Needless to say, the sound track from the film being watched influences the experience of seeing the final work by Abbas. Take a look at Warhol's "Screen Tests" where he puts random people in front of a camera doing nothing for a few minutes. Much better idea and executed more beautifully but less crowd pleasing.
Looks like Kiarostami's worst film. Most of these people are not blinking to make their eyes tear. It is so bad. Ahh and the music and sound track just makes it Hollywood, not a new discovery really. i think he is above this film.
@goodcyrus Have you ever seen Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 "Romeo and Juliet"? THAT is what the women are watching in this short film. Have you ever seen Jean Luc Godard's 1962 "Vivre Sa Vie" in which the lead actress WATCHES an even older film called Passion of Jeanne d'Arc by Theadore Dreyer (not a made up film within a film but an actual classic piece of cinema) and is so affected by the tragedy depicted onscreen that she cries?
Not blinking eyes? Hollywood soundtrack? I don't get you, man.
Most of these actresses are very conscious about being filmed so they are faking emotions to various levels. Abbas did not direct them to do so, they are just doing it and it just looks fake. An old trick to shed tears in any situation is to hold your eyes open for a minute or two until they hurt and water and then blink. It is so fake!! That said I like most of Abbas's films. I even prefer some of his works to some of Goddard's.
hey just try to appreciate his works.... you dont have to watch them if you dont like them. Just be respectful to him as he is to almost every other film maker.... he is one of the world's best filmmakers and there are people all around the world who appreciate his films.
It is amazing that I love many of his movies, but gradually I find out his claim to make a cinema without "directing" element, a cinema without "feeling and emotion"(referring to his recent interview in an Iranian
news paper about his new approach to totally dismantle the side of "drama" from his films")is really showing his total failair in such an approach, because obviously in this one he is so master to make every one cry hard a cinema so much loaded with drama and emotion.
