Carrera came from Carrera Pan America a road race in Mexico which Porsche did well in during the 50s and so their lightweight racers adopted the name Carrera.
The name Carrera was applied to this as it was lightweight, powerful and some decent modifications
The later use of Carrera on 911 was really a marketing excercise which debased the value of the name
Agreed. One of the biggest marketing mistakes ever made by Porsche was to call the 1984 (US) normal street 3.2 911 "Carrera." The name Carrera had always been used to designate only very special models.
Yes, the series II 924 turbo was hopped up into a limited run of street legal cars called the 924 Carrera GT. Flares, 16" 7 +8 Fuchs, 210HP. Then there were fewer 924 Carrera GTS race cars made. At COMEAU RACING here in San Diego, we're currently constructing a 924 Carrera GT replica, but on a 1987 924S chassis so it has all the more modern engine, tranny, susp pick up points.

Carrera stands for racing in German so Porsche can put it on any model they wish too.

@82porsche928 No, Carrera is a name Porsche has used related to the now-gone Carrera Panamericana race. Rennsport is the word for racing.

Okay I'm a youngin' bare with me. Do explain how the 924 is a Carrera. I thought 911 was the only Carrera?

The Carrera name has been applied by Porsche to models in the 356, 924, 911 ranges, and obv the Carrera GT.

I recall Derek Bell owns a red one.

True. He's got a red GTS. He originally didn't want a front engined Porsche, or a red one, but has owned his GTS since '81.
