i have a question, do you use a special kind of pick on a mandolin?(like a guitar pick or something) or do you use something else? please somebody tell me as soon as possible, thank you.
It depends, there are aspects that make the mandolin harder than the violin, and parts of a violin that are harder than the mandolin. Some of that however may be because i have played the violin longer than the mandolin, but so far it's basically the same.
Yes, very much so. To make violin playing not sound painfully bad takes quite a bit of technical work and, ideally, training. The mandolin, at least in my experience, is easier to "stumble" your way through.
the only thing an acoustic guitar is going to help you with for playing the mandolin is giving you calices. other than that youre better off by playing the violin
I'm a violin player and want to start playing the mandolin. Does anyone know if playing the mandolin is a lot like playing the violin? in the videos it seems kind of like it is the same.
Extremely similar... Most stringed instruments overlap a lot. The best bass player I know played violin for years before trying bass. Especially if you know the notes, not just the frets(Or lack there of on a violin)
i used to play violin and have recently started to play the mandolin also. A friend of mine said that the tuning in the mandolin and violin are the same and so are the techniques. Rest easy, you'll learn a lot faster than most people.
It is Basicly the same. They have the same spacing and everything. Mandolin will be easier for you because it has frets compared to the violin/fiddle.
so i just baught a mandolin...its at home...and im still at my duty station (army) i have yet to see it and play it...but when i get to use it...does it use normal guitar strings or will i hafta try to find special strings made for the mandolin??? (question to anyone)
Did your mandolin not come with strings or were they extra? Seriously, don't mess with guitar strings, they will probably be the wrong weight making it difficult to stop the strings effectively and you run the risk of damaging the instrument by over-tension.
no they should have strings...i was just asking for when i eventually hafta replace em. havent seen the mandolin yet so i havent seen the strings either. i was just curious.
I'm a fiddle player/teacher & a guitar player/teacher trying 2 learn mandolin. I watched your video 2 see how u pick it. Thanks 4 posting this & showing me how. Your video is very helpful 2 someone who knows little about it & how 2 play it right. Those other jerks r 2 cheap to go pay for real lessons, so they'll just put you down for trying. Excellent 1st lesson!
as a beginner u need to know ur strings e.a.d.g ,then u learn the scale, sounds hard but after a few practices u fly along , i still think u pick up tunes..song.. far easier by ear for example play along to a cd to a song u sing in ur head this worked for me
A beginner would need to learn where the strings are and how hard to pick. If you listen to someone doing this for the first time they will never keep a steady rhythm, volume and tone. There is a lot of control to be learnt by this exercise.

From my experience, each pair of strings is played as if it were one string. You don't try to separate the two, just strum (pick) through each pair.
SirWolfgaar 2 years ago 2
do you play both strings at the same time when you do single picking or do you do just one

... I reckon this instrument would be fucking metal added right before a solo track.

Half Japenese barely knew their instruments and they aounded great. You don't "need" to know shit^^
doom876 4 years ago
I like Half Japanese, but if every band in the world sounded like them, I would lose my mind.
You shouldn't diss someone for wanting to be better at an instrument, silly boy.
