i just bought this thing and i cam getting all sorts of crappy noise and just very poor ass quality. what am i doing wrong? should i just always be shooting in cine-mode with the white light/exposure turned up?? what are you using to convert?? i need help! thanks man

This camera doesn't have a light on it. I had a lamp in my face. lol -- you can buy a light attachment and connect it to the "mini hotshoe" on top of the camera -- and you could get a get microphone attachment for it too ;)

Well, if you look at my videos, I can never get my HG20 clips to look Full Screen just like your video right here, there are always black borders around them. Is there a certain file format that I need to upload with?

I use Sony Vegas and After Effects... any suggestions for the camera adjustment itself?

if you use sony vegas import the clip there and right click and go down to switches and uncheck maintain aspect ratio

I forgot the actual menu setting on it, but you can turn off the focus assist. When in record mode, you can bring up you "function/quick menu" (I don't remember the actual name) by pressing in the joystick. When that menu is up, press DOWN until you get to the focus, and then the UP to change between the auto focus and manual focus. When set to manual focus, press LEFT/RIGHT to adjust the focus accordingly. Hopefully that made sense. ;)

Basically I was able to get BestBuy to do a price match for a local store who had a sale (but I didn't like the place that originally had it for sale -- mainly because they didn't really offer any protection plans of any sort). But yeah, BestBuy for the win. I love BestBuy's protection plan apparently.

Yeah for sure, it is a great camera I went downtown last night to see how it faired outdoors in partially lit, well lit, and badly lit areas. It worked out just fine. I am going to mess with it today during the day, check out some of the manual focus options and what not. Holla!

Epic fail -- it has a "Flash" light for the photos. No actual continuous light. Unless I'm unaware that it does has a continuous light -- which is shouldn't because everywhere that I've seen, you would have to buy the external light attachment. :D

your vids are cool man. Just got the HG20 a couple week ago, and was wondering how you convert the m2ts files into files useable by most editing programs. Most aren't compatible with mts files. and converting them to mpeg with the software that came with the camera makes them a smaller resolution. Hey man, the video quality is great. I have one quick question though... What are you using to edit your videos? I've heard that it's hard to find a computer that could handle HD video well.

I've got a laptop that's brand new, it's pretty good but definitely not the best. any idea if I could handle HD?

Depends on what you got on the laptop. I use a basic Late 2006 model MacBook (regular - NOT MacBook Pro). It has only 2GBs of ram -- and I use Final Cut Express 4.0 for editing. I don't have many problems at all with my mac (however it could use a little more ram and whatnot to help make the rendering quicker) -- so I think you should be fine. :D

Dude, I'm not sure if I've responded to this already, but I don't see a reply comment for it. To answer your question (if I didn't already) -- There's no macro settings that I know of on the camera. For this, I stood right in from of the camera, possibly with VERY VERY MINIMAL to NO zoom. This photos also weren't manipulated or enhanced in anyway -- so with that said -- this is a really dope camera. Just make sure you shop around. Cheers.

Yeah man, you can't really compare the photo quality of the Canon HG20 to an DSLR camera like the Nikon D90 because they are two completely different classes, each specializing in one specific place, video or photo. It's up to you on what you would prefer -- specializing in photography, or videography. lol -- I already made a video for your request. Imma go send it to you now.
