Ten million soldiers to the war have gone Who may never return again Ten million mothers' hearts may break For the ones who died in vain Head bowed down in sorrow through the lonely years I heard a mother murmur through her tears: I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier, I brought him up to be my pride and joy Who dares to place a musket on his shoulder, To shoot some other mother's darling boy? Let nations arbitrate their future troubles It's time to lay the the swords and guns away
Use Google and search for "Indiana University Sheet Music". You can search for and find the sheet music for both of these songs there (and of course, the lyrics are printed on the sheet music).
In Google, type the names of the songs with quotes around them followed by "sheet music". You'll find sheet music libraries with downloadable copies of these songs, which will have the lyrics printed on them.
I was surprised to learn this song was written in 1915. I thought all the antiwar songs were during the Vietnam war. Chickenhawks like Bill O'reilly, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh must foam at the mouth when they hear "I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier".
@clearcoat2000 Yeah. That was my Great-Great Grandfather. I didn’t Raise My Boy to be a Soldier, that is. Glad you like it. Really glad it is on Youtube. Thanks for the compliments!
A timely a posting of "I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier". It's as poweful and relevant today as it was during WWI. Decades ago, I heard Marilyn Horne sing it during a recital with orchestra in NYC's Lincoln Center. It gripped and moved the audience in ways that I've rarely observed in the theatre.
I'd have loved to see that entire show.

There'd be no war today, if mothers all would say
"I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier."
What victory can calm a mother's heart
When she thinks of her blighted home?
What victory can bring her back
All she cared to call her own?
Let each mother answer in the years to be
"Remember that my boy belongs to me!"
