I have now this 08-40 at my Strat and I should say that I was very surprised that it starts sounds better than when I'm using 10-52 or even 11-54 in standard E tuning. That's strange but true. Anyway I have to weak fingers for a thicker strings, but I love how the bass strings sounds full and warm in thicker sets :((
@TheKirkYates As the story goes he was until one day he met B B King and King ask him why he worked so hard at picking? Gibbons said every since then he's used light gauge.
Well one, I find thin strings tend to break a lot easier than thicker strings. Two, some people overbend when they have thin strings, three, This is just opinion but I think they sound a little bit better when thick.
Overbending: If you can't bend in tune on light strings, thicker strings won't solve your lack of finesse.
"Weaker" tone after putting lighter strings: Put your pickups higher and turn some knobs on your amp and guitar. Overall heavyness is not releated to string gauge. Iommy, Page and Gibbons are best examples. It's all about music. Thicker strings won't help your lack of composing skills.
But I do agree, that higher gauges might be usefull while playing jazz with small amouts of bend, while playing in dropped tunnings and while playing on clean settings, with low amounts of gain.
thing is Billy plays really light...REALLLY LIGHT...Although his amp settings are off the hook...Full Bass, High gain, Almost no treble.
Funny facts.

From my point of view:
Overbending: If you can't bend in tune on light strings, thicker strings won't solve your lack of finesse.
"Weaker" tone after putting lighter strings: Put your pickups higher and turn some knobs on your amp and guitar. Overall heavyness is not releated to string gauge. Iommy, Page and Gibbons are best examples. It's all about music. Thicker strings won't help your lack of composing skills.
