The Fab Five also did another Christmas promo for MTV at the same time, dressed in the same New Traditionalists outfits, in which Mark says, "We all know Christmas can be a SAD time." I haven't seen it in 30 years -- do you, or does anyone, have it or know where I can see it?
'Merry Christmas' from Devo? Awesome. These days, the 'politically correct' entertainment industry would just say 'Happy Holidays' because 'Jesus' is offensive to their distorted sensibilities.
Devo making MTV promos? Holy shit. Today that would be totally unthinkable, since MTV itself is proof that De-evolution is real.
A music channel that started as a brave new, independent force in which music that wasn't played by commercial radio or regular tv channels got introduced to the ignorant masses, devolved into a dumbed down giant, who shovs down marketable and profitable "music" into the minds (?) of the young.
At least in the 90's they mostly played music, unlike today.
HA!! Here Devo are endorsing MTV!! Funny thing is, it wasn't too long after this that MTV began playing ohh Micheal Jackson, Def Lepard, Kenny Logins, U2, Phil Collins, Huey Lewis, Bon Jovi et all and just kind'a forgot about THESE guys.
Devo did these in '81, and there was a third one which I've been wanting to see again throughout all of these years; I only saw it once but I never forgot it. It starts with Mark saying "We all know Christmas can be a SAD time...;" does anyone else out there remember that one?
Thanks for sharing these, and a merry something to you.
How do you stay in any business with out "selling out"...I was was under the impression that if you are a business eg. music business, you would want to sell out...
Wait do mean to be like a teenager or just born? i was born in '83 it kicked ass but all the older kids said they wouldnt trust kids that werent born in the 70's. Yea 1 of my 1st words was mohawk, and when i was little i wanted 1 mega bad. I loved my Rude Dog cloths(if you dont know google that shit, its cold) & my keith haring air walks... goddamn Kmart had sick ass gear back then. itd sucked to be born in the 90's, thats too bad.
nice; you gettin the new colored vinyl remasters or the original vinyl? I'm curious to listen to Brian Eno's original Master of "Are We Not Men?" , but the yellow vinyl does sound nice.
Selling out, to me ( regarding music, art, and such ), is when talented artists sacrifice their own creative originality in favor of mainstream acceptance,..I would'nt exactly say that Devo ever realy did THAT. The mainstream media ( MTV included ) was just very fickle with them, thats all.
You really can't say DEVO sold out.... sold out to what? They were doing commercials for Honda Scooters in the 80's... they were getting paid as commercial actors...they were paid for use of their song Watch Us Work It by Dell... they were paid as musicians. Just because other people use their work doesn't mean they're selling out... They haven't replaced the Devo on their uniforms with Dell...
Their best music was on their first three albums ( Are We Not Men, Duty Now For The Future, Freedome of Choice ). Their others were alright too ( they had a few good songs ) and, of course, they were always progresive.
Hell MTV was not the only tv showcase for music vids back then,..or even the first. I vividly recal that there were other, even earlier, televised forums for them. Like I remember that comercial-free pay tv channels were already showing them, uncensord no yet, during gaps between schedueld programs,.....
...and even on comercial television there were programs like Night Flight, Video West and The Kenny Everritt Show to name a few ( Those were regular program-length shows run on syndicated tv, usualy late at night on weekends ). So MTV was never realy THAT ground breaking to begin with. In fact, I even think that it realy kinda ruind the whole music video phenomenon,..in an artistic sense anyway ( They began being made for promotional rather than creative reasons ).
Nowadays, they should call MTV RTV because it's all reality TV. Today's pop culture is horrible in my opinion. I wish I was a product of the 80's, but I'm a semi-proud product of the 90's.
you are right man. the pop industry has downspirled, and there is now oringinal picture like this. they should a one month 24/7 music/interview thing they did in the 80's.
The Dead Kennedys got it right in 1984. MTV Get Off The Air .. Now! Devo absolutley rule, and it seems unlikley for them to be on MTV, but they were pioneers of the music video, so I'm sure for a while they thought MTV was their place.
Many thanks for sharing this. It's the nearest thing I've seen to a Devo promo I've wanted to see again since my only viewing of it in '81... maybe you have this one also? In their New Traditionalists clothes and Devo-doos, the spudboys filmed an MTV clip in which Mark or Jerry says, "We all know that Christmas can be a SAD time..." If you have this, please, please share it!
A video from the days when MTV was new and pioneering. To bad it has become the vile, perverted, piece of shit that it is today. I agree, Youtube has carried on the tradition that MTV started. Thanks Youtube!
YouTube is better than MTV ever was so enjoy it before they start charging $100 per month for hateful game shows and some new fucked up form of violent and hateful pseudocapitalist buffoonery.
I doubt if anyone was saying in 1983 " what this station(MTV) needs is reality shows about flaky west coast teens, and gay men going on dates with camera crews. " I know I wasn't...
Because you were born too late, Hansmiseur. Now you have to endure Yanni, Spears and Lockwood. Professionalism has been replaced by Ali G, Borat and American Pie. Sorry, we no longer have talent on this continent. It has been sucked dry by the U.S. Fluoride bill and the American Vaccine amendment.
Remember to get your flu shots this year. We can't have you bastards trying to think and be creative. Die slave.
Devo made it a Beautiful World back in the day! Really, the first example of rock group as ironic concept! And they played it straight! Check them out on Letterman, where Devo stays in character (Pee Wee Herman style) all the way through the interview, cheesing Dave off to no end! Great posting, thanks!
Thanks for sharing this!
