Everything about this song is fucking visceral. The droning, dissonant guitars, the sludgy riffing in the chorus, Layne's haunted vocals, a great rhythm section. This entire album represents such misery at such exhaustion the same way Dirt represents that same misery at it's most aggressive boiling point. You could almost trace Layne's spiritual decline through Alice in Chains and Mad Season (highly recommend checking them out).
does anybody know if Layne used vocal effects on this track? I know he used it on Head creeps and Frogs but are those the only one? would really like to know... thanks
@liveafterdeath100thats cuz hes on another level.. glad he hasnt raped himself out and played with a bunch of bums out there.. though i would want to see a phil anselmo collab album... that would be insanity
@missjunkheadx Yes, Layne has mentioned that in several interviews, and by his mother! every AIC fan should know that he didn't want people to start using drugs or getting high and shit like that! He was happy for those who had managed to kick their drug habit, and he was pissed when people came up to him and said that they were high and showing him thumbs up.
Just so you know, I didn't start getting high because of Layne.

every day is a victory when i don't once think about getting high. granted, i never toyed with heroin, but it's still an addiction. and to anyone who thinks an addiction is a choice, you need to get off your high horse and realize there are people out there who fucked up and can turn their lives around.
I have always felt this was their best song from this album and the best song that layne wrote by himself. i know most AIC fans don't recognize this song as great, butto me it does. and regarding some idiot posted on here about addictions, everyone has some kind of addiction. some are good, some are bad. yes some minds are stronger at beating an addiction than other's and unfortunately, layne's mind wasn't so strong to beat his. trust me, i am an addict.

WRONG! It's not a disease!
Damn it Layne! You have Lupus!
Damn it Layne! You're an addict!
Notice how one of those doesn't sound right?
Doing heroin is a choice. Becoming addicted is ALSO a choice. Once you are addicted the choice to quit heroin is a little harder to make, but by all means does not mean you're diseased.
Yeah, Layne tells kids not to do heroin by injecting it into his arm every chance I get. In no way shape or form is it a confusing method of relying a message.
@yolates fight an H-head with an H-head. I almost saw him in Cleveland too. I wish I would have. He was opening for Dave Attell and Lewis Black. By the time pay day came around they were sold out.
@ComaAlpha Well, if you payed attention and researched what you're preaching against, you'll know he didn't do it because he wanted to towards the end, he just couldn't take the pain. If you listen to songs like Angry Chair or God Smack he talks about them in a very negative manner. Yes, he failed to overcome his addiction, but he preached against it, and for that, you must give credit where credit is due.
@Aviancie his girlfriend died. WAAH! What did she die from again? OH YEAH! Heroin overdose. Look, I'm not going to take anything away from the man's talent. He had an incredible voice and he knew how to use it very damn well. BUT that has to do with his talents, but not his personality. Layne Staley on CD and Layne Staley in person were two different people as far as I'm concerned. I love AiC, I loved Layne, but I'm not going to condone H.

AMEN! I get negative 4 for speaking the truth? Anyways, I'm going to get an AIC/MM/NIN tattoo. And not just portraits of Layne Staley, Brian Warner and Trent Reznor. 2 reasons,
#1 the image idea is MINE and MINE ALONE
#2 the music is what it's all about anyways. Not the people behind them. Brian Warner is a dork. Trent Reznor is a whiny bitch and Layne was a heroin addict. Neither of which I look up to. But all three have released music that moved my soul.
sir you are ill mistaken. you must not know what its like to be addicted to opiates. and people worship layne not because he does heroin and all that. people worship him because his struggle to send the message to his fans that heroin is a bad drug and to stay away from it. thats what layne was all about.
this song is amazing, truly full of raw emotion. this band was so gifted, and really have influenced me into becoming the person i have become today. layne staley was one of the best vocalists in the history of music. FUCK GLAM!!! FUCKING FLYING TANGERINE DILDOS
Its from the inlet of the Dirt album. And yeah I agree, that'd be kick ass.
I just found this song through Pandora b/c I can't find the albums after Jar of Flies around here locally... and damn this is one beautifully nasty song. \m/ looking forward to the new CD by the way.
Crazy as it sounds the first ten seconds remind me of Dethklok's "Fansong". You don't believe me? Compare them sometime. *grin* Hail AIC and Dethklok.
there is no way that AIC and the band you call Dethklok (Fansong) is anywhere close to the same. I question anyone's musical judgement that listens to Dethklok.
why do you question anyone's musical judgement who listens to Dethklok? It's a death metal "band" from a popular cartoon. obviously it's not serious like AIC. some people just want to have some fun with music.
I don't have any issues with people having fun with music. My issue is comparing a band like AIC to Dethklok, such as you did. You'd be better off comparing Spinal Tap to Dethklok in my view. I went searching out Dethklok thinking they were the next best thing to AIC based on your comment. boy was that a surprise!
you mean how brnleague99 compared them, correct? Based on your negative feedback I've gathered from your assessment on Dethklok, would I be correct in assuming you don't have a taste for death metal, or would it be because you feel AIC is superior to a fictional cartoon band?
i listen to dethklok!!! but not for its musical value, they just have funny lyrics....i would never compare them to AIC... we all know which is far superior
i personally am not a fan of pearl jam i like A.I.C mark lannegen srry if i spelled it wrong nirvana before that mad season mudhoney no pearl jam and a little soundgarden thats about it im stuck in the 90s
lol you hate a band because there label? and by the way there considered grunge because of "ten" there other stuff isnt. PJ is a very good band, mike mcready is sick just like he is in mad season and vedder is one of the greatest live performers of all time. they are my second fav next to AIC
It seems like every person wants to believe that their generation was the best. They want to believe that they had the best schooling, the best state of economy, the best music, and so on. It's just natural because a person doesn't want to believe that they lived half their lives with mediocre standards. Despite this, however, I think there is no denying that this music truly is better than the shit that comes out today. Why? Because it's deep, dark, and stares at the world right in the eyes.
I'm 14 and love Alice in chains. I've gotten my friends into this band. Were musicians with many talents. We hope to bring back great music and destroy all that shit out there right now. layne was a legend and the greatest vocalist ever. R.i.p peace layne. And hopefully your music will help eliminate the shit out there right now.
This song is so eerie and amazing... I love Alice in Chains. I'm a fourteen-year-old girl, so all of my friends listen to Rihanna and the Jonas Brothers, and they think I'm crazy.
oh yeah, aic is my fav band and im 16 and i have a 2 year old sister and im already drillin them and pj into her so she doesnt grow up listening to shit music,
All my friends are guys yet they listen to all the lame music (except they like old LP and trapt) the rest is Dragonforce, openly emo music, disney stuff, J-pop, so its kinda difficult to be in a band with them. (its called A-Psalm-Sheet)
Rap sucks anyway tekmek, so why are you even calling rap music when all rappers do is talk in 4/4 time and rhyme while hitting buttons on a board to make a beat that sounds good to them. Yeah thats real hard to do i'm sure, alot of talent required. MOST music is shit now, we are trying to keep it alvie but society is all about hip hop and emo shit now. I miss AIC and all the other bands that are just memories now.
I wish i was around at this time,,,metal or anything dont mean shit anymore...it would of felt good to belong to something ( a movement if you will ),,this era is shit
Yeah, it was pretty cool to be in my late teens and hear "man in the box" for the first time. This record came out in '95, but I was still was only 22 at the time. Great time to be that age as opposed to nowadays. Wish Layne was still w/ us...
that whole CD is awesome.Like I've said it's so hard to pick a favorite CD from Alice in Chains.I will say that this one could be the overall best for hard grinding rock with outstanding lyric's.From 2:20 o 2:44 you hear the Hendrix influenced sound from Cantrell where he recorded it forward but played it backward when laying down track.Hendrix done it on the song "Are you experienced ?".All I
Whats funny is that back in the 90's when i was a teen, the older guys would be like "oh man motley crue, ratt!" and we all knew they sucked, not cuz they were older but because they really sucked. Kids these days know whats up-AIC, Nirvana, Soundgarden, STP, Pearl Jam, all that shit pre-97 is fantastic. Be thankful for bands like Staind, Crossfade, Seether, 3 Days Grace cuz you can hear the influences of these great bands.
It's a lot better than what is being force fed down these kids' mouth and labeled as "rock music". If bands like Staind weren't around, you'd have all these fags in their sister's black jeans and eyeliner ruining the music world even worse.
You can say rap is sold out, but it's not. Rap YOU hear on the radio is sold out, but there are always artists who make it for the music. Keep in mind AIC and the Seattle Scene were riding a wave of post-glam angst and cynicism in rock. So don't give me shit about how music is BS now.
I seriously yelled when I saw this title OMG COULD IT BE?! Yes it could be, and it's fucking amazing.

this song is amazing, truly full of raw emotion. this band was so gifted, and really have influenced me into becoming the person i have become today. layne staley was one of the best vocalists in the history of music. FUCK GLAM!!! FUCKING FLYING TANGERINE DILDOS
ripkurdt 2 years ago 8
but AIC had glam influences. that's what made them so unique combine galm with brutality. you can see that on facelift.

*grin* Hail AIC and Dethklok.
brnleague99 3 years ago
Hahaha! I see what you mean! Crazy shit.
Smee17 2 years ago
yeah
Steve19891 2 years ago 3
there is no way that AIC and the band you call Dethklok (Fansong) is anywhere close to the same. I question anyone's musical judgement that listens to Dethklok.
GrizzlTooth 2 years ago 3
Re: GrizzlTooth's comment.
why do you question anyone's musical judgement who listens to Dethklok? It's a death metal "band" from a popular cartoon. obviously it's not serious like AIC. some people just want to have some fun with music.
thewait666 2 years ago
I don't have any issues with people having fun with music. My issue is comparing a band like AIC to Dethklok, such as you did. You'd be better off comparing Spinal Tap to Dethklok in my view. I went searching out Dethklok thinking they were the next best thing to AIC based on your comment. boy was that a surprise!
GrizzlTooth 2 years ago
you mean how brnleague99 compared them, correct? Based on your negative feedback I've gathered from your assessment on Dethklok, would I be correct in assuming you don't have a taste for death metal, or would it be because you feel AIC is superior to a fictional cartoon band?
thewait666 2 years ago
i listen to dethklok!!! but not for its musical value, they just have funny lyrics....i would never compare them to AIC... we all know which is far superior

i hate them too...i'd hate them less if they werent considered grunge..but they are and they aren't grunge at all thats why i hate them
snookyeoj 3 years ago
lol you hate a band because there label? and by the way there considered grunge because of "ten" there other stuff isnt. PJ is a very good band, mike mcready is sick just like he is in mad season and vedder is one of the greatest live performers of all time. they are my second fav next to AIC

Nah, man, you're not the only one. They only have like 3 or 4 good songs. In contrast, I cannot think of a bad AIC song.

GlennBeckEnvoy 3 years ago 3
if i ever learn drums, this is the first song i would learn. it has such a playful beat, despite the lyrical nature of the song

alice in chains had their own sound just like pearl jam both bands were very good. alot of band have tried but it cant be done, enjoy
40calkiller 3 years ago
I'm 14 and love Alice in chains. I've gotten my friends into this band. Were musicians with many talents. We hope to bring back great music and destroy all that shit out there right now. layne was a legend and the greatest vocalist ever. R.i.p peace layne. And hopefully your music will help eliminate the shit out there right now.
coolboy1178 3 years ago 6
This song is so eerie and amazing... I love Alice in Chains. I'm a fourteen-year-old girl, so all of my friends listen to Rihanna and the Jonas Brothers, and they think I'm crazy.

All my friends are guys yet they listen to all the lame music (except they like old LP and trapt) the rest is Dragonforce, openly emo music, disney stuff, J-pop, so its kinda difficult to be in a band with them. (its called A-Psalm-Sheet)
Finally someone I can relate to.

What I find sad is how despite Cantrell's best effort, good lead-guitar playing waned in the 1990s.
GargoyleGreenGiant 3 years ago
Rap sucks anyway tekmek, so why are you even calling rap music when all rappers do is talk in 4/4 time and rhyme while hitting buttons on a board to make a beat that sounds good to them. Yeah thats real hard to do i'm sure, alot of talent required. MOST music is shit now, we are trying to keep it alvie but society is all about hip hop and emo shit now. I miss AIC and all the other bands that are just memories now.

Yeah, it was pretty cool to be in my late teens and hear "man in the box" for the first time. This record came out in '95, but I was still was only 22 at the time. Great time to be that age as opposed to nowadays. Wish Layne was still w/ us...

that whole CD is awesome.Like I've said it's so hard to pick a favorite CD from Alice in Chains.I will say that this one could be the overall best for hard grinding rock with outstanding lyric's.From 2:20 o 2:44 you hear the Hendrix influenced sound from Cantrell where he recorded it forward but played it backward when laying down track.Hendrix done it on the song "Are you experienced ?".All I

you guys who were teens in the early ninties- you were so freaakin lucky!!!
lulabugx 3 years ago 9
Whats funny is that back in the 90's when i was a teen, the older guys would be like "oh man motley crue, ratt!" and we all knew they sucked, not cuz they were older but because they really sucked. Kids these days know whats up-AIC, Nirvana, Soundgarden, STP, Pearl Jam, all that shit pre-97 is fantastic. Be thankful for bands like Staind, Crossfade, Seether, 3 Days Grace cuz you can hear the influences of these great bands.
waxoftriple9 3 years ago 4
Be thankful for bands like Staind and Seether? No thank you. But your aforementioned point is a good one.
aphexaic3213 3 years ago 8
It's a lot better than what is being force fed down these kids' mouth and labeled as "rock music". If bands like Staind weren't around, you'd have all these fags in their sister's black jeans and eyeliner ruining the music world even worse.
waxoftriple9 3 years ago 4
Tell it like it is man, music is no longer about emotion or soul. Its about what can make a quick buck

Exactly.

Yeah, people today just don't know what good music is anymore.
RockWarrior97 3 years ago 5
Music will always have a profit factor in it.
You can say rap is sold out, but it's not. Rap YOU hear on the radio is sold out, but there are always artists who make it for the music. Keep in mind AIC and the Seattle Scene were riding a wave of post-glam angst and cynicism in rock. So don't give me shit about how music is BS now.
tekmek123 3 years ago
wait are you saying that Motley Crue sux?? I was with right up to that point
