I absolutely love this scene. When I first came across it in the books I read it over and over. This is a perfect interpretation, almost word for word from the canon. Holmes can laugh! A lot of times people forget that. In fact, there are many more mentions of him laughing than most people would think, and this is one of my favorite examples.
But I always have wondered- why artificial kneecaps of all things?
@violingryffindor226 I think it might be a red herring -- when Holmes says he wanted to get a look at Vincent Spaulding's knees you may be meant to think of the kneecaps as opposed to tunneling!
@MagiciansForce no joke!! This series and the Cumberbatch series are really good at showing the little looks that Watson and Holmes pass between them which shows how close they really are.
I love how Watson's break down is set off by him and Holmes exchanging another look. And Holmes' little "Sh! SHH!" when Watson finally cracked makes it seem to me like he wanted to laugh too, but was just making more of an attempt to keep some control. xD An attempt which ultimately failed.
I absolutely adore this sequence. David Burke is so good, and oh so adorable. It's great to see Watson making a naughty breech of etiquette for a change. Those facial expressions are unbeatable. And that laugh is just splendid! ;-D
Oh God, this is too hilarious. I love how Watson is eventually just like "FUCK IT, LOOOOL" while Holmes tries his hardest not to break down and just fails.
Man I remember this story. Sure its a bit gittish of Holmes and Watson to find it a bit funny, but yeah, Mr Wilson's predicament was most unusual that you can't help BUT laugh.
Holmes shoots Watson a dirty look and then he ends up laughing to! 0:15 - 0:172:12 .... lol holmes is so funny when hes trying to shut up watson. hehe
I always loved that part in the original story. The very idea of Holmes and Watson, two very proper Victorian gentleman, laughing their heads off at a client is just so hilarious. I'm glad that Brett and Burke did such a great job in bringing the scene to life.
Hey I never noticed that before. Holmes getting Jaybez (srry for my spelling if i got it wrong) to stay, while Watson takes a few more moments to collect himself. :D
ROFL!! Holmes trying to stop Watson from laughing didn't work too well! LOL!!! THIS SCENE MAKES ME LAUGH REALLY REALLY HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!XD
For all the charm of Hardwicke's Watson, I still prefer Burke's as more youthful and fun, questioning, luring out answers for the audience. He gave light to Holmes' black moods, something that the solemner, more serious grandfather-veteran-y Hardwicke does not accomplish as well. (However, Hardwicke does have nice, expressive eyes).
oh my...this is truly a lovely scene!!! I love his little laugh after he sits down....and the way he gives a little hop in his chair....wonderfulness!

That look at 2:08, really says it all. Holmes was silently warning Watson not to laugh and Watson telling Holmes, "I don't care." :D

Holmes starts stroking the table to get a hold of himself, and Watson just sits there grinning. How can you not love em?

He thinks copying out the Encyclopedia is fun? Jeez, Wilson must be the most boring man on the planet.

@PunkyCactus Yeah, David Burke was great. So was Edwar Hardwicke. Both were the best Watsons I've ever seen. ;)
