I really want to watch this movie but i am afraid it is too heartbreaking. I bookmarked it several days ago and somehow i can´t get to it. Sylvia´s story is so sad...
I love her........she died in a time when a womans depression was not taken as seriously and post-partem depression wasn't known as well as it is now :(
I hate to say it but a cult has arisen around the death of Sylvia Plath and not nearly as much attention has been given to her poetry. That's a shame and a loss however I do understand why this type of death of a great talent could become a focal point of interest. The tragedy was that there would be no more poetry from this unique woman. She had a tortured, brilliant, creative mind. A tremendous talent that's been lost.
Is there a different version of this film about does anyone know? I could swear i've seen the same film but with an intro where she reads from Lady Lazarus instead!
It's very easy to judge and be opinionated just as my last message shows, however, I now believe there is no-one to blame and the matter should be finally laid to rest, and let's face it, who are we to judge (first stone thrown and so on) and take sides. It's all very old water under a very old bridge.
She was not mentally ill ! She suffered from depression: there is an ocean of difference; even if she wasn't depressed, do you anyone else who after having their life shattered into pieces would then smile and say "oh well, sh%t happens?" Ted was the centre of her life, and I suppose he thought she wouldn't kill herself, after having been left to struggle on her own with two kids whist being humiliated.... Ted you was wrong, and he was wrong to destroy the 'missing' journal. We all screw up tho.
I have to portray Sylvia Plath for two days at school... This movie is really helping me get a feel on how to speak and act while I portray her. Thanks so much for posting! It'll help me a lot!
It's as if Ted Hughes inadvertently made her feel unworthy of the very thing she loved, and the one thing in life that could bring her back from the dead. She struggled to find her own voice, or rescue it.
@SomeCrazyShit1 Ted was kissing Sylvia while making eyes at the other woman, so Sylvia bit him to mark her territory. She let him know that she possessed him in a way, and was not someone to passively let him walk away after being intimate with her.
@DragonflyNoir10 though I largely agree with the middle ground, the passage i read in her journals yesterday nearly convinces otherwise:
"I get quite appalled when I realize my whole being [...] has grown and interwound so completely with Ted's that if anything were to happen to him, I do not see how I could live. I would either go mad, or kill myself." (The Journals of Sylvia Plath, 2/26/57, p. 156)
That is some significant codependence... especially having been married for less than a year.
@bbbbakerbbbb158 I don't think you can blame it ALL on him, but I don't quite get why you'd want to go out of your way to defend him. And btw, his next wife (the woman he cheated on Plath with) also ended up killing herself. I'm not saying it's all him. But there does seem to be a pattern here...
it is funny how ppl spout about others being "mentally ill".
what is 'mentally ill' ? except in few genetic disorders or actual physical damage to the brain, causing disabilities, mental illness is impossible to define
we may all be mentally ill for all anybody knows. or not!
@bbbbakerbbbb158 plath meets hughes, marries hughes, she kills herself. Hughes' next partner kills herself and their daughter...and you say you cant blame hughes?
No it isn't. It's the altered Fig Tree Story from The Bell Jar.
And honestly I cannot imagine that she says "Dying is an art." on the DVD, since this is an original quote from Lady Lazarus and as far as I know, they weren't allowed to use original quotes, becase Frieda Hughes was not happy about this movie!
@anolta I just bought the DVD last night, and it does say "Dying is like an art, like everything else, I do it exceptionally well." Which is a much better start to the film than this one, haha.
In the DVD I have, she says something different in the beginning of this film. She says something like "dying is like an art. I exceptionally do well." I wonder why there are 2 versions.
