  • Very nice coverage on the film crew. You are very talented. Thanks for sharing.

  • This was very help ful and not because of the camera. but they way you speak on stuff

  • The Red is heavy and usually placed on a tripod. The 5D can be used to do B-roll. We did that on a doc that I worked on. The footage is then color correct to match.

  • Love the music!

  • Looks amaturish, maybe a college project.

  • i've heard those cameras are extremely heavy. of course she wasn't comfortable with it

  • Indeed I think the canon dslrs do great for what they are. But I would take a free epic in a heartbeat considering some of them cost $40,000+ and they are awesome cameras. I might have to look into renting one out of curiousity.

  • Hey Dave! As always I enjoy your videos so much :) Sorry for off topic but I was wondering if you could make a turtorial on how to make time lapse videos like a guy called Keith Loutit. He makes them in a funny way so it all looks like models, like its not real people. Do you know the trick how to do that? Here is one of his videos:

    /watch?v=Us6kDalkqgM&feature=plcp&context=C36f8294UDOEgsToPDskIH3s3ZrtEhoNLKNkC0LVGh

  • @XTRMSystems that is done with a tilt shift lens which I have not experimented with yet.

  • @drumat5280 ok, if you ever do please make a tutorial! You are by far the best on youtube when it comes to DSLR reviews and tutorials.. but thats just my opinion :)

  • @XTRMSystems look up tilt shift on vimeo, they have a whole video and article on it

  • @MotusPK ok thank you :)

  • 1:51 thats a tiny slate...

  • I heard Red cameras are a pain in the butt to work with. I hear lots of reliability issues.

  • What in the world is a short feature film?

  • @findamir I am not sure but those are the exact words the crew member told me.

  • My buddies in Australia at platinumHD just bought one of those cameras just to do Real Estate Videos....I dont know if they have starting using it yet but its pretty amazing. I think they cost around $75k but maybe a little less. CHeck out their youtube channel

  • Nice

  • For some reason I've seen may camera folk have really strange angles for shooting. It's mainly to allow others to see the footage, but after 15 minutes doing it this way, you get a serious kink in your neck.

  • your right dave, the 70-200mm 2.8 would be an amazing lens, i wished i could afford it.... but i found this particular lens on the web from sigma, also 70-200mm 2.8, but half the price. I wonder if its as good as the canon lens, because the sigma also is an ex lens (sort of sigma´s version of L-Lenses)

  • Is this it?

look up "'Delirium' Is Headed To The Big Screen: We Cast Lena" on Google and I think it's that movie.

  • Hey Dave!

Thanks for your Videos - they are great and you´re a really nice guy hihi :-)

Maybe you have time to check out my Channel and watch my latest Video "Photo+Adventure || 2011 || Vienna ", done with my T2i :-)

I have also written the music and it would be a honor if you would use one of my tracks in your videos (for free exactly) :-)

Hope you had a nice ice-skating day there and I cannot await your next vid :-)

    Take care

    Thomas

  • I like your new color correction ;) its natural

  • I worked as PA on a commercial shoot that used an epic red and the final product was pretty killer. I'd love to try one out myself though.

  • Very cool! Definitely looks like a heavy rig haha.

  • I just subscribed to your channel yesterday :) really like your videos. nice work

  • Your color correcting/grading is amazing, love the way your shots flow together so nicely and you always seem to pull us into your videos. Great work!

  • @CharlesRiveracom Hey wow, thanks I really appreciate that comment I have been working hard on color grading lately.

  • @drumat5280 I love your colour grading too, could you make a tutorial on what & how you would colour grade some footage? preferably how you grade yourself and how you would grade... say a nature shot. Thanks.

  • How do you not know what the RED Epic is?!!!! As a student of film and videos you have a duty to know. The Red Epic is used in plenty of feature films and cost around $50,000

  • @Mozo901 I know what it is, I just didn't know how to identify it out in the field with a bunch of gear around it.

  • @drumat5280 $50,000??? Hey Dave, run down to Best Buy and pick one of those up to review tomorrow! lol

  • I love ur videos. tks

  • well...most people intend to do more professionally depending on budgets..if the budget is low...you cant help but get it over quickly.

  • I LOVE your videos Dave, you are probably my favorite video maker on YouTube, even better than Epic Mealtime champ! Thanks for the great videos, I have learned a LOT from you.

  • T2i sensor sucks bees! Red's over rated.

  • I hear that arri cameras are the best what do you think?

  • Hi Dave, could you get the 15-85mm for review ?

  • Epic 5K its a beast

  • Yo dave that RED camera gos for about 50k

  • 2:40 so creepy :P

  • It honestly looked like she had no idea what she was doing lol.

  • interesting

  • I would of waited till they were done shooting then be like "Can I haz try red epic on my shoulder" :D

  • Which lens were you using? 28-135?

  • Excellent camera work. I am still amazed at the quality of the T2i.

  • @gassman6795 Thanks, I appreciate it!

  • Wow you are right she did look very uncomfortable holding the camera. I really like the red, it has great footage. I hope you will do a video testing the red soon!

  • Great!

  • They might have ''Crowd Release Notice'' somewhere there. Just visited Colorado University-Boulder Film Studies Department. They have hands on work/practical film making courses, now Boulder is getting to know for Indie film-making..even i have met many screen writers and other film enthusiasts at BDA (boulder digital arts) other day.

  • Great stuff! I love seeing how productions operate behind the scenes. That's hilarious how under-dressed they all are! Definitely not from around there. LOL

  • Thank you so much for this informative video :D really interesting

  • i shall now move to Colorado!

  • love you're videos! <3

  • Seems pretty awesome did you ask the director any questions or even talk to him?

and what camera were you filming on at the time?

  • @Trethero he looked way too busy and stressed out for me to ask him anything. I used my T2i with the 28-135mm.

  • Wonder if its really worth the money?

  • @SYZ It is worth the money if you've got the money and you're an expirienced film maker. But if you're only going to use it on a few films it's cheaper just to rent one.

  • Red Epic does not do well in low light. Philip Bloom had one and said the Epic can go as high as ISO 1250.

Read the Philip Bloom post called

Shooting a documentary with the RED Epic, AF100 and F3

Dave I'm sending you a direct link check your inbox.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom Yep, was about to mention this as well. The red is not a great low light performer.

  • @theryaner YOU SIR..... ARE A COMPLETE RETARD. I SUGGEST YOU CHECK YOURSELF INTO A CRAZY HOUSE IMMEDIATELY. THE RED ONE IS THE BEST LOW LIGHT PERFORMING CAMERA IN EXISTANCE. IT CAN DAMN NEAR PERFORM PERFECT JUST FROM THE LIGHT OF A FIRE FLY.

  • @brandonlamarmusic haha why are you so serious? you sound a little stupid when you get all worked up over nothing, and btw you're severely misinformed. Have you even used a RED? Best low light performing camera in existence? ok... anyone who has will tell you that the 5d or any other similar dslr will out perform it in low light. However, the RED does have a major latitude advantage so recovering any shadow information or "lost detail" will be quite easy to do.

  • @theryaner YOU'RE INTIRE RESPONSE IS REDUNDANT AND INVALID..... I USE A RED EPIC ON A DAILY BASIS. SO THAT'S A BIG FAT #FAIL FOR YOU.

  • @brandonlamarmusic you realize the arri alexa and sony f3 w/ S-log will smoke any red in low light? And if you add S-curve to 7d, 5d, shot in cinestyle even after the awful canon processing you won't be able to tell a diff in low light btwn them and the red MX. And for blownout highlights arri will smoke the MX as will the Kodak 5219, and F35. I know you think the red cams are the best in the world, but you only think this b/c you don't know any better.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom Interesting I will have to watch that one.

  • hi can i ask what picture style you use and settings in your room thing

  • @hawhawdecarabaw neutral. Do a search on my site for "picture styles" you will find a ton of info.

  • Interesting !

  • you kind of made the EPIC sound like an OK-good camera, so i feel like i have to say this- it seems to be the closest thing to the ultimate cinema camera (of course there is no ultimate camera), so please before you kinda rant on it just read some more about it :) its actually really easy to use compared to some other cinema cameras and i guess we both think the same thing about the image quality... :)

  • @bassmanTV I did not rant at all about the camera. What did I saw to make you say that?

  • @drumat5280 just the overall tone or something that gave me that feel, like when you said that the CO seemed to be very uncomfortable while using it.... but its fine :)

  • wow how strange, i just put a video on my channel called delirium! i jumped when i heard that!

  • Personally I love the Epic, 5k RED footage is a dream to work with, so much dynamic range. Amazing low light and so cheap too! (at least compared to other cinema grade cameras). Only issue I have with it is rolling shutter, aside from that it beats every other camera hands down. Although I see the Scarlet outselling the Epic from now on since its basically just a B grade Epic at a fraction of the cost.

  • It definitely looked like they where just capturing b-roll footage, I agree with you on that one. And her neck must have ached in the morning, surely they could have lowered the monitor to a better position :)

  • @RedSpectrumPictures I am sure there is a way to put the monitor in a better spot.

  • when you say your wishing you had a 70-200mm your hinting what you want for christmas? hahah

  • @JustMattFraz yes I wish Santa would bring me one. :)

  • @JustMattFraz I'm trying to decide which version of the Canon 70-200m f2.8 to buy. One is about $1200 and the new "enhanced" version is about $2200. Q - is the newer model worth the extra grand? I'm sure some of you guys have looked at this and have an opinion. I just got a 7D and want to start my lens collection. Any advice welcome.

  • @bluestreak525 honestly man, go with the cheaper one. that what i would do. i mean if the cheaper one was top of the line a year ago its still an amazing lens. the difference between the two are VERY miniscule. theres people who have used the same lens for 30 years, age doesnt matter when it comes to your glass.

  • i love your videos :)

  • thanks Dave, good stuff as always.

  • The Red Epic is fair in low-light conditions, as long as you have some supportive light. The great thing about the Red is their 18 stops of dynamic range and of course, the ability to shoot in 5k resolution.

It's always cool to watch a film be shot no matter the budget behind it.

  • i find this video very unlegit, i understand the intention, but you don't even know if it is an epic camera. also it basicly talks about the action going on, only a few things about the camera.

  • @Gui10pt well I found it an interesting video, daves just doing what youtube is for, v-logging.

  • @Gui10pt Sorry you think it is not legit. Did I make it sound misleading from my title?

  • @drumat5280 "My First Look" sounds to me, exactly like what you did. I don't know what Gui10pt is talking about.

Good one, Dave! Keep it up

  • @Gui10pt it's good to talk about how they were putting the film together, its not the camera that counts, its how you use it which does, he was just showing that he saw a film being made and recorded it, and said a few things about the camera, of course it's legit

  • @jeddr1 ofcourse it is nice, but the tittle says first look at the red epic, and he doens't even know if it is an epic. also, in those types of videos, people talk about the first impressions about the camera itself, not how comfy the rig is or so. somebody watching this video will not have a first look on a red epic camera. and again, i'm not hating, i love dave's job, i just gave my honest opinion about this particular video.

  • Haha you are so right! She has no idea how to hold it:)

  • I have never ever seen a crew filming down in my town! I saw someone shooting for TV the other day when I was in London, oh and someone with what looked like to be a 7D filming a short film.

    If only I had a 550D :-(

  • Red Epic's - you're talking $30-40K so it would have to be excellent in low light. Looks like you can rent one for about $3k per day....

  • That's a RED epic alright.

  • secod

  • First, yay!
