take that 1 step further: put the rocks in burlap or a pillow case- get a hammer or sledge and pulverize what you can. like you said find soft rocks. this way you have mineral dust to feed into the soil. great videos on no nonsense ways of living.
@donze52 the indians would take rocks they placed out in sun all day all long (or under a fire) and take them and put them under what they used for beds at nite...to keep themselves warm.....
I did a variation on that in my new garden last year.
I dug up the rocks (one third rocks, two thirds soil) sifted out the rocks, mixed compost into the soil. Then made rows of soil with rocks all around to feed the soil and keep the weeds down.
I watch another video on youtube, I believe it was a particular type of gardening a man came up with over in sweden.
Anyways, he didn't use the rocks for that purpose you mention, but he used small boulders as heat conductors. They kept the ground warmer, so the plants would grow better I believe. And he was able to grow pumpkins and other things out of season because of the way he had his system.
Man was a full time farmer. That was his thing. Not a jack of all trades like yourself.
rock do warm up, but better I have found is clear jogs of water, on both sides of a plant when frost is possible, or push comes to shove just cover them with buckets.
Another great one Mr.Bill! How right you are. I had a rock garden once but the only problem I had with it was that it was really really tough on my mower! Kept going through blades like crazey! Hahaha
My grandfather used to do the rock thing. Used to drive me crazy moving them. He had stuff planted everywhere. But grandmother's cooking was always worth it. As an adult I can see those who lived through the depression think differently than I do.
Hey im 19 and I really enjoy listening to your words of wisdom and your interesting anecdotes, hope to see more soon.
