  • la perfection absolue... presque trop !

  • 'one push you fall in.....find the ladder....climb the ladder......God's Monkey'

  • Absolutely great!!!!

  • excellente reception ,it make me back inbetween 10et 15 years...

  • I double the curse on the film maker for shaky bullsh

  • Trey Gunn on Chapman Stick, Michael Brook , guitar (though I don't see him on this track, I believe he was part of the "Damaged" tour). Might want to check out Brook's very engaging production work with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Try Mustt Mustt. Good stuff. Respect from Michigan. Peace.

  • @donaldnewmanmedone

You can actually see Michale there at 0:37, far right.

  • Trey Gunn on Chapman Stick, Michael Brook , guitar. Might want to check out Brook's very engaging production work with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Try Mustt Mustt. Good stuff. Respect from Michigan. Peace.

  • that the pointer sisters drum beat, by the way

  • Where phylosophy meets the the fretboard.

  • Cool

  • might as well be brian ferry who tried out for kc as well as elton john

  • Never mind Clapton, fripp is god

  • @sitwosaints no doubt

  • I put a curse on the "cinematographer" How does a bunch of shaky, out of focus, film school shit enhance the viewing experience?

  • Sylvian would of made perfect sense as KC front guy. He can sing and play as needed. He is heir to the throne because of his UK backround. Adran B's seemed to be an americanized version of KC. I believe it was to be called discipline .couldn' t resist the product label ole frippy. Dave S would have interpreted In TCOTCK very well.

  • in reality king crimson mk 6? sylvian shoulda let the label be put on and kept this going. it certaintly raised eyebrows. funny how the kc got back right afta this deal.who knows why davy didn't bite on the line. hubris, ego, boredom, will never know.

  • wanking

  • OMG...

  • Lovely where free-associating at the keyboard can land you. Thanks!

  • great!!...

  • I actually believe the wide-necked instrument could be a Warr Guitar, which can look similar to a Stick.

  • @kc01002 Its a chapman stick. He also plays warr though.

  • @kc01002 I think it's a Stick, the Warr Guitar has a body and if I'm not wrong, Trey Gunn usually plays it horizontally... besides the lowest pitched strings are in the center of the fingerboard, which is characteristical of the Cahpman Stick... anyway, the video doesn't really help to distinguish which instrument is =P

  • 11 idiots.

  • @amh426 ?????

  • David Sylvian has THE sexiest voice ...

  • @Bass5el absolutly

  • Wow what an amazing performance! Is there a dvd available of the whole concert? Greetz from Holland

  • What's the SF at the back for? i think it's for science-fiction :)

  • @bercik1964 Sylvian and Fripp

  • Hah, this is practically King Crimson' s lineup with a different frontman. But Sylvian was asked to be in KC and declinded, wasn' t that so?

Would be interesting to hear how much different the band would probably have sounded if they were at it under the KC name and aesthetic.

  • Brilliant song...love it...album is great too!

  • Trey Gunn on Chapman Stick!!

  • amazing song

  • this is the beyond...

  • Fripp is a genius, never heard of David Sylvian before this..

  • @tomk773 well i think you you will find Sylvian is as well my friend ,,,

  • @tomk773 check out the 9 Horses CD containing "the banality of evil" (closing music for the movie The Number 23). Every cut on this CD is great.

  • Yummy.

  • Powerful.

@myrrhfish the other guy is a guitarist, not a bassist.

  • the best live concert i have ever seen in my life and i even did the catering for it.. :-)

  • Wow !

  • хорошо, молодцы! :)

  • leuke verrassende combinatie artiesten

  • Kindof reminds of Bowie in a way...not bad. I much prefer that really progressive playing outside the box Robert Fripp personally speaking. Thanks for posting.

  • very 90s

  • The 252nd rating was the five stars I had given here.

comment on song: "we us the steps to climb to God," ., typos work well here also.

comment on production=> too much separation in final product .,

final commen: OMG the monkey made it to the back of my shoulder ., again LOL

overall great stuff with blissified textures of Fripp

  • Line up is like a King Crimson projeKct: Fripp on guitar, Gunn on stick, Mastelotto on drums, Sylvian on vox and guitar treatments, and another on bass (who is not Levin but I don't know offhand who it is). I love how Fripp always makes his voice heard in whatever he works on. Thanks for the upload.

  • SHITTING CRICKEY this is the GOOOOD SHIT!!

  • Sylvian looks like Sean Malone here.

  • sylvian wouldnt have an act if he did that!! is that tony levin on base? ckeck out liquid tension experiment.

  • Well he manages to copy and do shows, it's not my probs. Levin is pretty good, saw him live, but he gotta be directed, his solo material isn't great.

  • I disagree. Tony is a fine songwriter as well. It's nice to see a bass player who is just more than a sideman.

  • wicked tune..wicked voice...love it!

  • sylvian parece gary oldman

  • Can any1 tell me what song by fripp/sylvian

has the Hendrix "foxy lady" fiff in it.

  • Brightness Falls

  • Comment removed

  • Is that Pat Mastelotto on Drums?

  • Yes, it is him, but as far as I can remember it was J.Marrota in the studio.

  • In those days there was no King Crimson, so this band was truly welcomed, I was hoping Sylvian would accept a place in the new Crimson, but I don't think he really liked working with Fripp.,on an interview I read on Future Music, he said that the works with Fripp where not among his favorite records.

  • And please dont forget Trey Gunn on stick......!!!

  • trly fantastic performance, thank you for posting

  • Yes this is THE GOOD STUFF -ain't no doubt....no fake UKZ shit here! Vocals are so important along with brilliant musicianship....FRIPP IS MY HERO!

  • To me, this is perfect progressive pop. The main difference between Sylvian and Belew is that Adrian is much more creative, awesome musicianship ( Zappa, Talking Heads, Bowie ) and along with Fripp, they have created and amazing guitar duo, instead of this line up, where it is fripp and colaborators,...

This is excelent, but seriously, King Crimson is top!

  • Jose - Are you serious about David Sylvian? Have you followed his work?

Of course you are welcome to your opinion. And, I certainly don't see the same thing. He is very, very creative. A guitar virtuoso he is not, and ... he's a brilliant writer/fabulous vocalist. And smart enough to put himself with the likes of the worlds greatest creative minds in the music biz as well.

  • This is amazing, and a likely combination too! I love Japan, and Sylvian's voice, goes well with Fripp's style.

  • david eres un dios igual que robert

  • Alternative King Crimson

  • power

  • This could have been King Crimson in an alternate reality... Only reason it didn't happen, was because Adrian Belew got re-elected as guitarist/singer of KC.

  • Okay - interpretation time!

Is 'God's Monkey' the hopeless thoughtless modern consumer or am I missing the point? Just what is he talking about? Anyone know for sure - or does it mean whatever I believes it means - like a thought poem reflecting the interpreter.

  • Comment removed

  • crazysailorman - "or does it mean whatever I believes it means" - you pretty much nailed it - in fact you may have nailed Life itself in that sentence.

  • thanks pedrojorgemonteiro

"whatever I believe it means" could be applicable to a lot of work involving Fripp. Doesn't seem to matter who he works with - they get Fripped. Akin to how a great painter has a peculiar (neutral sense) brushstroke: Fripp is a genre unto Himself. The time with Sylvain borders on Metal and deep rhythms I enjoy as some of Fripp's best work.

  • hm. quite good one. i can live with that.

but i think it's more about the utopia of reaching heaven by the rules set by god.

have you heard the news they killed one of G's monkeys today? merry easter, mate;-)

  • Powerful song! Powerful voice and a wonderful piece of art of Sylvian.

  • I don't think the singer is creepy. But the song has a creepy crawly feeeling to it for sure; almost like Sylvain is tugging it along like a ballon behind him. Meditative and instinctual, but not creepy.

  • perfect!

  • vocalist is creepy., if you can call him that

  • Well, I recall he was voted the sexiest man on earth during '77 and '78.

  • I consider this album and tour a King Crimson ones, I actually place it chronologically inbetween Absent lovers (last 80's crimson live show) and Vrooom (beginning of the double trio)... simply impressive and magnificient music

  • Now that you've said that I think I will start doing the same! The muic is very crimsonesque.

  • Replace sylvian with belew and you have KC, but this sounds sooo different to Belew's KC.

I wish sylvian was in KC instead of belew.

  • Do not dare to wish such, not only does Belew contribute to the majestic rock vocal sounds which King Crimson in my opinion have never had before. He also contributes a mighty amount musical input which has turned KC into a more commercial success (such being his also quite respectable guitar skills).

    With kind regards.

    Igee Dieudonne De Montfort

  • We shall agree to mostly disagree.

I agree that Belwes is a fntastic guitarits, but with Robert Fripp in the band, who needs belew. True, fripp has lately started playing less grindingly and uses more hanging pretty cords, which contrast with Belew's shredding nicely, but I don't like most of his lyrics (apart for one time) and I don't like his voice too much, (although in TPTB it soundls kind of cool when he yells).

Imagine a sextet of Fripp, Levin, Belew, Harrison, Mastoletto and Sylvian! :)

  • I find Sylvian's vocals to narrow and utter impressionist. I must say I adore the expressive vocals Belew applies to KC and that combined in a sextet with the low monotone vocal parts Sylvian would be singing, even I find that vision a bit of a large contrast. I am not saying Sylvian is a disappointing vocalist, I am just saying that after the shortest bit of time he tends to bore me.

    With kind regards,

    Igee Dieudonne.

  • Bah, Belew is a fantastic singer. Best part of KC minus Fripp.

  • too much thought is not good for music. 1st hand experience.

  • I saw this tour, it was brilliant. I think Michael Brook was also in the band, although I didn't know it at the time.

  • fooking brilliant!

thanks for posting this vid!! :-)

  • pat and Trey were working with fripp- sylvian project and thats why they ended up playing in King crimson Right?, because Robert like the way they work.

  • No, Pat didn't play in the original Fripp/Sylvian lineup and if I recall right he just happened to pass the audition for the double trio audition when they were looking for a second drummer. When Pat played his audition he thought Fripp wasn't interested when he walked away, but in reality Fripp wanted to get a closer look of how Pat played and watched him from the behind. It was a real surprise for Pat to be a member, and he really is a fitting one!

  • Not sure though...

  • Nope, I have a Pat M interview podcast. He flew to london when he heard that Sylvian Fripp was auditioning, landed it, then later Fripp invited him to join the new KC line up. He also invited Trey on it.

  • is that pat mastellotto on drums?

  • yep

  • thanks, i saw Robert and David 14 years ago here in italy, Teatro Romolo Valli Reggio Emilia, but i don't remember if the drummer was Pat in that stuff. i think it was the same period of this concert

  • this song is kinda freaky when u listen to the words lol but still love this dude

  • i cant find tabs form "god saved my life" . :[

  • Get the Fripp/Sylvian album and the live album damage; both are a must have if you like this(my personal favorite.Dark, moody stuff mader before the Crimson double trio. Sylvain was offered the job but declined.

  • What is that wide necked instrument being played in the back?

  • a Chapman Stick

  • I think Trey Gunn prefers a 10-string Warr Guitar. Sticks are held a bit more upright, I think.

  • a Chapman stick...eh? I've never heard of one before much less seen one. So what is it a bass or rhythm instrument?

It kind of reminds me of the Japanese instrument called "Koto"...but the Koto is played in a horizontal position.

    Great video...btw

  • its both, you fret with both hands to create the note no strumming needed,so you can get wacky highs and rumbling bottom...few guys on here doing demo type stuff...

  • @thrakkattack-- War stick

  • @duncanstpt2 That's Trey Gunn and his Warr guitar.

    Get it? WARR? GUNN?

  • @JackBlair2 that's not a warr, that's a stick.

  • And Michael Brook on backing guitar is no slouch either. He basically invented the sustainer guitar that was then further developed and marketed by Fernandes.

  • Sorry i didn't specify.

    The drummer does.

  • fantastic as always

  • damn fuckin Fripp can play anything. He can shredd, rock ,blues, reggae, etc., etc, The guy's a fuckin'genius. Has anybody seen his interviews from 1980. The B&W one where he looks like Clark kent w/out the glasses. He's too smart to be in rock bands i luv him for that. I like how he plays guitar he never stands. He sits he looks pensive like he's calculating math problems.Does he know howto party or what? He never loses count/beat. i could learn alot from him.

  • Yes, you could, couldn't you?

  • @cellardoor199991 you just said everything that makes fripp who he is. if rock n' roll had a god....it'd be fripp.....the prophets; king crimson.

  • Beautiful song.

Love the rythm, but at 4:27 he goes off a bit... my mechanical ear doesn't miss a beat.

    eheh

Some music back then. Anything like this now?

  • just imagine what it would be like if a band came out today that made music like this...oh boy

  • I think that was intended

  • David Sylvian tapping (sort of)?! Now I've seen everyting :)

Lovely video btw, the two Sylvian/Fripp albums are among the best ever made.

  • AND how could I forget, the bass playing is nothing short of heavenly....fo sho

  • Just killer. Sylvian is stellar as per usual, and I always like Robert best when he keeps his yap shut, and just plays the geeeeetar like a god(haha)

  • ART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I dunno but it sure sounds awesome, as Sylvian

    (in all Japan/Collaborative projects) always

does. Nobody but nobody sounds better than my

    beloved DS. HE'S THE MAN.

  • What on heart is that instrument? The one that your man play? looks like a sitar... Could it be an electric sitar? am i gone too far?

  • chapman stick

  • you're kidding right? Adrian Belew is an integral part to King Crimson. Discipline was the first album I got by them and Elephant Talk and Discipline, Indisipline were just amazing.

  • this is amazing,i tried for ages to get this on dvd and finally got a copy from a source in italy, top quality and i jus adore david sylvian..the man is a living god..a true genius...these guys compliment each other so well

  • Besides, I don't think Sylvian was directing Fripp :)

  • I disagree if you consider 70s King Crimson.

  • I agree with your disagreement, Crimson in the 70's were untouchable, and I don't think anyone would be directing Fripp, I think it's pretty safe to say if anything Fripp had control over his own parts to a large extent.

  • fripp & sylvian, two brillant musicians. really good.

  • Sylvian needs to learn to project. He should listen to some Peter Gabriel live more often. Thats projecting your voice and being very subtle when needed. Peter is god. Fripp is the patron saint.

  • I think Sylvian projects just fine. Listen to some of the Japan recordings. He's very smooth, a-la Brian Ferry, but I think he competes very well with the other instruments. I love the juxtaposition of his stylish, smooth voice in front of all of the electric activity and rhythm.

  • needs a different beat, guitars were great

  • why can't you buy commercial DVDs of these concerts? Why does it have to be so friggin' difficult?

  • Good point accidentalfilms..drives me bonkers too...

  • damn, I am digging David's guitar stylings in this.

  • I remember this fabulous cocert in Paris !

They stand in front of me ,like Gods

  • sylvian with king crimson is like heaven, fripp and sylvian, both gods

  • Man, how does one go about getting King Crimson to join one's band?

  • First you'll have to track them down, there are dozens of 'em.

  • man, sylvian looks so devoted and serious. this song sounds so ironic.

  • David's voice sounds like some instrument...i dont know the name , but it is my fav instrument!!

  • sylvain's voice sounds like dave gahan

  • dont you mean dave gahan sounds like sylvian

  • Kind thanks

  • Sylvian's playing a Steinberger.

  • What is Sylvian playing - I can not see (thank the camera man)!?!

  • a headless guitar

  • Who chose to they cameraman with badly of Parkinson?

  • Shoot the camera man, can't we?

  • yes cost,je some serious money

  • Thank you - Love this track - hadn't seen this before.

  • Sylvian + medio KC. Casi nada...

  • Robert, David, Trey and Pat - if only the cameraman could have kept still!!!B

  • Yeah worse than Top of the pops ever used to be !

have editing equipment will play with it till death ! scene change, scene change, scene change, scene change ! Grrrr
