carries very heavy truck traffic. The trans-Canada highway in northern Ontario and in the western provinces, is mostly two lanes so it's not really like the interstate system in the United States. We just don't have a big enough population here for it.

  • HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!

  • This is the best country on earth!!

  • Since Canada Day is over a week away, what great thing to say.

  • I'd like to wish my neighbo(u)rs to the north a happy Canada Day on July 1 - as we celebrate our independence "down south" just three days later!

Have a safe and happy holiday from your friends and neighbo(u)rs in the USA!

  • Thanks. Happy Independance day.

    Love your Canadian neighbours.

  • I love our country but our political leaders and government sucks!!!!

  • Tantra:

Arguably, one of the best presidents (if not the very best president) in U.S. history was disabled.

Unfortunately, Franklin Delano Roosevelt chose to hide his handicap instead of sending a message to the disabled that they could rise all the way to the top!

    MrTantraMan wrote:

If only Canadian government had more disabled people in the Parliament THEN the world would ook at Canada as the innovator as well as a new world order in politics.

  • I would love to see bright people with Aspergers Syndrome just make a huge impact in politics. Not many people with conditions like mine can make it into politics.

  • Ain't any different "down south"! ;-)

Politicians and diapers must be changed often, both for the same reason.

There's a U.S. Senator from New Jersey who's running for a new term that he won't finish until he's 91.

He's long-forgotten as the author of the nationwide 55 mph (88 klicks) speed limit in 1974.

  • *Salute* to the best country in the world.

Our home and native land...Oh Canada, you're beautiful.

  • I'm so grateful every day that I live here and not some other part of the world.

  • I really enjoy seeing this on YouTube, and, if I may, my eyes have watered from seeing this, so, even though I'm not originally from Canada, I feel very good when I hear this anthem.

    Thank you.

  • i honestly cry everytime I hear O'Canada

  • I just wished more people would show appreciation for this anthem like you. Thanks for sharing.

  • Oh crap i think I just shed a tear. Man I love Canada even when I'm not there most of the time. I just love singing O canada to piss off my buddies in Europe cause so few there are patriotic except during football matches.

  • To which I'll add my favourite moment: When the strings swell and the birds fly past the sun. This really is the climax of this piece and is significant on so many levels. Geographically, that moment would be at Ottawa. The English words there are "God keep our land." Just beautiful!

  • I remember this on the Windsor CBC station when I lived in Detroit in the late '90s. It's a beautiful piece of animation for a beautiful anthem for a beautiful country.

  • For Anglophones "down south" who don't speak "hockey French", please translate!

I did catch the part about "eat $#!+". ;-)

While you're here, please post the French words to O Canada - I already posted the English version.

    Cheers from the US,

    Bill

  • Merci beaucoup/much thanks!
