Sylvian would of made perfect sense as KC front guy. He can sing and play as needed. He is heir to the throne because of his UK backround. Adran B's seemed to be an americanized version of KC. I believe it was to be called discipline .couldn' t resist the product label ole frippy. Dave S would have interpreted In TCOTCK very well.
in reality king crimson mk 6? sylvian shoulda let the label be put on and kept this going. it certaintly raised eyebrows. funny how the kc got back right afta this deal.who knows why davy didn't bite on the line. hubris, ego, boredom, will never know.
@kc01002 I think it's a Stick, the Warr Guitar has a body and if I'm not wrong, Trey Gunn usually plays it horizontally... besides the lowest pitched strings are in the center of the fingerboard, which is characteristical of the Cahpman Stick... anyway, the video doesn't really help to distinguish which instrument is =P
Kindof reminds of Bowie in a way...not bad. I much prefer that really progressive playing outside the box Robert Fripp personally speaking. Thanks for posting.
Line up is like a King Crimson projeKct: Fripp on guitar, Gunn on stick, Mastelotto on drums, Sylvian on vox and guitar treatments, and another on bass (who is not Levin but I don't know offhand who it is). I love how Fripp always makes his voice heard in whatever he works on. Thanks for the upload.
In those days there was no King Crimson, so this band was truly welcomed, I was hoping Sylvian would accept a place in the new Crimson, but I don't think he really liked working with Fripp.,on an interview I read on Future Music, he said that the works with Fripp where not among his favorite records.
To me, this is perfect progressive pop. The main difference between Sylvian and Belew is that Adrian is much more creative, awesome musicianship ( Zappa, Talking Heads, Bowie ) and along with Fripp, they have created and amazing guitar duo, instead of this line up, where it is fripp and colaborators,...
This is excelent, but seriously, King Crimson is top!
Jose - Are you serious about David Sylvian? Have you followed his work?
Of course you are welcome to your opinion. And, I certainly don't see the same thing. He is very, very creative. A guitar virtuoso he is not, and ... he's a brilliant writer/fabulous vocalist. And smart enough to put himself with the likes of the worlds greatest creative minds in the music biz as well.
This could have been King Crimson in an alternate reality... Only reason it didn't happen, was because Adrian Belew got re-elected as guitarist/singer of KC.
Is 'God's Monkey' the hopeless thoughtless modern consumer or am I missing the point? Just what is he talking about? Anyone know for sure - or does it mean whatever I believes it means - like a thought poem reflecting the interpreter.
crazysailorman - "or does it mean whatever I believes it means" - you pretty much nailed it - in fact you may have nailed Life itself in that sentence.
"whatever I believe it means" could be applicable to a lot of work involving Fripp. Doesn't seem to matter who he works with - they get Fripped. Akin to how a great painter has a peculiar (neutral sense) brushstroke: Fripp is a genre unto Himself. The time with Sylvain borders on Metal and deep rhythms I enjoy as some of Fripp's best work.
I don't think the singer is creepy. But the song has a creepy crawly feeeling to it for sure; almost like Sylvain is tugging it along like a ballon behind him. Meditative and instinctual, but not creepy.
I consider this album and tour a King Crimson ones, I actually place it chronologically inbetween Absent lovers (last 80's crimson live show) and Vrooom (beginning of the double trio)... simply impressive and magnificient music

He also contributes a mighty amount musical input which has turned KC into a more commercial success (such being his also quite respectable guitar skills).
I agree that Belwes is a fntastic guitarits, but with Robert Fripp in the band, who needs belew. True, fripp has lately started playing less grindingly and uses more hanging pretty cords, which contrast with Belew's shredding nicely, but I don't like most of his lyrics (apart for one time) and I don't like his voice too much, (although in TPTB it soundls kind of cool when he yells).
Imagine a sextet of Fripp, Levin, Belew, Harrison, Mastoletto and Sylvian! :)
I find Sylvian's vocals to narrow and utter impressionist. I must say I adore the expressive vocals Belew applies to KC and that combined in a sextet with the low monotone vocal parts Sylvian would be singing, even I find that vision a bit of a large contrast. I am not saying Sylvian is a disappointing vocalist, I am just saying that after the shortest bit of time he tends to bore me.
pat and Trey were working with fripp- sylvian project and thats why they ended up playing in King crimson Right?, because Robert like the way they work.
No, Pat didn't play in the original Fripp/Sylvian lineup and if I recall right he just happened to pass the audition for the double trio audition when they were looking for a second drummer. When Pat played his audition he thought Fripp wasn't interested when he walked away, but in reality Fripp wanted to get a closer look of how Pat played and watched him from the behind. It was a real surprise for Pat to be a member, and he really is a fitting one!
Nope, I have a Pat M interview podcast. He flew to london when he heard that Sylvian Fripp was auditioning, landed it, then later Fripp invited him to join the new KC line up. He also invited Trey on it.
thanks, i saw Robert and David 14 years ago here in italy, Teatro Romolo Valli Reggio Emilia, but i don't remember if the drummer was Pat in that stuff. i think it was the same period of this concert
Get the Fripp/Sylvian album and the live album damage; both are a must have if you like this(my personal favorite.Dark, moody stuff mader before the Crimson double trio. Sylvain was offered the job but declined.
its both, you fret with both hands to create the note no strumming needed,so you can get wacky highs and rumbling bottom...few guys on here doing demo type stuff...
And Michael Brook on backing guitar is no slouch either. He basically invented the sustainer guitar that was then further developed and marketed by Fernandes.
