  • The sequencing of this following 'William's Last Words' is brilliant. "I am not dead, I know my rights" after what we take to be a suicide note.

  • The more I listen to this band, the more I regret not seeing them at the O2 in December.

  • This band have ment so much to me since 91, not onlky do i love thier music, when you read the lyrics and quotes on the album covers you then get interested in where they came from. The Manic Street Preachers taught me more thasn i ever learned in school,m if only school could have been dare i say sexy so learning was a buzz rather than a bore, sittin daydreaming, staring into space out the window, watching the time buy on the clock, the teacher droning on, the teacher from peanuts. MSP 4EVER

  • The intro is very much like archives of pain... First time I've heard this song, since I bought the deluxe edition on the day of release, and obviously it isn't on there :(

  • Very close to being their best song.

  • I think the Manics have felt pressure to create the next THB since EMG and have tried to recreate a new THB for some time. Along the way they have managed to make some brilliant stuff sporadically whatever people say and personally I think its all part of their journey. For me this track is the best they have done since THB since it encompasses the old and new in a way I did not think they could anymore. Great effects and lyrics. All the best for the ever changing Manics - Always facinating.

  • @Omnislash99999 There will never be another holy bible. I'm glad the mighty manics havnt tried to re-create it, it's perfect as is.

  • from italy:bellissima!

  • Amazing

  • I envy Richey everyday for not being able to express myself as brilliantly and easily as he seemed too.

  • i wish people would stop listening to radiohead and listen to manics; OK computer vs Bible? no competition

  • @happyman64issocool but its not a competition, its not a football match its just music

  • @flashmcnashos i know but sometimes u want the manics 2 get the respect they deserve ykno??

  • of course people are going to compare journal to bible its only natural; point being journal is almost as gud and is an gr8 album in its own right

  • Only a song like this could miss out on being on JFPL. Probably because it would have been a really really blatant single...

  • The last intelligent band left today. The Manics are just as important now as they were 20 years ago. This is what drives them on.

  • possibly my favourite song in journal for plague lovers!

  • could someone clear it up for me, is it "loves" written on paper and paper burns, or "laws" ?

  • I definitely hear echoes of The Holy Bible in this song, which is great. Wherever Mr. Edwards is I think he's hearing this with a smile.

  • If they were at their prime in the Holy Bible era this song just shows they can just turn it on when they want. (Musically)

  • The Manic have got a vast array of hidden tracks and b-sides that are vastly superior to a lot of their album material, they need to sort out their song selection policy

  • its a really shit feeling knowing that a band like these fuckin gods will never come around again, and from that im privillaged that the manics graced my ear drums and eye balls with songs, albums, lyrics, quotes, hairspray, and fuckin epic gigs that will never be replecated, only for lady gaga or some other cunt that couldnt play a tin whistle to gain all the attention singn about losing her keys..

  • Lads, take a bow,ya's are without a doubt the last important band standin, and still holding a middle finger to the world, and for that i thank you!

  • its not a suicide note blooregardo .. hes trying to exemplify figuratively, how much he wanted to be left alone.

  • "never let yourself out, i did it ruined me"....best verse on the song

  • @SaintJimmy2000

He may have wrote it about his leave from the Priory.

  • That's exactly what I think when I hear this song and think Richey Edwards.

  • @SaintJimmy2000 Well it was true the day he wrote it at least

  • Listen to 'William's Last Words'.

If that's not a suicide note, I don't know what is.

  • Bradfield said one of the reasons they left this song out of the album was because he felt it would be too gruelling to sing it every night on tour.

I totally understand what he means, Bag Lady is the one definite throw-back to The Holy Bible on this album; it's charged with things the band have left behind. Still, it's probably one of my favourites.

  • reminiscent of archives of pain at the beginning (a good thing)

  • Nicky has mentioned these lyrics by Richey that haven't been published yet:

    Diet Slaves

    Infancy Speed

Hollywood Quality Is The Original Asshole

  • The track begins at 7.00 or something after williams last words

  • what does it mean, "walk in half view of all mirrors?"

  • Could mean that you only see half of yourself; something in life has stolen your meaning and you are ashamed to see yr'self "It ruined me".

    Not you personally!

  • Only show the parts of yourself you want exposed? and i guess the "all" part means never fully show yourself to ANYONE.

just my take on it, because its Richey James, so i could be far off.

    god, what a lyricist . . .

  • Yh like the issues raised in Facing Page:Top Left, the whole idea of beauty and that some people wear less clothes to feel beautiful. To be observed.

  • @LeppardPrintAnimal like only letting people see half of yourself, the outside not the inside.

  • @beevisiontv

IMO, since a mirror is used to look at yourself, only accepting a part of yourself.

  • Thanks for uploading this :)

  • "A devil pretending to be a God"

Could show Richeys disdain to organised religion.

  • Or how he may have felt cheated by an idol of his.

  • The last important band. How to make intelligence sexy.

  • Wonder what is meant by the songs title?

Mite b looking too deep but.....

  • I love the lyric "Laws are written on paper and paper burns". We all seem to be held to this high standard of justice by our governments only to have it manipulated to suit their own ideologies. We all must create our own morality. Richey was a genuis.

  • Spot on I think - the pressures of being moral/ideological. The most corruptible people are the most ideological

  • It's chilling, this song. I know Richie's lyrics throughout their career often detail the various troubles he had with many things, but this seems to me, to be the only set he wrote that sums up his entire dilemma into one final admission of bitter resignation. The darkest thing they ever wrote in my view

  • its sad really; love them or hate them, you should just appreciate them because you'll never see another band like them .

  • This song is class...

  • why isn't this on the £20 version?!?!?!?! what a fucking rip off! how come we miss out on this! sooooo unfair! im in a right strop lol! since i paid the extra... i want that track!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • as far as im aware the track is free to download from the manics website. however i know it does suck that you don't have it on CD ='(

  • @PeeledApples I think the manics have certainly had all the respect they deserve, loyal fans forever and loads of them. What else can a band ask for. If anything they get too much respect because they are so hit and miss these days. Just my opinion.

  • ...it's a secret track starts playing after williams last words if you leave it long enough

  • @bekcs I bought the signed version and the 2 disc version. and this was on neither so now I have 3 copeis of this album D=

  • @bekcs Bag Lady appears on both the expanded and standard version of the album, but only as a hidden track (Track 14 to be exact).

  • Great track. Why was this not on the Duluxe edition? I am going to have to buy the normal cd aswell.

  • fucking brilliant

  • this should have made the album

  • .....it did...

    Hidden track...at the end.

  • I think a lot of the lyric's on this album do sum up richey's planned dissapearence. I may be wrong but there seem's to be plenty of clue's. Too clever to just commit suicide, look at lyric's in William's Last Word's and here on Bag Lady. Are they about him? or someone else? it's hard to get past that question mark...

  • Sorry about my spelling on here too! disappearence i think that's how it's spelt.

  • true

  • "I am not dead....."

  • it makes sense to me............

  • awesome

  • I know I commented about Richey's writing on the Plague Lovers track but I have to say again how fucking brilliant they are. As a writer of poetry myself I find Richey to be quite inspirational in my own work. Not that I want to copy him, because everyone should develop there own style, and Richey sure as hell did that. The music is the perfect complement to the lyrics as well.

  • the start reminds me of the intense humming of evil

  • Very melodic band. Although the sound is intentionally rough their melodic brilliance shines through.

  • Yes very melodic CornelisDonovan, are you a big fan of their's dude? oh someone think's i am richey manic on here!!

  • Jameyinegypt -I think you are Richey in disguise and you thought you could fool me!

  • If you go to the official Manics website you can download the mp3 of bag lady for free, as well as a remix. dont know if its limited time tho!

  • at brighton dome 3 days ago they didn't play this song which peeved me off quite a bit coz i would have loved to have heard it live.

  • Now available to download for free from the official Manic Street Preachers website, along with the free download of the (in my opinion, ever so slightly odd) remix.

  • ok, now we've established that its not on the special edition version, and that it sounds a bit like archives of pain, does anyone know what its about? cos I anit got a clue!

  • not a clue its a very cryptic song. It sounds as if Richey is tormented "it ruined me" and how everything seems fake "love's written on paper and paper burns"

  • yeah, I see what you mean. That would also tie in with the bit about a devil pretending to be a god. Maybe its about how disellusioned he is with life in general?

  • Probably about Richey, the first line is "I am not dead", is he talking about himself in reality ? could be. Maybe he will never be found.. but i think he is still alive living abroad somewhere..

  • "living abroad somewhere" god let him rest in peace for god's sake.

The song was written before he disappeared ffs!

  • Yes i know that, but he was such an intelligent human being he could of planned everything out before he vanished. So the line "I am not dead" could refer to him . And when william's last word's was written it gave the impression it was a suicide note, so on another lyric " I am not dead" it could be about him. Maybe i am looking to much into this.

  • Yes I think you are looking too deeply into it.

  • Yeah i know. the i am not dead bit freaked me out a bit when I first listened to the album, cos i didnt know the hidden track was there and I fell asleep to williams last words only to shaken awake by "I am not dead!"

  • Hands down the best song on the album, don't know why it wasn't a normal track instead of hidden...I guess they wanted to have you look for the best without just giving it to you

  • it wasnt a normal track because the manics wanted it to have yet another similarity with the holy bible (number of tracks), so to resolve this, they put it as a hidden track instead of a normal one.

  • Yeah I read that in an interview how they wanted symmetry and that's why they didn't include the song, but in my mind there are a couple of songs this could replace as I feel its much better than "Doors Closing Slowly". Definitely one of their best songs in years along with Pretension/Repulsion, All Is Vanity, Jackie Collins.., Peeled Apples, Journal For Plague Lovers, and She Bathed Herself In A Bath of Bleach. This album rocks

  • yeah, its immense and a shame it didnt get to number 1

  • For the book it is housed in? Photocopies of the original lyric sheets and some photos/drawings/paintings/etchings/collages of Richey's, all nicely presented? I know that's why I did, worth every penny too! Great tune by the way but doesn't come close to touching Archives Of Pain. That was then though and this is now, still a bloody good album.

  • Yeah, you're right I guess. The book is amazing, even better than I expected. They still could have slipped this track in though =(

  • i do not understand the comparison people make to the holy bible. The holy bible is history and as you said this is now. i just do not believe its fair to compare this album to the holy bible. Except for Richey, the manics still have everything from 20 years ago. when i saw them the other day, James sang "love's sweet exile" better than he did back at the generation terrorist era.

  • Why did I pay £18.99 for the special edition instead of the £9.99 for the normal version only to find it has a track missing? Love the new album though.

  • Comment removed

  • Too good to be just a hidden track.

  • anyone know why this isn't on the limited edition album?

  • For me I think this is actually the best song on the album, why didn't it make it onto the official tracklisting..?

  • I completely agree, am baffled as to why it was only made a hidden track

  • Apparently it was too close to the Holy Bible era n they didn't want to advertise it as such.

It was in one the interviews they gave for promotion of JFPL

  • Think it could have been the end track instead of Virginia state, but saying that I like the album as it is. Works.

  • Oh okay, thanks! Which interview was this? Do you have a link please?

  • Uh check the NME website. It was on there; I bought the issue it was on.

  • Lol, I've noticed no one wants the here the demo version of "Bag Lady"....

I agree with ya though, I blame those who pressed the disc; they prob left it off by accident or summat

  • otra pieza grande , recuerda archives of pain y al holy bible por completo, sin llegar a plagio apesar de su similitud es una belleza mas de los manics, que continuan haciendo musica que se queda para siempre*

  • pisses me off this aye on the deluxe edish

  • Lyrics are off Walk in half view of all mirrors It makes sense to me It makes sense to me Never let yourself out I did it ruined me It ruined me To be morally good Only rather to love A devil pretending to be a god Laws written on paper and paper burns Eternity is not sunrise
  • similar to archieves of pain

  • without the archives and the pain i suppose?

  • buy both like me

  • Oooh, nice. I definately like it. Had my heart set on the special edition, but I don't think I'll bother now. Why leave it off? It makes no sense... stupid Manics.

  • The start of this is so much like Archives of Pain from Holy Bible. Search for it here and tell me I'm right!

  • Was hoping this would be on special edition. Bit of a kick in the balls.

  • Yeah, pissed me off aswell.

  • Kind of glad I didn't buy the special edition now...

  • This is easily one of the best tracks off Journal For Plague Lovers... a hidden gem.

  • Don't stand so...don't stand so... don't stand so close to me?

  • Bag lady is on after williams last words.

if you look williams last words is like.. 10 minutes long.

Its on like around 7 minutes i think.

I wish it was a song on its own though! one of my favourites on the album.. i dont like it being on the end of williams last words haha!.

  • Yeah it's supposed to be a hidden track, but I downloaded the album and it wasn't there, which was a shame I was. Pretty dissapointed they haven't put it on the download version of the album

  • Where can i get the download for this?

  • In what way is it hidden, can anyone say? I want to make sure I hear it when I buy the album. And is it not on some of the versions - the comments have confused me somewhat!

  • ARRRRRRRRGH at this not being on the special edition. Paid extra just to hear Nicky mutilating 'Marlon JD'

  • The bastards didn't put this track on the special edition or the vinyl. That means loyal fans (read 'suckers') like me will have to buy the album for a third time. That's a total of £45 down the drain. I thought the manics were above crap like that.

  • Why is this a hidden track? It is awesome. BTW I'm an Aussie who waited for the 1 copy delivered to my local store. Feeling very disappointed because the Manics should be much bigger down here. This album exceeded my expectations :)

  • they should be much bigger up here as well. They never get enough airplay.

  • kinda reminds me of die in the summertime actually...that and archives of pain...fucking amazing tune this

  • thank god tunes like this can still be recorded fuck oasis

  • Got my special signed edition 2day its amazing

  • Got mine as well, is bag lady a special track on yours? not on mine. gutted.

  • Its not on special edition unfortunately.

  • viva la holy bible , despite every new manics album i cant help but go back to the holy bible to compare it , i suppose im looking for a comparison or to better it , but im still waiting , if richey is alive if he came back i think he would give the manics that long lost spark . but i still love the manics none the less they are much better than the pish thats new today , all these new bands over the past 3 years called "the ..............." the killers = class ,the rest pish

  • this song wouldnt be out of place on the holy bible, musically it is reminiscent of archives of pain, the lyrics on the other hand do not seem as sombre and dark as the holy bible.

  • Thanks for posting some of the harder to find songs from the album, I have now listened to all the tracks and can't wait until Monday when my pre-order comes through!

Posting songs on YouTube hasn't ruined the "1st listen experience" at all - without any singles released, no one has heard many of these songs anyway before now.

Those that have looked them up that may be new to the manics will surely find that they are a great band due to the quality of the songs on this album.

  • yep, i mean if people have a problem with listening to albums pre-release then there is absolutely no point in them deciding to look up the very thing they don't want to see, and then find it necessary to lecture me about it. =) they are an awesome band i just wanted to share it with the world.

  • Anyone else feeling shades of Archives Of Pain here?

Very Holy Bible this one. Christ, cannot wait for Monday.

  • Wow, this actually made me feel really excited! Looking forward to getting this album through the door soon.

  • What the shit are you talking about fool?

PeeledApples has done Youtube a great service by uploading this and the other vids.

Last thing we need here is a whiney twat complaining like a toddler about how something YOU LOOKED FOR ON YOUTUBE is actually there.

I doubt you have the moral highground in this, having stolen music from torrent sites yourself.

Grow some balls or even better, shut the fuck up.

  • *thumbs up*

  • and just to re-iterate what shrapnel said.

You searched for the new manic songs, why did you do that, im guessing (and its a bloody accurate guess) that you like to complain a lot and act like a unfit for human companionship craphound.

If you were in nazi germany i would send you to the death camps...

  • LMFAOO thats awesome

  • "I havnt listened to what you've put up, cause i dont want to in anyway ruin that 1st listen when it finally comes"

Indeed, what are you actually talking about?

I don't know what point you are trying to prove.

Are you bitching about the fact that PeeledApples has uploaded a track that you have not heard yet outside of youtube?

    Is that it?

In which case, don't search for things that you don't wanna hear yet, fucknut!

Let alone talk shit about the fact they're on here, shithead.

  • To PeeledApples:

Why? ld you not wait another week or so? This album is so important and i feel leaking it on here is maybe a bit inapropriate. If you had done so a week or two after its been released i might not have a problem with it, cause by that time all the people that have been wanting to hear it will have already done so...

  • well thats odd after the thousands of views i've had your the first person to decide that, wow...

  • Very Holy Bible.

Can't understand y this is a hidden track though...

  • I recall reading that the 13 tracks on the album, and the hidden track at the very end, are deliberate nods to In Utero.

  • I don't know why they made this a hidden track, it's awesome. Possibly my favourite on this album... and that's saying something! What an album!

  • I am not dead I demand I know my rights You cover illness with flowers and flowers die Walk in half view of all mirrors It makes sense to me Never let yourself out I did it ruined me To be morally good Only rather to love A devil pretending to be a god Laws written on paper and paper burns Eternity is not sunrise
  • Good track. Like the guitar.

  • not on the track list, is this from the album?

  • not sure. its he last song from what i know so if it isnt then its a hidden track, similar to send away the tigers and know your enemy with "Working Class Hero" and "We Are All Bourgeois Now" respectively.

  • nice one! hope it's in.

  • ye its after a while of silence in williams last words, phenomenal song tho.

  • yeah, you are rite. it is gonna be a hidden track

  • Liking this one best so far.

  • yeah this is my favourite as well, i love the bass in it

  • FUCK

  • holy moly!

  • yeah the bass in this song is very reminiscent of archives of pain.

  • It reminds me of archives of pain ..

Thanks for uploading this (: .. I said to myself that i could wait.. but i couldn't :L So i'm trying to download them.. then am going to buy the album next week.. but i cant wait hahaaa xo

  • haha yeah i think i am going to do the same, you should be able to find the whole album on youtube now, i purposefully uploaded the songs from the album that were not on youtube. It is an amazing album!

  • Tis awesome-o 9000

  • Very well said. i completely agree with youm im uploading more songs from this album right now so watch this space. If anyone has requests please message me :)

  • If this was a track on the Holy Bible it would not have been out of place. Lyrically astute and musically compelling. This is the Manic Street Preachers that I have craved for 15 years. Immense.
