  • Every space mission has built-in risks, but this is was a different situation. From all reports, this crew had no knowledge of wing damage to the shuttle. NASA, however was fully aware of the extent of the damage and knew very well there was a strong possibility that the craft would come apart on re-entry. Should they have informed the crew? Would you have wanted to know that you were going to die?

  • @Schwarzkald Heheh should i order you a place at some mental state hoóspital and do a lobotomy to u? I mean you seriously belive in ufos?

  • Challenger disaster was in January 1986.

  • If you notice on 0.53 and 0.54 two UFO fly very fast and they shot down the columbia shuttle, because the columbia shuttle was in a special operation in space where they capture UFO in film. I'm not surprise if the UFO also shot down the challenger.

  • USA JUST DECIDED IT WAS EASIER TO EXPEND THE LIVES OF THESE POOR PEOPLE. WEREN'T THESE GRADUATES, AND WASN'T THIS A 30 YEAR OLD SHUTTLE? Only white people like Rush Limbaugh. I had never heard of the dude until I saw his ugly face on CNN. My poor parents watch that shitty station.

  • FUCK AMERICA. FUCK RUSH LIMBAUGH, AND FUCK YOU STUPID, WHITE RACIST MOTHERFUCKERS. FUCK AMERICA

  • Boring voice. They should hire Rush Limbaugh.

  • brave people always making a great history.

Thank you for uploading this video.

  • LOL at all the people commenting on how they saw this like it was 40 years ago or something

  • @creativenameisnotava It happened in 2003. You're thinking of Challenger which was in 1984 I believe.

  • @coelkwsm I didn't mean the actual breaking apart of the craft, I meant the news coverage, and I was referring to the comments that made it sound like some really old historical event, considering most people who can use the internet were born before it happened.

  • 1:36 OMG ALIENS IT'S THEM THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!!! jk

  • "Columbia com check..." i think thats what scares me the most

  • "If we die, we want people to accept it. We're in a risky business, and we hope that if anything happens to us it will not delay the program. The conquest of space is worth the risk of life."-Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom

  • The last victims of the american space program. Is a sad moment.

  • Wadsworth constant does not apply

  • so close to home................

  • @Latengodesmesurada

    It's "fly," you moron.

  • @carlrs15 you are right kind sir.

  • @Latengodesmesurada too soon...

  • Real hero's!! More guts then I will ever have!! know the risks and do it anyway.

  • I remember that morning. Sickening to watch it live on TV.

  • This really pisses me off..they were so close to home

  • I did not know this?????????????

  • NASA = Needs Another Seven Astronauts!

  • I remember i was in elementary school when i watch how the Columbia blew up out of the sky in CNN. Alone with 9/11 and the Challenger it was the most tragic events in American history.

  • :(

  • At 4:10 is that the last contact with the shuttle? or is that someone else trying to reach them?

  • @tinaUNDAcova no its the last contact

  • @tinaUNDAcova yeah its the last contact thay had with colombia...

  • I cried

  • Unvail the Drone stuff. No people needed. with 40 years of development they have better stuff. It's just a ploy to keep corp. money at hand and running our economy not the president.

  • when did this happen?

  • @KerrCo1

    2003

  • @SHFT101 thx

  • @KerrCo1 February 1, 2003 a piece of it landed in our yard, we was going to keep it but two men showed up at our door days later asking if we had seen any space shuttle debris laying around our property. We thought about saying, "No" but they acted like they already knew we found something.. We never told anyone we did. A moment of silence passed by, then we grudgingly admitted to finding the toilet seat and that's no sick joke.. A toilet seat of all things!

  • @ArizonaChris96 omg that is sooo creepy

  • @ArizonaChris96 LOL what the fail

  • @ArizonaChris96 I know this is probably a stupid question, ARIZONAChris, but where did you live?

  • When the Columbia was in space, using the Canadarm (Big robot arm in the payload bay) they took pictures of the hole in the heat tiles and deemed it safe. However the camera quality wasn't enough to see how dangerous it was. On the Descent stage the friction as normal created a heat shield around the Orbiter. When the shield reached the hole the heat reached into the Orbiter's frame and melted the steel causing Columbia to collapse. That is what occured and how it happened. Remember them always.

  • @UltimateBeast17 Your wrong. The Canadian arm was not installed on this flight. When SpaceHabs are flown in the cargo bay, the arm doesnt fly to save weight. There were no pictures and you will never find one because they dont exist.

  • I was watching this video during the Atlantis landing when my friend asked me how it happened. So for those of you who are wondering when Columbia was on its Ascent stage at about T+ 3:00 there was a crack in the foam on the External Tank (big and orange). This crack led to a piece of the hard foam breaking off and putting a hole in the heat tiles. This is why it was destroyed on the descent because the heat wasn't enough to create a heat shield around Columbia. (Continued in next comment.)

  • @UltimateBeast17 You also comment on a hole in the tiles which is incorrect. The leading edge of the wing does not have tiles but is made of reinforced carbon-carbon (RCC) panels. These panels are hugh and form the leading edge of the wing along with keeping the heat from melting the aluminum structure underneath.

  • circa july 21 2011. the space shuttle has ended!

what is human next step into space?

  • The shuttle exploded over my house, rattling my windows and doors in Aledo, Texas. I saw sparkling bits of light streaming across the sky on my way to work, not knowing what it was. I put all the pieces together shortly thereafter and was stunned.

  • As stated by Bush: "These astronauts knew the dangers, and they faced them willingly, Knowing they had a high and noble purpose in life. "

  • @udamamma321 bush sucks lol

  • Perhaps the smartest thing he ever said. And he probably didn't even write it lol.

  • @udamamma321

    unlike Bush himself

  • As bush stated? You're just another dumb motherfucker. That would be a good statement if they knew about this before departing earth. stfu

  • @killarmy75 you really think they didnt know the danger of leaving the planet before they departed? -.- and im not defending bush (im not even from usa)

  • I've always thought there was a voice audible in one of the last bursts of static, but it's probably wishful thinking.

  • @BarryDennen12 There is something in the static... but for all I can tell its more than likely a competing signal interfering. It sounds female in my opinion. It is around 4:26 in this clip I think.

  • Along with 9/11. the Columbia disaster is something I so greatly want to forget, but can't. Never will, probably.

  • heroes too often die for humanity's sake....glorious, yet sad :(

  • We always think that WE The human race is the smartest thing in this universe. But we are not. We can't control live or death, luck or pain .. If we thing we could just leave the earth with a shuttle that has been made on earth YOU ARE WRONG! We can't we can try but there will be always something that they were not able to check on earth.. I'm crossing my fingers for the new Space craft that they will make...

  • I just downloaded and read the official NASA Columbia Shuttle Crew Survival Report (PDF). Watching this immediately after the report breaks, absolutely breaks, my heart. The shuttle program has been a magnificent accomplishment, but considering the age of the orbiters I cannot say I am sorry to see it reach its natural end - far later than originally projected when on the drawing board - unlike, tragically, the unnatural demise of two crews. Blessings for a timely good program ending.

  • I remember that day vividly, was so sad to hear this had happened, weeks afterwards a professor said a phrase that still sticks to me today, "Progress does not come without sacrifice, they died doing a service to human kind and its future and for that they will never be forgotten"

  • I've never seen this video and I just realized that after Columbia's last message, the static that you hear on the intercom is from Columbia breaking up....

  • @velocity90 Worse, actually. That's the antenna loosing lock (at the beginning of loss of control and breakup). The investigation board believes that after that happened, the astronauts were aware of the complete loss of hydraulic pressure. Pilot Willie McCool tried to restart the auxiliary power units because he knew that when they were starting up, they boosted hydraulic pressure by a bit. For some seconds, the astronauts knew they were in a dire situation as the vehicle broke up around them.

  • @roamingcroat

    thanks for clarifying that..

I read the CAIB report.. and they state that approx. 45 seconds later, the orbiter broke aprat. That 25 seconds prior to loss of cabin pressure, the crew had to have known that they weren't going to make it.

Even though they were already incapacitated, getting ejected into a Mach 15 shock wave is hard to imagine.. What saved Scott O'Grady was that the missle slowed his F-16 down considerably before he ejected.

  • @roamingcroat Hi roamingcroat.

According to the Columbia Crew Survival Investigation Report, the last radio contact was at 14:59:32, LOC occurred at 13:59:37, orbiter break up occurred at 14:00:18 . The static starts at 13 seconds after the crews last radio call, 6 seconds after loss of control.

  • I've never seen this video and I just realized that after Columbia's last message, the static that you hear on the intercom is from Columbia breaking up....

  • RIP. to the brave passaegers on the shuttle !!!

  • Man, doesnt seem that long ago... Here in DFW, Tx we had debris spread ALL OVER THE PLACE, there was a 'piece' of something from the shuttle that landed in my friends backyard about 5 blocks from my house, and that was WEIRD, then 'they' came to collect the evidence. I remember that debris was scattered EVERYWHERE, it was quite........Strange, knew it was NOT A STAR or fireworks.... Shitty day.

  • I was 5 years old when the Columbia disaster happend, living in North Texas. I thought it was a shooting star in the morning. My mothers cries corrected my assumption.

  • space is a dangerous frontier that we strive to overcome. nothing highlights this more so than this and the challenger disaster.

  • To me, it was the final straw that killed the willingness and desire by mostly all Americans to show the bravery, assume the risks, and the basic sense of adventure to further this country. This country was founded on those principles, but sad to say how the generations have lost it. Now they want to government to control and tell them what to do and to just sit in their house happy not going any further than their front yard.

  • my dad told me i would never forget the day this happend...still havent

  • I was ten years old when when 107 went down. I remember my dad telling me, " I love you buddy, you're watching history right now."

  • R.I.P Crew Members

  • That is the image we are seeing just now, on 7:29 on Nasa TV.

  • Its chilling to hear the static of the radio knowing at that time the shuttle was tumbling and breaking apart reading the entire accident report it highlights the events and timestamps they side slipped at M21 and disintegrated..Bless their souls and family

  • the crew was expendable to the managment team. we have a new shuttle its un-manned. and its airforce and not NASA. as far as im concerned the program should have ended right here.

  • Space travel amazes me, watching the launch just blows my mind. The astronauts were very intelligent people and knew the risks. Their courage is astounding and they lost their lives in the name of science, research and the thirst for adventure. They've seen something that only a select few will ever see and to them it was worth everything. They have all my respect.

  • 1:16 you can see "something" in the left up corner.

  • @Krissii17 Why would i be sarcastic, that would be disrespectful. I am guessing you dont know too much about NASA

  • Comment removed

  • @MrSouthphillyitalian That is a hateful and mean thing to say! So disrespectful!

  • The captains last words were, "when I get back, I'm gonna have me a big juicy...."

  • give the astronauts the same respect youd give to a marine in the middle east

  • @dtox12

No offenses to the Marines but I respect Astronauts far more than them. But then anyone who works in a field directly beneficial to mankind has my utmost respect be it the astronauts in space or the humble astronomer in his observatory

  • @dtox12 4real!!

  • @dtox12 Especially because most astronauts are military officers!

  • This video is going VIRAL FAST! This is the EXACT PROOF I needed to show how we are being invaded by space aliens.

  • I often watch NASA TV just to see what they're up to. If I would've watched this LIVE, I would've fainted :,( I hope Endeavor and Atlantis have safe voyages.

  • What the hell was that at 1:38?

  • @maninablackhat UFO? :-)

  • Those mission control guys keep some level heads.

  • well they should know what happend its not like there a rocket scientist......................

  • Post this comment on all Space Shuttle Columbia videos (except the ones who have commenting disabled), OK?

    The comment is:

May resurrect the dead and resurrect the space ship.

  • 15800 miles per hour.. i don't think a human being can realize how fast that is

  • @packergolfer4 Just look up, if you see the space station then you can see that its travelling fast. 17,000 mph, 5 miles a second, 1 full orbit in 90 minutes. Think humans can realize just how fast it is when it goes from horizon to horizon within a few minutes.

  • I was with the Medical Triage Team next to the runway at the Kennedy Space Center that day. We were waiting for Columbia to return & conclude mission STS-107. I've worked many launches & landings and this started out so routine. We know the exact second when an orbiter is going to touch the runway. So we waited for the twin sonic booms that precede each landing. And we waited. Finally someone asked what time it was and we saw the touchdown time had passed. I remember the cold chill I felt.

  • @LDDavis911 Sonic booms after landing Wow !

  • @aimhigh59

The twin sonic booms vibrate under my feet & through a concrete slab floor & used to rattle the windows, that is, until I replaced the single pane, jalousie & Miami windows in my house with double pane 130mph hurricane windows, lol. Now a 2x4 shot from a cannon @ 50 mph will not penetrate the windows (or so they say. Not tested personally yet, knock on wood)

  • @Zapppo My point was the sonic booms are prior to landing not after.

  • @aimhigh59

haha! sorry! I was bleary eyed & it was like, 5 am when I wrote that so, zing! missed that

BTW, I found an interesting report on the disaster during that all nighter googsearch

I was dismayed but not surprised, to see the private contractor investigation as to how & when the crew died, was much more concise than the Gov investigation

    Gov: history.nasa[dot]gov/columbia/columbiacrewsurvival[dot]pdf

    Private Contractor: brconline . com/pdf/columbia_crew_survival_investigation_report . pdf

  • @aimhigh59 also, I live close enough to see shuttle launches from my house, so

I just presumed that by the time I hear the sonic booms, the shuttle has already landed. That is why I didn't 'get' your sarcasm. : )

  • @Zapppo No sarcasm intended. The sonic booms are when the shuttle is still flying and they go below Mach 1 or about 750mph.

  • Even when you're expecting them, they're still freakish

    /watch?v=pbChnPzrxKY

  • @LDDavis911 thats sad im still a kid and i wanna be a astronaout thats why im so interested in space and stuff lyke that i read alot of boooks of space did u see the disaster live

  • @LDDavis911

    i was there too

  • @LDDavis911 My heart goes out to you, and everyone at KSC and JSC...even to this day. :'(

  • @LDDavis911, wow! You had that cold chill felt? Had you had a sunken feeling that Columbia was in trouble?

  • Very sad video :(

  • I was in the 4th grade when this happened. A few days afterward, our class drew memorial pictures in their memory.

  • Very sad. I came home from practice and just flipped on the tv....was shocked. Brought me back to being in 5th grade when we watched Challenger.

  • @I33tguy21 go fuck yourself with a cactus.

  • @Ieetguy21 Go fuck yourself with a cactus what kind of asshole makes a joke like that? Oh yeah you do. Once again go fuck yourself.

  • I just feel bad for their families who cannot go almost anywhere on the internet without having a chance of finding this ! How would u like that i would hate it

  • I just feel bad for their families who cannot go almost anywhere on the internet without having a chance of finding this ! How would u like that i would hate it

  • Atleast they were doing something they loved.

  • Its so sad thinking our very brightest and best lost their lives doing such excellent, worthy things , and yet us common idiots still go about our mundane and 'small' lives...

I wish a bunch of thugs and criminals were on that shuttle!

  • Horrible videos - the Columbia and Challenger disasters. There's something eerie about the contrast between the sterile, technical commentary from mission control, and the human tragedy element.

It is brave, intelligent and curious people who will lead the exploration of space. Disasters like this will inevitably happen from time to time, but we learn from our mistakes and minimise risks. There's a whole universe out there waiting to be discovered.

  • they knew the hole was in the wing throughout the whole mission. put that in your pipe and smoke it.

  • My God.

Only 12 minutes from home. I didn't actually realize that till now. That's beyond tragic.

I really feel for our space heroes when I revisit these kind of videos, especially when you know what's about to happen.

I saw this and the Challenger explosion on live TV long ago & was stunned senseless both times. Those and 911 had the same memorable effect on me in my lifetime. Too bad they're all tragedies. My folks say I saw the first moon landing too but sadly I was too young to remember it.

  • They died serving for humanity.

  • @KSliene they seem to be some of the only ones...

  • @KSliene What exactly did they do for humanity, looking back on it now?

  • @rybo30 They lost their lives.

  • @KSliene And what did that do for humanity?

  • @rybo30 Go fuck yourself and die. That'll serve humanity a GREAT deal

  • @rybo30

Ksliene You wouldn't be talking on a smart phone now

  • @rybo30 They performed more than 40 experiments including lung, heart, metabolism, bone growth studies and payloads including SPACEHAB-RDM, FREESTAR all of which enhanced science capability, provided the interface to the electrical systems, the payload power control and command and telementry capabilities. If you still would like to ask what did that do for humanity, You don't know what HUMANITY means.

  • @KSliene who were they serving? Oh you mean serving humanity.

  • @satori85 Yea.

  • @KSliene correction they died serving the U.S government so that America can put its ghetto flag on the moon

  • @sk1ller11 They weren't going to the moon, you heartless and superstitious moron.

  • Comment removed

  • @KSliene indeed, God bless them all.

  • @gordon1978911 and @brybry19871987 I appreciate you guys are killing the trolls, but seriously, learn how to spell. :P

  • then it's an accident mgt. screwed up :/ accidents happen. Maybe they were under pressure or scared. we just pray it doesn't happen again. ;)

  • And IF REALLY LISTENING ....... U CAN TELL THEY KNEW what was goin' on for at least 30 seconds ( 3:30 - 4:10 ) before the shuttle started to break apart & burn ..... SICK FEELING & Nothing anyone could have done ..... : (

  • AND " THIS " IS THE TYPE OF SHIT THAT HAPPENS ..... WHEN OUR EQUIPMENT IS BUILT & REFURBISHED - BY THE LOWEST BIDDER !!! .... " Feeling That Heat ? " is heard @ 3:34 sayin' to fellow astronaut ........ WE NEED MADE IN USA AGAIN PEOPLE !!

  • AND " THIS " IS THE TYPE OF SHIT THAT HAPPENS ..... WHEN OUR EQUIPMENT IS BUILT & REFURBISHED - BY THE LOWEST BIDDER !!!

  • I think someone needs to get rid of comments for this video so all the fighting needs to stop.

  • What is with the 5:36 video edit/skip?

  • This is a tragedy.. why are you arguing?

  • They knew it was damaged but you can tell by the cockpit footage that they underestimated how severely that damage would jeopardize the integrity of the craft. The cockpit video does not show people who know they are going to die. If you knew you were going to die, would you be concerned with putting on your gloves and doing suit integrity checks? I think not.

  • I like how both of the top voted comments lash out at stupid people leaving comments, but they're incapable of distinguishing "your" from "you're".

  • So many dumb people commenting.

  • listen to the song "the commander thinks aloud." Its is about the Columbia disaster.

  • Eeery.

  • It feels wrong to hit the "like" button on vids like these but I appreciate the upload and found it very interesting.

  • Gaah, almost forgot about this. I live just an hour from Dallas and pieces of the ship could be seen from my location, and one actually landed in my friend's yard, it's just so surreal. Really tragic, my prayers go out to the crew and their families.

  • remember seeing this in the paper :( RIP

  • What I don't fucking understand is the guy is talking like the fucking thing didn't explode in the sky and there still trying to "communicate".. All those high tech computers and nobody turns on fucking CNN? And I wonder why it happened in the first place..
