You don't really need to, it's not like the regular piano towhere you cross over with your thumb to do scales, you can do intire scales using your index finger and your ring finger.
@FleshMob as ermac said, for many things, you don't need to- but you certainly can. Playing well with all five fingers would let you cover a lot more range with one hand- much more than one hand could on a traditional piano layout in fact.

Can you use thumb when you play? Is it comfortable for thumb?
