Pedro lived long enough to see his grandson win a Screen Actors Guild award for his ensemble performance in the drug movie Traffic (as a gay sociopathic drug dealer in Tijuana), and two American Latino Media Arts Award for two other movies. He did not live long enough to see his grandson perform in the reboot of Star Trek in 2009.
Pedro GG was age 26 when he made his first TV appearance on "You Bet Your Life". He had been working in shows since the age of 7 and was completely illiterate and remained so for the rest of his life. He was married at age 17 and his wife was age 15. His impeccable timing got him comic relief roles in movies and TV for the rest of his life. He was born in a small town in Texas, and is (I believe) the first Mexican American on TV. He inspired other children like Cheech Marin and Cuba Gooding Jr.
I live in San Antonio and I showed this video to my father. He remembers seeing Mr. Gonzalez at the Alameda theater when he was younger. It brought back good memories of his youth. Can you tell me where Mr. Gonzalez is buried and if the family still has ties to San Antonio. Thanks!
From wikipedia:"John Wayne saw his appearance on the program and cast him as comic relief in a number of movies including Rio Bravo, The High and the Mighty and Hellfighters. He also made guest appearances in shows such as Gunsmoke and Wanted: Dead or Alive, as well as the Jerry Lewis film, Hook, Line & Sinker. Wayne also had Burt Kennedy write a TV series for Gonzalez-Gonzales that was never made."
