its supposed to be disturbing.. that is what the directors want. the mood, the writing and the actions all point to this dark tale of two women, one who thinks she's lonely and another who is alone. judi dench is supposed to be scary, thats her character's purpose. there is a reason she is as scary as that and it's because it would break the plot if she wasnt. dont be stupid, appreciate the film because it is a masterpiece or don't go on youtube and watch videos about it.

Actually, it's kind of irrelevant, because her obsession goes so far beyond sexual attraction. If you watch the movie, you realize that Barbara is getting real pleasure from controlling Sheba, in a way only a psychopath really could. To say that romantic attachment is the only force at work here is really simplifying it. Just because you're gay doesn't mean you're crazy--Barbara and her motives cannot be explained simply with, "She's a lesbian," and they should not.

@ete4 I totally agree, but I think Barbara is even more complex than that. I just watched this movie again recently, and I remember when it just came out everyone was calling it the "Judi Dench is a lesbian movie"...but Barbara is such a heartbreaking character--she lives in total isolation with no sense of moral support. I think her basic need for controlling Sheba and manipulating her is to gain a stable partner. By the end of the film she even tells Sheba directly: "I need more than a friend"

There are just so few actresses that will ever be as authentic or brilliant as these two. Such incredibly intense artistry (regardless of the camp of the story). Performance will never get better than this. Authentic characters, re-creating a life...however flawed, and being un-afraid to show an unatractive side of a person is just INCREDIBLY difficult...performance and acting doesn't get any better than these two women. They are just pure genius!
