Terry and John Wensink were the only Bruins from the Cherry years who were anywhere capable of playing like men. The rest of those losers wouldn't have even made good Broad Street Bullies. (The very definition of hockey cowards who were all talk and no action.) Gillies was the better fighter but mad respect to Taz for never ever giving up.
@WatchVenusSpa The Flyers have had some of the best fighters and enforcers to ever step on the ice. Schultz, Dave Brown, Berube, McCarthy, Odjick, etc.... Even their skilled players beat people down (Lindros.)
This was the series that the Islanders had to pass in order to be Stanley Cup Champs. I rememeber the newspaper article in the Daily News and LI Press it said that pansty Islanders must play tougher hockey against the Bruins. The Bruins had a very tough team under Don Cherry fighthers like: Johnathan, Wesnick O'Reilly, Cashman, etc..
But Gilles had to step up (The article said Do Not wake up the sleeping Dragon that was Gilles) And he did wake them up.
I've watched 5 of their fights. Gilles 3 and O'Reilly 2. These were real men, real hockey players and both are considered to be toughest of all time. I'm an Islander fan, but I absolutely respect O'Reilly. The man was a warrior.
OReilly lost this fight and NEVER won a CUP. Part of it was Park and Ratelle just were NOT WINNERS. Today Im Conviced Gilles was THE BEST . F all the Candien teams and every body else.
Can't take anything away from Gillies when it came to throwing the fists; they were two tuff guys who would pound the piss out of each other. O'Rielly got the worst of this one but I've seen him many time pound Gillies to a pulp!
This had nothing to do with the 1980 play-off series between the Bruins n Islanders. They fought one time after in 80 or 81 and it was a regular season game.Correct me if i`m wrong.
gcdcjccc wot the fuck r u talkin about(Gillies would pound O'Reilly today)he couldn't pound him back then, wot makes u think it would be different now..
A friend of mine's father owned a hair salon in downtown Montreal. Among his clients were some prominent politicians, business people and pro athletes. Once the Bruins were in town for a game. There was a shot on TV of O'Reilly during a pause in the game, sporting a brand new stylish haircut, lol.
You were right the first time. They fought four times in the 80' playoffs, and this was not one of those fights. They fought twice in Game 2, once in Game 3, and one more (the O'Reilly kick) in Game 4. Secord fought Gillies in Game 5.
Actually, this fight didn't take place during the 1980 playoffs, or even the 79-80 season. Gillies has the "C" on his jersey and there is no 1980 Olympic Patch on the jersey.... therefore this fight probably took place during the 77-78 or 78 - 79 season, when Gillies was the captain.

Biggest myth in hockey! That Gillies won the fights vs O'Reilly in this series. O'Reilly pounded Gillies twice and lost once with one draw!

You Boston fans cling to your teams like a newborn monkey to his shit...don't have anything else going around him!

Leave it to a moron from Boston! Gillies and O'Rielly fought FIVE times (you do have that many fingers on one hand?) during the 1980 playoffs.
Read the comment from yesterday! I was correcting my original statement. WHO is the moron?
