they deserved the Sweeptstakes Trophy! This reminds me of The Azusa High School Marching Band of the 60's. Under Ross Davis we garnered the highest scores in history! See Azusa High Marching Band on youtube, 1964. I was in the drum section.
Every time I watch this film it hits me like a wall. I must admit, I didn't know the band program at Irving High was so rockin' during the 60s!! I was in this high school band in the late 70s. It was a very successful program in my day and exciting to be a part of, but I never knew how it was in the decade before me. Now I can see that the roots go further back! As someone else said here, it makes me proud to be part of this school band's heritage.
Well, this gave me chills -- I was there. My brother and I were in the percussion section. I graduated in 1966. I remember every minute of this performance and the years I played in the band. Mr. Jantzen was the director and we had 110 members. We won the UIL Sweepstakes award with this performance.
I still get get chills watching these films from the 60's, although this was the contest film the year after I graduated. There is nothing like working up a precision show and blowing everybody also away with the execution and sound. Ralph Wilson, Horn '64.
Was this when Irving was the only High School in Irving (before Mac and Nimitz) It has to be looking at the size of this band! The sound is tremendous and superior...kudos to the directors and drum majors!
I marched in the military style for Irving High School from 1983-1987. I just sat here in tears watching this wonderful performance! I was in awe, especially of that section toward the end with the extremely long ranks. Every rank was SO straight! Way to cover down!
I'm proud to be a part of the IHS marching band heritage. Dignity, honor, pride!
Wow!! I was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1964 and then moved to Irving, TX. I went to Nimitz from 1979-1983. I remember Irving still doing military marching when Nimitz and MacArthur were doing corp style.
LOOK HOW HUGE AND ORGONIZED IT WAS BACK THEN!

I once designed an entrance like that. It never got performed. To think, I was only about 40 years behind on innovating new moves. GREAT Video!
