I'll never forget when our pianist gave a B natural starting pitch instead of a Bb.... the strings vs. the choir in a minor 2nd death match... lol. Glad this was a different concert!
@BlackBeltDude05 Glad you like it! This is actually a college choir- from Azusa Pacific University (in California). I've graduated since posting this video, but the music program is still really strong there, from what I can tell. :)
Not to mention DJ Tiesto - who made the most unbelievable trance version you can imagine!! And it also features in the soundtrack of the Homeworld PC game. Sound absolutely GREAT whatever the version. Crazy as it may sound, it's been chosen as the favorite for my own funeral.
I'm in chorus and we're learning Angus Dei. Dona Nobis pacem. Riversong (with flute, violin, piano and bass :D). Earth song. Blow Away The Morning Dew.
this song...this was one of our most painful experiences... everytime Dr. Cathey told us we were singing this song we were all....ugh....hahaha but it turned out not so bad! yeah we tried to do it with just the voices and that wasn't going very well so we tried to practice it with the strings and after practicing it a few times we decided to keep it with the strings as well.
Fondly remember being pulled out of the classroom by KoK and escorted to Church to sing alto to the beautifull voice of Marylou for funeral Mass. She and I gaged our impact by the family reaction down below. Whether Journey or Mozart, music can uplift the soul.
WHY ARE STRINGS AND CHOIR DOING THIS? it's for one or the other. i have never seen both doing it. it doesn't work. did barber sanction this? bad decision.
Congratulations, now you've seen it! Robert Shaw's edition actually allows for an organ to underscore the voices, organdude- so why not strings? It fills out the sound and is *gasp* quite nice! Barber just might have approved.
It is the spirit of the music and text and a commitment to excellence that makes it work, not a rigid compliance to a particular instrumentational choice. Plus, music performance should not flatter the composer, but rather bring truth and life.
Well Homeworld kinda ruined the song for me then. Whenever I hear it I can't think of anything but the Mothership taking off or Taiidani destroying Kharak. Oh well
I disagree. It outlined the whole atmosphere of the game. This piece has a sad feel to it and the Kushans story is full of sadness. But everyone releates this piece to an event they heard it from, but whenever i hear this, the thought of a camera panning across a battlefeild always pops into my head. All in all, Homeworld did't ruin the song because it was because of homeworld you couldve known this. wouldnt you agree?
A former pastor was unmusical almost to the point of anit-musical. Our organist played this asa Prelude and when he got to the 'Great Pause' the pastor got up and said "Good morning" before the organist could complete the work.
this is the kind of song that just gets at your heart and never lets go via perfect harmony and beautify melody, I give thanks to Samuel adagio for writing this and doing such an amazing job with it. 5 out 0f 5
Just to help you find more works by him, his name is Samuel Barber. Adagio refers to the tempo of the music. "Adagio, in musical notation, a tempo marking indicating that the music is to be played slowly" - Wikipedia.
my friend is in choir and goes to Azuza. i love chorus

I was in UC in '97-'98; we did this without the orchestra...it was harder than crud. I would ALWAYS lose my place in the score!

sorry but the song must be longer
also, this sounds far too young for a college choir.
but good blend

@polychronio - Probably. This song has been used in several movies, in both choral and string versions.
Wikipedia listed these movies/tv shows: Platoon, The Elephant Man, The Simpsons, Seinfeld, The Pick of Destiny, Lorenzo's Oil, and Amélie.

Yes, well, but this song was written well before your video game was created...
I guess we can all relate to it in our own ways.

hey SHines01, thank you for the tale of the "unmusical pastor" those critters abound in a multitude of mutations.

amazing, I only wish that the choir I'm in could sing this version.

Adagio is as beautiful done as a choral as done by orchestra as done by solo musicians. It's just a hauntingly beautiful melody that translates well.
