Awesome that you brought that hound dog along with ya...how well marked would you say the trail is? Could someone hypothetically hike the whole trail without a map?
One of my favorite videos! After reading countless, dog-negative and"leave your dog at home" comments on countless sites devoted to thru-hiking the AT, this video only confirms my belief that bringing my dog on my thru-hike will only enhance my experience, not detract from it. Love this video! Thanks for sharing!
This is amazing. As an aspiring AT through hiker, what is your best piece of advice? Is there any piece of gear that was vital (aside from the usual backpack, tent, food etc)? Was there something you found that you really enjoyed having? Thank you for posting this video - it is really well made and I can't wait to start hiking!
I am going in March 2013. I can't wait. Getting my ducks in a row right now. Getting Gear...training...learning...and making sure I am good. I know you can't really prepare for this...but you can be better prepared so it's not as hard. Glad you made it the whole way through. It's got to be such a great feeling of accomplishment. I mean what can't you conquer now. Great vid.
Great video...my son is preparing to depart 4/7/12 from the GA starting point. Other than ensuring he has his FSU ball cap, overall what would you recommend that he obtain/prepare for/etc.? Again….well done!
@svatz2112 My first thru (w/ dog) I used a 2 person. My second thru I used a 1.5 person. It was too small so I picked up a Black diamond Mega Lite, which is an open floored 4 season, 4 person tee pee (under 2lbs). When bugs were present I would pitch the BODY of an MSR Hubba Hubba under the Mega Lite (3.5lbs TOTAL). The Mega Lite was hard to beat, and I never found a better alternative for years. Consider the MSR Fling 2 person. A great long distance, w/ dog, single walled shelter.
I thoroughly enjoyed the video. I hiked sobo in '06/'07, but found myself reliving my hike in reverse while watching your images. It's amazing how special and significant places in the woods become to you. Your dog is adorable - you can tell he loves being on the trail. Oh, and Go Jackets! I loved seeing the GT hat and GPB's signature in the hiker log! Thanks for sharing your journey. ~Superstar
I've watched a few times now. Great songs. I plan to do the MD leg over a weekend this spring. Hope to take my dog, but he is a but older at 9 and I worry it will be too much for him. Did you encounter any terrain in MD that your dog could not handle? Thanks
Great video, Peoms prayers and promises by john denver is another great song to watch this video with. Watching you and your dog got me choked up man. Great vid. Thanks for taking time to post this.
Loved it immensly. I couldn't do a thru hike in my youth but Am hoping to tackle it in my retirement years. Godwilling I'll be healthy enough to do it. Until then I will spent my time doing smaller trips and thanking God that I am healthy enough to do them---------------Hikenhunter
Awesome video. I noticed that you changed out our Flash 65 about halfway through the hike. Did it fail on you? I'm just wondering because that is the pack I currently have and I saw Hover's (GA-ME 2011) female version fail twice during her thru. Thanks for the inspiration.
Hey, I've been thinking of doing this. How did your dog handle the trip? I've got a Golden Retriever about the same size, and was wondering how much your dog ate daily, and how much you carried at a time. Thanks if you you get the chance to respond.
this is definetly a personal that i have set on myself. based on your experience, is it better to start on maine and finish in georgia? or start in georgia and finish off in maine?.
It is a documentary award contender sir. Great job . Thank you for carrying both a camera and a camcorder for 2200 miles. I gave up my camcorder in a 550 miles trail. I hike trails with my dog( sheltie) and I know how challenging but rewrding is hiking with your beloved dog. Walking with a dog keep thru hikers mentally morestable than others. I carry my dogs food since he is not a good breed to carry any load and the realit is that dog pack limits dogs move substantially . I loved your dog
Love the George P. Burdell sign in hahaha. Classic. Go Jackets!!!!
P.S. I'm a 2nd year at gatech and I'm really interested in doing a thru hike this summer. I'm gonna try and get into contact with you sometime soon for some pointers.
Very nice video I took my great pyrenees mountain dog along with one of those packs he carried 20 to 25 pounds a day AND ALSO had the time of his life. DOGS like to have purpose, mine carried first aid supplies(fastest medic ever), and carried the water and food of a injured hikers backpack. The women honestly LOVED my dog for the 105 MILES i did with her group. I was a solo hiker with dog like yourself. I met many groups and they LOVED the idea of my puppy CONTRIBUTING. He carried his own food2
Dan, loved your video with Kooper, and also following your updates and photos posted on onahike.com. Your Hi-tech setup was fascinating, and has inspired some mods to my pack. I'm imagining that you were able to provision Kooper's pack with 5lb bags of chow when required.
Congratulations on a great hike, and greetings from Maine.
Bravo! There's nothing that can bring me to tears faster than a thru-hike vid featuring a man and his dog. Excellent job on this and congratulations on completing the AT. I'll get there...eventually. :)
Love this video. Watching it still brings tears to my eyes. What an incredible journey. (I thru-hiked in 2010, too, but I don't think we ever met.) ~ Zen
Among the best AT thru vids. Showed the great relationship between you and your dog and the beauty and trials of the trail. I"m thinking about taking my dog too. Any suggestions/tips? What did you do in the areas/parks where dogs aren't allowed? Thanks, mistervee123
@mistervee123 My parents picked him up while I hiked through the Smokies & Baxter State Park. There were some kennels listed in the guide books that will pickup/dropoff dogs for thru-hikers.
I have to admit, the best YouTube AT video I've seen. I watched every second of it. Makes me wish for the trail even more than normal. Good looking pooch you got there to, thanks.
Obi Wan this is BallHawk! You did an an AWESOME job on this video, very well done. The Katahdin shots were perfect, and who could forget the Knifes Edge? I just happened to find this video and I am very glad I did. I Hope you and Kooper are well. -Ball Hawk GA-ME 2010.
I love your vid. Well done. I loved the mix of video and still capture. Music is great. You captured pics of your Katadyn climb that I had never seen before. I so want to finish the AT., hopefully in 2 years. Keep on hikin. XOXO
thanks I really enjoy your video

Did you have your dog leashed most of the time on the trail or is it not a big deal?

@svatz2112 I NEVER leashed my dog. She hiked over 16,000 Appalachian Trail miles from Maine to Georgia without a leash EVER.
