To add a couple of details, Sweden is to this day the Second most successfull Greco Roman nation in history after Soviet. And the 7th most successfull in freestyle wrestling. So yeah there is good ground game.

He's young, he's got talent, but unless he excels by leaps and bounds like GSP did I don't really see him becoming champion. One thing I credit him for is realizing that Sweden lacks the technical ground instruction and moving his training to San Diego with Alliance MMA. Guys like Per Aklund and David Bielkeden didn't adapt and were exposed. Relative to nothern Europe, Sweden has good MMA but on a global scale they need to break out in order to be competitive.

@tankfritt1 Sweden was the most successful at Greco Roman in the early 1900's but in the last 50 years Russia and the former Soviet nations have taken over. Even if Gustaffson had world class greco skills he'd still be at a disadvantage against a good freestyle wrestler who is used to attacking below the waist. Good freestyle wrestlers like Phil Davis (collegiate), King Mo (collegiate and international), and Rashad Evans (collegiate) would give top-level greco guys problems.

@NOCDIB I would say you can find better MMA-adjusted ground game in america. You can find very high class wrestling in Sweden. Exept for freestyle wrestling that is. But look how well he performed against fill Davis for example, wrestlingwise. That was from training with Martin Lidberg and his likes.

Phil has himself said it was his toughest fight so far, and he could barely take Alex down, wich has been no problem in his other fights, Alex doesn't have a wrestling background, but he trained really hard for 3 months prior to this fight with some of Sweden's best wrestlers and performed fairly good.

Jon Jones switched his focus to Greco in college. As with all American high school students who wrestle he was brought up in the folkstyle/scholastic style which is basically freestyle with a different scoring system and match layout. Unlike other countries very rarely is an American wrestler brought up into Greco-Roman from the start.
