a child can better express emotions that an adult. These days baradnatyam is trained even at the age of 6 or 7 for instance.A child's cry for attention is more expressive of emotion than an adult about anger or love.
It's not only about the emotion and the poses - you have to have very precise and rhythmic steps to match the thalam - that's what takes so many years of training.
Also, although children may be more natural at displaying emotion, they've never learned how to do it to music and understand the lyrics. :)
It's not only about the emotion and the poses - you have to learn very precise steps to match the thalam - that's what takes so many years of training.
And I agree with you that a child's emotions may mean more to us, but again, you still have to fit the music. :)
i think barathanatyam postures are not difficult for a youngster compared to older person.Someone who practices yoga must be able to master baradanatyam in few months i guess.
Hmm...seems to me that mastering the movement isn't all there is to bharathanatyam. You have to be able to emote effectively, and I can say from experience as a teacher that controlling facial expressions and emotions are what youngsters have the most trouble with! :)
Aranketram or arangetram is a tamil word written in english just like rangapravesham in karnataka.
The point is whether arangetram or rangapravesham applies not just for dance but other artistic performaces as well. It is an act of performing any art and not exclusively refered to the dance.I enjoyed watching these dances specially the descriptions of each and every moves and expressions since english speaking world would be able to appreciate india's ancient fine art better.Best wishes 2 u.
Aranketram (arankam-raised platform, etram-etruthal-get up to )and not arangetram.
Aranketram refer not just for dance but also other performances such as Vocal, flute or Tabla etc.
A guru or master in general present his or her pupil to audience after training on a first step to a long career as a solo performer. I met the likes of late Padmini, and her niece Shobana among many prominet artists.I look for someone who can dance while i sing 1000 names of sri lalita shahasranamam.
Well the spelling isn't really what matters, is it? I do believe it's the principle of the thing. What you call it also depends on where in India you are from. For instance, in Karnataka the arangetram goes by "rangapravesham" instead.
Having spent a long time working up to doing one, I know exactly what an arangetram is. Thank you for your comment, though. :)
This is a wonderful video! You did a great job. :) I have recently started learning Bharatanatyam myself and am loving every second of it! Your performace was excellent!
ohh yea and i think my all time favouriter production would be mistress of spices! i read the book and i thought it was awesome but i thought the production was even awesome-er.
No, not everyone. I had those costumes made especially for my arangetram, and I know one other girl who has a similar-colored costume but in the skirt style instead of the pant style.
i feel proud that you are of indian ancestry and is learning more of your indian dance traditions you are great dancer and may maa durga bless you always to continue to excel and be an example for those of indian ancestry vande mataram!!
That was a very well put together video. I really enjoyed it and I felt you did a great job explaining exactly what an arangetram was. Your dancing was amazing too. Congratulations! I'm glad to see there are people as dedicated as you to Bhartanatyam.
Also about the narration. I love them. Our dance school does those too mainly because we perform for American audiences who generally have aboslutely no idea what is going on in the item. They are realy helpful =)
I agree completely. I find myself in the same situation when watching other varieties of dance.
In the dance school I am a member of, all performances come with a program that explains each piece in English and many include a demo (like the one in my video) before each piece.
Indeed, I used to think all these dances were something you had to guess at, but its clear there's a story behind all the moves which makes it all the more enjoyable once you understand what's going on. Its like someone translating a poem from another language.
To be honest I feel deprived since I've seen a good deal of classical Indian dancing but have never known the background tale. Dance companies really must include narration or the program you mentioned. Its a shame they haven't clued in
Really really good :) beautiful...!

When the dance is explained it makes it all clear-otherwise its like reading a foreign language, it might look pretty but its indecipherable.
This would gain a much large audience if it was narrated as you did while dancing-quite amazing!
