What's the deal with landing in farmers fields, are they ok with it or are you insured through a Gliding organisation to pay out if you damage any crops?
@AmboGuy That is the flap handle. Gliders have both positive flaps for thermalling and negative flaps for cruising. Looks like a lot of work always adjusting it but it becomes second nature and really helps the glider to fly to its highest performance. Bruno
@bviv Ahh ok thanks. I'm going to book up Gliding lessons soon so am after all the info I can get. I'll be doing it in London, UK so sadly won't get the stunning views you'll get Gliding in Utah!!
Very cool video! What software program do you use that takes the GPS (ADAHRS?) information and creates an animated video with aircraft model? I've never seen that before and it's real slick!
@LSVFlachkurbler I just watched your video and loved every second of it. Nice job on the lowest save I have seen so far on video! Yeah, that was low! :) Take care and fly safe. Bruno
I want to try this this summer. A few questions, please? What is that beeping thing in the background that sounds like a child playing a flute? Why are you wearing nasal O2? Pilots don't have to go on oxygen until 14K', right? What does the length of string on the windshield do for you? Thank You for making informative vids :-).
@neomuttley All good questions. The beeping is from the audio variometer. It tells you if you are going up or down without having to look inside the cockpit. Good for keeping your eyes outside. We get to 18,000 feet almost every flight in Utah. We use the O2 a lot! Since we don't have an engine pulling us forward through the air it is very easy to actually fly sideways which is not as efficient. It is called a yaw string and helps you see how to fly straight ahead. Hope this helps. Bruno
As a fellow glider pilot who's been away from it for 20 years and now returning, your videos are absolutely the best in so many ways - (1) the video itself, (2) your in-cockpit narratives of your thought processes, (3) the sound - thanks so much for not covering that up with music!, (4) that you let it run for moderate to long lengths, which 'feels' more like it does when flying and making decisions alone. Fabulous! Everyone who posts soaring videos could learn so much just by watching yours!
@saildapper2001 Thank you for taking the time to write the kind words. It really is fun sharing this amazing sport with others and watching how things progress over the years. Since this video was made my camera system is 10x better and hopefully flying skills are a little better but it is really fun to see flights from years ago still bring enjoyment to others. Thanks so much for the the message and it is time for you to get back into the cockpit and make some of your own videos! Bruno
What is that handle you keep fidgeting with using your left hand? I don't imagine those are the spoilers since you're trying to go up not down. Thanks.
@lucserre This is a flapped glider. Unlike airplanes gliders have both positive and negative flap settings. The positive flaps are for slow speed and landing and the negative flaps are for higher speed cruising. They really make a big difference in performance.
I once had a low save on a cross country flight in my hang glider. I was about 700 ft agl and was sinking pretty fast when I noticed several hundred crows in a thermal goin up like crazy I went from 5000 ft to 12000 ft in a very short time. It was the coolest thing in the world. I miss those days. Id love to fly sailplanes some day. great videos
Your video is the best incockpit glider video i've seen so far! You should have a PoLi battery brushless motor, the one we use in RC gliders to help just in case :D
@hallobaaaby :) Thanks for the kind comments! This video is no where near as good as some of my newer ones with better equipment. Please take a look at some of my most recent videos just posted in the last few days and see what you think. The motor would have been nice ;) Bruno
Hey, thanks for posting this video. I sold my 20 about 6 months ago and dropped out of gliding due to birth of first child (just not enough time for everything). Though watching videos doesn't replace flying, it does bring back a lot of great memories. I like your x-country documentary style. Could really feel the tension in the cockpit as you got lower and lower. Greatest thing of almost landing out is the awesome feeling of being able to pull away and make it home. Thanks again. Chris

Bruno - Awesome video! It appears your low save was very near to the location of my infamous manure field landout. So glad your day ended up better than mine! If you don't know the story, ask Tim or Dan W; Tim dug out and made it home and Dan came and got me.
Don't mean to be rude, but when you are so low thermals are not a mile wide. Try thermalling tighter and maybe you might stay in the middle of the therm!
Not rude at all. I was having some issues of my glider wanting to spin really easily when in higher bank angles so I was pretty easy on the banking. It turned out that I needed to replace the seals on the wings. Now that the problem is fixed, higher bank angles from now on. :) Bruno
If you didn't find the answer already, you've got it right. The instrument is called a variometer, or usually just vario. Some sound a little bit different but most sound like his.
I put up a page on my web site talking about the camera and mounts. There is a link to this page lower down on my home page. Youtube doesn't let me put web sites in these comments. My web site address is in the more info of this video.
U have a beautiful glider and a fun adventure flight. you were very close to land while you caught a thermal. what will you happened if you land your glider on a certain area that you are not familiar where you at. what next
Good question. I have a gps and paper maps so I pretty much know where I am at all times. I also carry a cell phone and have a satellite messenger device in case the phone doesn't get a signal. Worst case, make a camp fire and wait around until someone finds me ;)

Hi bviv,
love all of your videos and it inspired me also to install such a cam.
Just linked you another very low safe (350f AGL) from me, this is around minute 1 in that video.
