  • is the tartar nessescary?

  • I love everyone of your videos without exception...You are one of the few chefs on Youtube who always has exactly what I'm searching for, and they are so well done ! Thank you so much for uploading your videos! Please, don't ever stop...and once again, Thank You!

  • @OnePotChef

Thank you so much for replying!! One more question- is it absoloutely necessry to the recipe?

  • @OnePotChef

PLEASE PLEASE RESPOND!!!!! I NEED YOUR HELP! I am making this recipe soon and we didnt find the cream of tartar at my Walmart, and i dont think we can go back. (i live in the USA.)

Do you know anything that can replace it? Perhaps baking soda? PLEASE REPLY

  • @VivaLaAbercrombie I'm sorry, there is no substitute. You may find Cream of Tartar has a different name in your part of the world. Try looking for Potassium hydrogen tartrate or Potassium bitartrate ;)

  • @VivaLaAbercrombie Yes, it's necessary, otherwise the mixture will stay sloppy ;)

  • I made recently coconut ice but mine was more liquidy (softer)any ideas why

  • You rock!!

  • how much is a cup??

  • @surfwax121 There is a link on my channel page for a measurement conversion chart ;)

  • @OnePotChefShow thanks :)

  • COCUNUT ICE !!! I EAT THIS ALOT YUMMY

  • heyyyyyyyyyyyyy good cooker wats up

  • I cant find Cream of Tartar here in India.. Any Other Option Plzz? Thanks In Advance

  • @011BSA same question. I can't find tartar here in india. they asked me what it is. :-/

  • NOT enough sugar 4 me

  • love the way he says "PINK" xD 4:13

  • cant you just color the milk then add? i seem it much easier

  • In the uk it is made in two layers... bottom layer is white and the top layer is pink.

  • We have coconut ice in the uk... i am 51yrs old and leant how to make it from a pre second world war cookery book as a child.. you can also buy ready made coconut ice in seaside shops as gifts along with seaside rock and fudge etc.

  • i cant find cream of tartar where i live what can i use instead ?

  • As a British expat living in the USA, my wife made your recipe to try and assuage my coconut ice cravings! It turned out rather softer and more chewy than I expected, akin to macaroon texture. What would you recommend to make it the traditional British coconut ice texture, which is part-way between macaroon and something more brittle and crystalline? Perhaps reduce the proportion of condensed milk?

  • Thanks so much! c: I'll be making this soon.

  • @OnePotChefShow Where I live we dont have any condensed milk, what can i use for substitute?

  • @Icecubegirl1997 Sadly, I don't know of any substitute for condensed milk :(

  • @Icecubegirl1997 u can use 1 1/2 cups white sugar and 1 12 ounce can of evaporated milk. Pour the sugar into the milk in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and allow to cool before using.

  • i cant find cream of tartar in my country is there something i could use instead of it please so i can use your recipe for a party this weekend. THanks

  • @heukolo According to your profile, you are from New Zealand. You should have no problem finding Cream of Tartar there. Try the baking aisle (near the bicarb soda) or ask if you can't find it ;)

  • @OnePotChefShow Thank you so much. I will check again.

  • you could chop it while soft in the baking tray then as it gets hard in the fridge u can just pop them out :)

  • its just coconut kendall mint cake

  • whats the different between recarnation milk and condensed ?

  • @moazhmoazh Carnation Milk (Evaporated Milk) is milk with the water extracted. Condensed Milk is milk with sugar added to create a thick creamy syrup. They are not interchangeable ;)

  • i love cocounut ice and im from england

  • wonderful and easy recipe man you are just great : )

  • dude, i love you!!! thank's to you i'm no longer pissed about not having an oven :) you have so many awesome no-baking-recipies :D thank you!!!

  • Old as he has chickenpox. You make it look so easy. Great video.

  • Looks so delicious. Yum!!!! I'm going to make some for my 8yr

  • I live in the US and I have never heard of this stuff. Being a lover of coconut and a lover of the chocolate bar Mounds, I think I am going to give this a try and cover it with chocolate. I bet it will be just as good as the chocolate bar Mounds! yummm

  • why did you cover the brand name of the cream of tartar?

  • @nimarocks1 I used to avoid showing brand names where possible, as it could be seen as an endorsement. These days, I don't care so much ;)

  • @OnePotChefShow oh okay thanks :)

  • why did you cover the brand name?

  • @nimarocks1 well why do you think??

  • @TRASHoftheTITANS bit rude you are !

  • @nimarocks1 uugh, sorry mate, i was cranky and i just thought 'here we go another obvious comment' and snapped. got nothing against you though, thanks 4 not snapping back. :)

  • @TRASHoftheTITANS oh no dont worry, these things happen, but i am only 10 years old lol i just really like davids videos!

  • @nimarocks1 really? i'm 11 and i like his recipes too :)

  • I love coconut ice. It's quite common in Scotland too, but here it's normally chocolate covered :)

  • Why not use a mixer, (MixMaster, etc.), with dough hooks?

  • @UTAOUB It's easier to distribute the food coloring by hand than with a mixer - plus less washing up :)

  • You're great! I like all your videos

  • Can you please come to Denmark, and cook for me :D - YUMMI !!!!

  • Marry me ?!!!

  • COCONUT ICE!!!!! nom nom nom!!

  • very nice, you sound like homer simpson @ 2:00

  • ilove the accent will try the potat0o bake and still finding some better dessert thanks for the video

  • Wouldn't it have been easier to add the food coloring to the sweetened condensed milk? The color would have been more even I think...

  • @quoththeraven929 No, the color will not distribute properly if you add it to the condensed milk ;)

  • @OnePotChefShow that doesn't make sense. the color most definitely would distribute more evenly if you added it to the milk and blended it first.

  • @roseface It does make sense, if the color soaks into the condensed milk, it will not soak into the coconut - therefor you will end up with pink with white bits ;)

  • my teeth say no, but my eyes say yes.

  • My teeth are corroding from watching that. LOL

  • Could I use a fresh juiced strawberry instead of food coloring? I don't trust food coloring.

  • @stxsloves I'm not sure the juice would have the same effect. You can find food colorings made from natural ingredients at your local supermarket ;)

  • I will use that one because I'm always looking for great idea's when I cook for my friends, I always try to have some thing unique when ever I have a dinner party so they don't eat the same thing over and over and over so I think I will try some nice coconut ice thanks for that one pot chef : D

  • If you want pure fresh vanilla, buy beans from Madagascar, Indonesia or Mexico. Place them in a covered jar half filled with sugar for three weeks to dry them so you can use the whole bean instead of just the seeds inside the pod. To make a powder of them, simply put a bean or two in a coffee grinder until finely ground. This will be a perfect substitute for the extract and essences that are cut with alcohol and other god knows what. Enjoy!

  • you're burning all calories just making it. looks a vary hard work =)

  • We have this in New Zealand Too :). I agree "what the hell" once in a while is a great treat.

  • I was just going to ask if you washed your hands but you answered it right after xD

  • Vanilla essence is a by-product of petroleum and is extremely bad for you (kind of like how bubble gum is made of rubber) and I would suggest vanilla extract instead (even if it is more expensive)

  • @Nalenthi Vanilla Essence is not made from petroleum, and bubble gum is not made of rubber. Both are urban myths ;)

  • @OnePotChefShow actually it is made of rubber..

  • @JarrodScooters No, in fact bubblegum is made from a tree called a "Rubber" tree. It is not truly rubber.

  • @JarrodScooters Made from the rubber tree like the man said, which is not the same as petroleum rubber

  • @Nalenthi it depends on what country you are in because Vanilla Essence and Vanilla Extract can refer to different things but whatever the case is, the imitation flavoring is made from wood and not petroleum.

  • @Nalenthi

lol, where do you live? :D

  • @Nalenthi All vanilla flavourings contain the chemical compound vanillin (–O–CH2CH3), the only difference is the source of this compound. With natural vanilla extracts, it comes from vanilla beans. With artificial flavourings, it comes from wood pulp. Both are completely safe... it's all about how much money you want to spend.

  • Is there any lactose-free version of this recipe?

  • maybe its better to put the color in the sweetned condensed milk and stirr it. Thats saves you a lot of effort when you put it in the mixture

  • YUM! We have a similar treat up here in Canada made with maple sugar, condensed milk and walnuts. Sooo good

  • Ohh, I like You! :)

    Great job.

  • i love coconut and condesed milk , so i am going to LOVE this recipe !

  • they have this in jamaica, little different though the coconut is shredded, its called grater cake

  • I think it needs more sugar.

  • when i first saw the title i thought its were u get coconut milk, put it in the ice cube tray thingys and shove it in the freezer ._.

  • So...It's like eating sugar?

  • Oh cool! We have a similar coconut sweet in India. :)

  • I don't like sweet, can I change some of the icing sugar with milk or something else? Great recipe :D

  • @franciskapuspadewi I do not recommend altering the ingredients of this recipe, as the results can be unpredictable ;)

  • @franciskapuspadewi how about cocoa powder to offset the sweetness? can't beat coconut and chocolate anyway. :)

  • I've heard of this and i live in australia ^.^

  • @lilchrissie1212 haha he said it was unknown OUTSIDE of Australia :P x

  • would evaporated milk work for this also??? its popular in the UK too. my mum always makes this and im craving it lol

  • @claychick No, evaporated milk is a totally different substance. You need to use condensed milk ;)

  • Next time you should mix the food coloring w/ the condensed milk beforehand so blending the color into the mixture won't be such a pain :)

  • I love how you don't use an electric mixer- it's hard to do, you have my respect Sir Strong Arm!

I love your videos, your recipes and your personality are great :)

  • we dont have cream of tater here... :/ wht if we dnt put tht

  • im in new zealand!!! ive been eating coconut ice since i was a kid!

  • the milk looks soo gross D: Like pale yellow snot but still good video

  • @Dingdogduck It's condensed milk - it's meant to be thick and yellow.

  • @Dingdogduck Drinking it straight, is pretty fuckin nice lol

  • @Dingdogduck Never heard of condensed milk? HAHA.

  • @Dingdogduck have you seriously never eatten condensed milk??

  • @deadnumber1 DUDE CONDENSED MILK IS YUMMY BUT.... WAT EVER... ;P

    SUB ME!!

  • not sure this is really at the last minute. more like the last 2 hours..? hehe this looks delicious.

  • I'm thinking putting the food colouring in when you put in the milk would be easier. Hopefully.

  • oooh yum... I can think of all sorts of fun variations for this recipe.... I love coconut.

  • hey chef =)

i made the same thing but without sugar ! just add more coconut..

and then i cut the dough to three parts and add different color on each..

then i make them like small balls.. really nice and colorful for parties :D

    (Excuse my english)

    have a nice day =)

  • We have this in the UK as a shop bought sweet like a nougat bar.

  • my diabetes is running and hiding right now

I won't take my insulin for a few days and then I'll make this so I won't die LOL

  • WHAT the HELL hahah :)

  • I think in Britain we have it as a sweet/ candy rather than a dessert but don't quote me on it as I'm not completely sure! Never had it before. Good Job! :)

  • i love you your so cute

  • what can i use besides coconut

  • ur the best chef out there..!! thank you for all ur recipe's !!!

  • I love coconut ice! I saw it when I went to austrailia and I'm mad now because I'm almost out and I wasn't sure what to do...now I can make my own! Thanks for this

  • Looks like Almond paste, hmmmm, could you add a hint of Almond extract in this?

  • We have this in the uk-I dye half of it pink and layer it on top to make pretty pink an6d white squares. I've never put cream of tartar in in though...maybe next time. I love coconut ice! Yum

  • could u use something else instead of cream of tartar...?

  • lol you have a nice commentating voice (Y)

you should try for a radio show... (unless i'm slow and you already have one)

  • I have made and bought coconut ice un the uk

  • great 1.. i usually do this minus the icing sugar, substituting with powdered milk instead, makes it less sweet and milky. And i make them into small balls, putting a dot of food colour with a match on the centre.. :)

  • Hey chef, can you do a recipe on Sago Pudding? Thanks! :)

  • omg i never had this but it looks suicidal yummyy my mouth is watery xD

  • I live in Wales and I know what Coconut Slices are :P I used to have them all the time. But you're right I don't think many people would. Thanks for posting :) 5*

  • good stuff

  • lol u add vanilla essence to almost every desert

  • nearly every dessert calls for vanilla essence (or here in the USA vanilla extract). read a cook book. :P

  • Amazing Recipe! In mexico we have this very same desert! We call it Alfajor de Coco ;) Thank you for showing me an even simpler way of making this wonderful dish! :)

  • You're an idiot... no offence.

    Captain Obvious gets BLOCKED.

  • great 1.. i usually do this minus the icing sugar, substituting with powdered milk instead, makes it less sweet and milky. And i make them into small balls, putting a dot of food colour with a match on the centre.. :)

  • @OnePotChefShow I bet that burn STILL needs aloe on it! (is talking about what you said to abcmanlee above)

  • @abcmanlee

he might be slightly overwieght but at least he is doing something useful on youtube, and not uploading videos of video games nobody watches .

    no offence

  • @abcmanlee i think u still offended him...sorry.........no offence :P

  • I'm in the UK and I've had coconut ice for as far as my parents can remember! It's really a nice treat, but you can find it in shops all over Europe.

  • One time, my friend pronounced "ice" into "ass"!

    btw... love your accents =D

  • once again you've hit the spot with a nutritious recipe thanks ,come on Dave i need some more ideas for over chrimbo

  • Crimbo cooking video going up in a few days ;)

  • I just ate the stuff, didn't know it was so hard to make :\

  • I *must* attempt this. So easy and delicious looking! It will go very well with Wednesdays' Shepard's Pie.

  • I was wondering why I couldn't get anything on Wikipedia - I was curious about the origins of coconut ice. I have been given some that is very smooth and creamy - not the gritty ICE that I was craving from my childhood (when the school fete felt like DISNEYLAND)! I remember this recipe but I'm chasing a coconut ice recipe made on liquid glucose. Can anyone help?

  • I LOVE U!

  • One of the most resourceful tube points ever!!! You rock!!!

  • Easy and good

  • No problem :)

    Glad you enjoyed it!

  • 5:18

  • hmm interesting, thanks for this Dave, it truly is an Australian recipie, I'm up here in Canada and have never heard of this in my entire life, it looks like it might be good though, so I'm gonna give it a try and see how we canucks like it lol.

  • I'm going to try this! You're so full of ideas. Please make a cookbook!!

    Connie

  • Yummo Dave as always :)

  • i havnt had this for ages but its GORGEOUS. mmmmmmmmm =]

  • I was surprised to see the colouring going in at the end. Wouldnt be easier to put it in before the coconut?

  • The colouring is much more even if added at the end. If you put it in before the coconut, it tends to look a little too rippled.

  • I need to make this right now haha -- thanks for the recipe!
