  • Licensed show, I mean. >.<

  • That ain't the only game changed to be based on a licensed game overseas. Here, Puyo Pop was altered as Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. In this case, based on Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (which I love)...but for some reason, Sonic himself isn't in the game.

  • I payed £1 for this game at "the exchange", an I gotta say it was the best quid I ever spent

  • Now you've done it mate. I'm going to have to search out a copy of this game. :)

    STAY AWESOME! :)

  • @cessnaace I'd recommend it, the Monster World games are an awesome series, criminally overlooked.

  • @ScrewAttackEurope And I guess I'm one of the criminals, as I've never played any of these games. It looks awesome though. Appreciate you doing this video, even if I'm just now seeing it two years late. lol.

    STAY AWESOME mate! :)

  • is it just me our does the mecha dragon look a lot like gigan from the godzilla films

  • @darthnose1993 I wouldn't put it past them, A lot of video games have elements "borrowed" from Japanese sci-fi, pop culture. Like tell me Super Sonic, isn't ripped from Super Sayians from Dragonball Z.

  • I loved wounder boy 3 on the master system :-D

  • I actually just downloaded this from the Wii Shop Channel.

  • @PikachuColoredPichu1 Ooh, did you get the Master System or Turbografx version?

  • @ScrewAttackEurope I downloaded the Master System version. So far, I've escaped the castle, and am at town. Took me a while to figure out I have to hold up, not just tap up to enter doors.

  • @PikachuColoredPichu1 Ah yeah, old skool quirks. I think it's better in the long run, nothing more annoying that in a heated fight going into doors you had no intention of going in.

  • shit hot game

  • Eh, I'm one of those gamers who feels Wonder Boy in Monster World is the tops of the series.

  • Wait, platform-RPGs nonexistant? What about Super Paper Mario or Zelda II?

  • Mouse-Man, which gives you the ability to pee over everything and eat your own babies.

    That, and climb up walls.

  • Tell you what, there's still a few online sidescrolling RPGs, like the execrable grindfest Maple Story, and the enjoyable grindfest Dragonica.

  • Thanks for the video Larry! I wish I could get Dragon's Trap on the VC.:( oh well. At least there's other Monster World titles on there.:)

  • No problemmo ^_^

  • Actually I think it's on the VC now.

  • My favorite game bar none of the early nineties, and probably my favorite retro game of all time

  • how come your showing wez and larry retro corner from the uk

    just a wonder thats all

  • Sorry?

  • i mean it through me when i saw screw attack posting guru larry retro corner from x leauge tv shown in the uk

i know you guys are linked with the avgn and just wondered why you posted glrc and put that text on there explaining something about somemate

but the video quality is amazing which im pleased at

are you going to be posting wez and larry top 10 anytime soon

  • Oh, mainly as there's not archive of the Retro Corners, when Xleague went down, there'd be no other way to ever see them again. But also as I have a lot of American fans and they never saw them at all as Xleague only aired in Europe.

  • For some reason i can't post a comment so i'm going to comment on reply, thanks for posting, One of my fave game of all time and what first got me into RPG's apart from the Final Fantasy series i'm only interested in action RPG's. I want to play Wonderboy in Monster World for Megadrive as i've never played it. I know Platform RPG are almost non existant apart from paper Mario is there any other platform RPG's you know that are on the PS2/PS3 and mobile phones?..

  • @taga5000 Yeah, that's some sort of weird glitch on YouTube, I get that a lot, try refreshig the page or goign back to it a bit later on, works for me.

But you got Wonderboy in Monster World AND Monster World IV to play on the Mega Drive, both awesome games!

As for PS2, I think there's a Y's remake on the system, but no others come to mind to me ATM.

  • @ScrewAttackEurope I've got Wonderboy3 The Dragons Trap for MS, but never played Wonderboy in Monsterworld for the Megadrive, Played games on the Megadrive but never owned one :(

  • @taga5000 you should just get an emulator for your computer to play megadrive games! great alternate to owning them.

  • You still hear wrong :D

  • at 0:18 he sys the legend of Soda or I am wrong?

  • you're wrong :D

  • I still hear Soda :D

  • shouldn't young nasty man be the final boss? kekekeke

  • i lived in brazil and i loved watching monica as a kid

  • They're making a CG movie of it this year apparently.

  • that's cool also if anyone is wondering she is supposed to be holding a bunny and that's what she hits people with

  • Lol, must admit, I've never seen it. I wonder why they never exported the series?

Most cartoons are pretty much worldwide now.

  • Brazil isn't a really umm economic country..well think of it like this.. brazil is sorta like in recession most of the time and i think the daily income of an employee is 45$ or something. so there probably isn't enough money or something to export it. Also i moved to canada because it's better to raise a family or get a job unlike brazil

  • Alex Kidd was a amazing childhood memory of mine. It was one of my favourite games. Thats why i still have it.

  • Oh my god..

I was searching for the name of this game for a long (and I mean LONG) time :O

I played it once back then, I couldn't remember anything about it except that a boy turned into a dragon :(

Thanks Larry for clearing this out.

  • Glad to have been of service ^_^

  • I had this when i was a kid. I didn't understand much of it back then but i managed to get to the bird-man somehow. I wish i could go back in time and see myself playing it and ask myself questions about the game. I still play it now and then on my psp. =) Still a great game!

  • Another Wonder boy game has been released for the virtual console, I think it was the game featured in this video between 0:40-0:45. I actually thought it was the Dragon's trap for a minute but I found out it wasn't & I remembered that they've already released Dragon's curse already.

  • Interesting facts for sure. That is quite a rip off putting in that cheat to warp you to finish the game. Absolute crap that is and pointless.

  • Okay, clicking the link now

  • Looks like a fun game

  • are you sure about monster world being the answer to zelda 2 though? I thought the arcade game predated it. nice review anyway, I loved the way this game started.. and the rest of it.

  • Wonder Boy 1 is a completely different game to the Monster World series, if anything they were trying to capture Super MArio's fame with the original Wonder Boy.

  • Which is why I said Monster World (=Wonder Boy in Monster Land, was originally an arcade game). I own all the games in the series..

  • According to gamefaqs (not the most reliable source I know) MW1 predates Zelda 2 by a year.

  • Thanks ever so much for covering this game, I just checked it out, and it's bloody brilliant!

  • No problemmo!

  • I put in that we5t 0ne cheat, went to the end of the starting level and there was no door

    WTF?!

  • Loved that game as a kid!

  • this is my first ever video game, and wonder boy 2 :D

  • which version would you most recomend, the MS,GG, or the TG16?

  • I'd say the MS version as its the original, they rushed the other ports.

It also works with the FM sound chip that a lot of emulators er, emulate now, giving it a lot better sound.

  • i hope this game comes on to the VC.

  • It might and it might not considering the Turbografx/PC Engine is already on there.

  • The SMS is still on its way. FYI

  • This game never gets old :D

  • Its probably one of my all time favourites.

  • Was Dragon's Curse released over here in the UK? I thought that the TurboGrafx-16 wasn't "offically" released over here.

  • Dragon's Curse never came out here until it was released on the Virtual Console. The turbographx (called just that in the UK, no 16 part) was officially released here, they just released so few units and only through a few sellers, that noone actually noticed it had come out.

I've managed to pick up two UK Turbographx's over the years.

But they machine played US games anyway, no region lock out. That or no UK games were ever releases.

  • i got the game from the boot sale, i never thought i would find a game like this in a boot sale, i thought it would be on eBay for about 20-50 quid.

  • Wasn't the Sega Master System more popular in Europe than the NES? Why would Zelda be the first game that comes to mind then?

  • Because of Americans reminiscing about their past and constantly reminding us.

the NES was popular here too, no where near as popular as the Sega, but I can clearly remember seeing Zelda as a kid, it's gold cart and its massive price tag.

  • have you got a review of alex kids or can you make one

  • We do have one, it was one of the very first retro corners we did infact. Just not gotten round to putting it up yet.

  • My favourite SMS Game ever, thanks Larry, gonna check it out on revver.

  • Thanks bud :D

  • I had this on the gamegear!

  • haha a cheat to complete he game instantly lol

  • hey larry,u took me back 15 years with this vid, nice one.top vid once again.

  • Thanks bud, yeah its one of those games that I loved as a kid, just one of my memories I had, not one bestowed upon me by Americans harking on about how great the NES was.

  • this is on tv all the time

  • Good stuff, lad.

  • Cheers ^_^

  • I loved this game so much...

  • My friends older brother had this on the Master System and would never let us play it so we snuck in when he was out and had a go, we died ALOT but it was awesome!

  • Oh yeah, Theres a lot of places in the game where'll you'll have your arse handed to you unless you've got the right equipment to go there.

Something that drove me nuts as a kid with RPG's. Namely, Y's.

  • I still have this game on a Sega Game Gear :)

  • the original wonderboy was a total adventure island ripoff

  • Its the other way around. Westone made the game originally for Sega and then sold the game rights to Hudsonsoft, but they couldn't sell the character rights as Sega owned them.

So its technically not a rip off at all.

  • Why oh why are the titles in the Wonder Boy series so confusing? Great video anyways :o)

  • Hm, Dragon's Curse is a much more unstandable name than Dragon's Trap..

  • Revver FTW!

  • Platformer RPGs totally nonexistant? What about Castlevania: Symphony of the night, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow and other recent Castlevania titles?

  • are you a castlevania fanboy or something?

  • Nope, it's just that there are lots of castlevania games that fit into actio RPG/platformer RPG category. And I might be a fanboy of Castlevania, I really like the whole Action/RPG thing

  • well you just shat on his parade

  • Actually there are quite a few, especially on the classic systems. Such as the YS series, Zelda II, Faxanadu, Magician and a few others that aren't worth mentioning lol.

  • Dragon View is another example, though it's not a perfect 2D platformer (more like the Streets of Rage 2D), it has platformer elements + RPG elements + kickassery elements

  • I just love the rivalry between Sega and Nintendo :D. I can't say who's best though.

  • nintendo! indeed!

  • During this time;

Japan and North America had Nintendo

Europe (place's like the UK where I'm from) and Brazil had Sega

  • I think both Dragon's Curse and Monster World 3 are on the Virtual Console among others (including the first Wonder Boy & a few Adventure Island games). Man this game series' history is complex. Oh and I did watch on Revver!

  • Cheers! It's definitely a confusing series, especially when they start renaming other games "Adventure Island" in the series as well that have nothing to do with either game.

  • Hey right on man. Awesome review. I have beat this game. I always watch your videos on revver it seems they look better on there any how.

  • Youtube has crappy video compression to FLV, The resolution is double on Revver.

It means more bandwidth, but that's not as much as a problem as it was when Youtube was launched, and its also getting less and less acceptable now.

  • Can this game take me far away from the mucky muck man?

  • P.S.; I watched this on Revver, too. Just 'cause I like you.

  • Awesome, Larry! I never played the Master System version, but I did play Dragon's Curse on the PC Engine/Turbo Grafx 16, and it ruled.

I had no idea the first level was the final level from the previous game! That's just like in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, where the prologue stage was the final level of Dracula X: Rondo of Blood.

Next time, you should do a review of the original Wonder Boy! (Which would go on to inspire Hudson's amazing Adventure Island series)

  • Well Wonder Boy and Adventure are the exact same game, they're changed as Sega own the rights to the Wonder Boy name.

Thanks for the revver thang too dude, appreaciate it!

  • I watched on revver to help you get some munnies ;)

But I think I saw this before on Screwattack... Luckily this is good enough to watch multiple times.

  • It's a shame you're not on American T.V., I could see you on G4.

  • Well we've tried talking to G4 in the past but they won't even bother replying to our emails even.

I suppose we could try Spamming them or speaking to Adam Sessler, as Craig's a friend of his :D

  • I think G4 went a little down hill personally, but it's the "gaming channel" for T.V.

And you mean stuttering Craig right? he's pretty cool, like you! :D

And Remember, Blackmail ALWAYS works, I learned that a long time ago, and it would work for you I bet.

  • Yeah, Stuttering Craig :D

I'll have to dig up some dirt then, which won't be easy as they're covered in crap ATM.

  • LOL, good job, and good luck, it won't be to hard.

  • btw i watched it in revour

  • Awesome, thanks bud ^_^

  • sweet vid larry!

  • Fine, I'll go to rewer. But only because you guys rock!

  • :D Cheers!

  • *goes to Revver*

    Love you.

  • Thanks dude ^_-

  • I watched this on tv the over day...

  • They repeat the hell out of them on Xleague now.

  • u need some advertising to get up to 100k, subs may i suggest using the nerd?

  • I don't think the ammount of subs mean anything, the three people BELOW me on the top 20 comedians list all have less subscribers, less hits and less videos than me, yet they are all partners.

I've a feeling that Youtube don't like Screwattack, But it's not me, same thing happens with Ashens.

  • Youtube has favorites...Like the Irate Gamer! (I like the Irate Gamer, so don't spam me fan boys), there are people who deserve to be partners, like Bigal2k6, Nicotine alien (Armake) and Jedite1 just to name a few.

Don't take it personal if you're not a favorite Larry, it just means you aren't at that point yet.

  • I sincerely doubt i'll ever be then.

Armake refuses to have anything to do with Youtube now, (personally I can't blame him)

  • We can only hope you will be someday, maybe someday, I'll get a Camera and join the race!

I know his Ex-girlfriend closed his Armake account, but he's still uploading old videos on his new account, and I'm pretty sure he's going to do new reviews, it said on his "Resurection" vid.

But Armake has gotten taken hits from the Trolls and spammers, same thing happened to Lotusama and the Anime freaks.

Don't let them get to you though Mr. Bundy, Trolls have no lives.

  • ull be a partner eventaully (like the nerd) ur like exactly the same expect ur eurpene and hes amirican (and he has more subs)

  • The ability to pee over everything and eat your own babies. What more could you ask for? 5/5

  • so dis is gonna b on screwattack 2morrow den bahhh

  • It was on there a few weeks ago, I always upload GLRC videos to Revver first as they pay me and the fuckers at Youtube refuse to make me a partner.

  • nope, this has already been in screwattack. good job larry! Have a cookie, if you don't like cookies, how about some toast?

  • great stuff larry :)
