First concert I ever saw: Rory Gallagher opening for (and mopping the floor with) T-Rex at the Multi-Purpose room at the University of Manitoba in 1973. It was the same stage set up as this and opened with Bolan lying on the star and being launched as the star rose from the stage. Alas, T-Rex sucked and were no match for Mr. Gallagher.... :>)
@Rossvegas12345 each to their own, I saw Rory in London 1980 and T.REX 1976, Bolan's concert was far better that Rory, even though I love Rory more to day, Bolan still out shines him
i guess what i liked was, that he was a showman.a quality totally lacking in most concerts we have these days.to go back in time to see t rex would be fantastic.
He looks pretty overweight, but that's a face-melting guitar sound coming from his Les Paul if a little bit out of tune...nice organ sound pumping away as well.
@dourtan Yeah...;] he wasn't completely lost.I even wonder if it was a Fender,(that guitar looked pretty beat up),just some stunt double ,for this purpose. Most of these guitar 'destroying'bands (Who) always changed guitar ,when the 'destroy' act came.
You know what occurs to me while watching this. In a time where David Bowie invented the persona of Ziggy Stardust - Marc simply reinvented the persona...of Marc. Damn I miss that guy.
My sis was a huge Bolan fan and took me to see him a few times when I was 13. In another song called "Solid Gold Easy Action" the lyrics go "Life is the same and it always will be, as easy as pulling foxes from a tree" We all know that he died crashing into a tree but did you know the car reg was FOX1.
Also Marc had been ill on this tour as proven by Natalie McDonald who ran the U.S fanzine electric warrior freepress at this time. Marc's medical bills were sent to her by Marc's team in the U.S so this is proven. And before you say it, it wasn't drug abuse that the medical bills were for.
Marc just couldnt crack the US like all the other British superstars had,and this version of T Rex was rubbish with the soul singers etc, just didnt work,he couldnt see it and wouldnt listen to anyone....
Because for one the U.S wan't ready for Glam like Marc portrayed it. Took a while for Bowie to break through. Also glam was essentially a Brit thing, many big brit glam outfits didn't break the u.s. Even here in the U.K fans deserted him due to the soul influence, but Bolan was brave enough to follow his own mind and not that of media or anyone else! superb!
Funny how heavily coked-up Marc put his precious Les Paul Custom carefully to one side then trashed the cheap Fender Strat. Gloria looked hot too. He used that star on the 1974 tour of England in the middle of a huge T REX sign, part of the Pink Floyd lighting rig.
@ nigshakespeare - lol, I noticed that also. Maybe he was tired of fenders? He was making that les paul sound pretty great. Though it was twice as loud as the rest of the band - which I doubt was an accident. :D
@ouchyg Indeed. In the Born to Boogie film at Wembley he tells the mixing desk crew via the mic that there's "too much bass in the monitors", prompted, methinks, by Bolan feeling Steve Currie's ace bass playing was stealing the show rather than there actually being too much bass in the monitors.
@delflord I know what he said and what he apparently intended, but I'm not convinced he was being genuine. Marc was a great showman both visually and sonically and was sensitive to anyone stealing his thunder.
His tone is really cool on this but I gotta admit I liked the versions where he left more space between the notes.....made it sound more stinkin' to me with the gaps in there
Marc looked like he was possessed...yowzer...smokin' hot! Some of us in the US "got it" - Get It On was THE party song when I was in high school. T.Rex got very little press, so most of us didn't know much about him. I read that Dick Clark offered to promote them for a big chunk of the cut, and Marc told him to take a hike. So...I really belileve there were other factors that kept Marc from being more widely known on this side of the pond. It sure wasn't lack of talent or showmanship..
You're right -- read "And Party Every Day" by Larry Harris of Casablanca Records and you'll see what a hatchet job those coked-up obnoxious New Yorkers did to Marc Bolan's career :-(
Jimmy Page/ Jeff Beck were Yardbirds who according to Simon Napier Bell replaced Geoff McLelland on the pre-Bolan Johns Children, presumably Chris Dreja on bass in lieu of the immeasurably clueless Hewlett.......
This maybe the best live lead playing I've ever seen from Bolan. Normally he utilizes the same kind of stock hammer ons like on the 12th fret, but this is some seriously tasty shit. God. This is fucking super hot. Compare this playing to his Midnite Special playing. Sounds like he learned a whole bunch. Fuck, this is good.
Just for the record kiddies, this was recorded live on the Don Kirshner Rock show 1974. Bolan was a on fire here for sure ... High as kite as well ... Have you ever heard a sexier rock and rock version of Get it On, Bang a Gong ? Pure Electricity !!! Nice and Raw the way live rock and roll is meant to be played live ..... If you want to hear a studio recording stay home and listen records ... Marc RIP brother !!
is it me or is it just marc keepin song going with his gibson, at some point in this video the band sound like there fallin apart...just sounds so un natural and lotta band members too ! but woha marc is awesome on that gibson...just dynamite !
June Child-Bolan had a baby girl (Ilona) with the Arrows drummer Paul Varley around 1976. Yes, June and marc were never legally divorced, just separated. I'm sure Marc and June loved each other until the end, you're correct, in spite of them having different live in partners. Gloria had a son with Marc, Rolan. This is all fact and well documented.
hahaha - the main riff was stolen by Oasis, that's no news. But in the original recordings on both artists, there's a difference, sound wise - here in this particular version, it sounds EXACTLY like Oasis' live versions of Cigarettes and Alcohol.
I've just watched this again. God Gloria's voice is screeching and awful and how I wish Marc had walked away from her with his music...at the very least! I'll never back down from that. Perhaps she loved him, but she really destroyed his mind, music and finally his life.
skilski2003 - Hey parasite! Check yourself before you wreck yourself! Your ears need a good cleaning! God Only Knows what's in your collection and what you favour! Here's hoping you never buy my records!
I so agree with you!!! I know sometimes 'live' may not be the best but her 'foreground' screeching is absolutely horrible. If only we had his magic wand ...
oh dear, which galaxy are you from !!! bolan could kick the crap out of any performer in his time, he was the best and always will be, shock on marc and bollocks to those who have failed to sprinkle a little glitter beneath their eyes in their dull little lives ..punkle kevin x x
Too bad Marc was so tired and stressed to crack the american market ! His not entering the hall of fame is a true shame but nevermind, MARC BOLAN is the best !
The drummer is Davey Lutton, in T.Rex late 1973 to late 1976. A Northern Irishman whose previous band Eire Apparent were produced by Jimi Hendrix, in 1977/78 he -together with the late Steve Currie on bass here- became the rhythm section for Wreckless Eric
I adore Marc and there's no denying he's hot here--the sexiest, most gorgeous man ever!! Hate to see him looking so heavy and HATE Gloria who drove the car that killed him.
