I love everyone of your videos without exception...You are one of the few chefs on Youtube who always has exactly what I'm searching for, and they are so well done ! Thank you so much for uploading your videos! Please, don't ever stop...and once again, Thank You!
PLEASE PLEASE RESPOND!!!!! I NEED YOUR HELP! I am making this recipe soon and we didnt find the cream of tartar at my Walmart, and i dont think we can go back. (i live in the USA.)
Do you know anything that can replace it? Perhaps baking soda? PLEASE REPLY
@VivaLaAbercrombie I'm sorry, there is no substitute. You may find Cream of Tartar has a different name in your part of the world. Try looking for Potassium hydrogen tartrate or Potassium bitartrate ;)
We have coconut ice in the uk... i am 51yrs old and leant how to make it from a pre second world war cookery book as a child.. you can also buy ready made coconut ice in seaside shops as gifts along with seaside rock and fudge etc.
As a British expat living in the USA, my wife made your recipe to try and assuage my coconut ice cravings! It turned out rather softer and more chewy than I expected, akin to macaroon texture. What would you recommend to make it the traditional British coconut ice texture, which is part-way between macaroon and something more brittle and crystalline? Perhaps reduce the proportion of condensed milk?
@Icecubegirl1997 u can use 1 1/2 cups white sugar and 1 12 ounce can of evaporated milk. Pour the sugar into the milk in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and allow to cool before using.
i cant find cream of tartar in my country is there something i could use instead of it please so i can use your recipe for a party this weekend. THanks
@heukolo According to your profile, you are from New Zealand. You should have no problem finding Cream of Tartar there. Try the baking aisle (near the bicarb soda) or ask if you can't find it ;)
@moazhmoazh Carnation Milk (Evaporated Milk) is milk with the water extracted. Condensed Milk is milk with sugar added to create a thick creamy syrup. They are not interchangeable ;)
I live in the US and I have never heard of this stuff. Being a lover of coconut and a lover of the chocolate bar Mounds, I think I am going to give this a try and cover it with chocolate. I bet it will be just as good as the chocolate bar Mounds! yummm
@nimarocks1 uugh, sorry mate, i was cranky and i just thought 'here we go another obvious comment' and snapped. got nothing against you though, thanks 4 not snapping back. :)
@roseface It does make sense, if the color soaks into the condensed milk, it will not soak into the coconut - therefor you will end up with pink with white bits ;)
I will use that one because I'm always looking for great idea's when I cook for my friends, I always try to have some thing unique when ever I have a dinner party so they don't eat the same thing over and over and over so I think I will try some nice coconut ice thanks for that one pot chef : D
If you want pure fresh vanilla, buy beans from Madagascar, Indonesia or Mexico. Place them in a covered jar half filled with sugar for three weeks to dry them so you can use the whole bean instead of just the seeds inside the pod. To make a powder of them, simply put a bean or two in a coffee grinder until finely ground. This will be a perfect substitute for the extract and essences that are cut with alcohol and other god knows what. Enjoy!
Vanilla essence is a by-product of petroleum and is extremely bad for you (kind of like how bubble gum is made of rubber) and I would suggest vanilla extract instead (even if it is more expensive)
@Nalenthi it depends on what country you are in because Vanilla Essence and Vanilla Extract can refer to different things but whatever the case is, the imitation flavoring is made from wood and not petroleum.
@Nalenthi All vanilla flavourings contain the chemical compound vanillin (–O–CH2CH3), the only difference is the source of this compound. With natural vanilla extracts, it comes from vanilla beans. With artificial flavourings, it comes from wood pulp. Both are completely safe... it's all about how much money you want to spend.
I think in Britain we have it as a sweet/ candy rather than a dessert but don't quote me on it as I'm not completely sure! Never had it before. Good Job! :)
I love coconut ice! I saw it when I went to austrailia and I'm mad now because I'm almost out and I wasn't sure what to do...now I can make my own! Thanks for this
We have this in the uk-I dye half of it pink and layer it on top to make pretty pink an6d white squares. I've never put cream of tartar in in though...maybe next time. I love coconut ice! Yum
great 1.. i usually do this minus the icing sugar, substituting with powdered milk instead, makes it less sweet and milky. And i make them into small balls, putting a dot of food colour with a match on the centre.. :)

Wouldn't it have been easier to add the food coloring to the sweetened condensed milk? The color would have been more even I think...
quoththeraven929 1 year ago
@quoththeraven929 No, the color will not distribute properly if you add it to the condensed milk ;)
OnePotChefShow 1 year ago
@OnePotChefShow that doesn't make sense. the color most definitely would distribute more evenly if you added it to the milk and blended it first.
roseface 9 months ago
@roseface It does make sense, if the color soaks into the condensed milk, it will not soak into the coconut - therefor you will end up with pink with white bits ;)
