@solidstick320 Because this movie is, basically, a remake of Akira Kirosawa's film "Yojimbou" right down to the filming style, only as a western. Sergio Leonne never got the rights to the movie and actually ended up getting sued by Mr. Kirosawa, who ended up getting 15% of the movie's profits. He wasn't too happy cause his intellectual property was stolen XD.
@SmilingJack100 Good answer. :D But you sorta suggested that Kurosawa didnt like these films. I would rather think that he did indeed like and respect the films however, he was angry more at the directors who didnt give him credit. I think that suing Leonne was a sort of 'last straw' thing.
I wonder if it was a question of shooting ethics at that time not to shoot someone in the face or the head....was the heart considered the absolute center of life? It's one of those compelling historical mysteries. In an episode of "Naked City" titled "The Five Fingers of Henri Tourelle", it was established that a shot to the heart left a person ten seconds to re-arrange a suicide to appear as a murder.
@theringodd : We saw "Bullitt" at a drive-in, and when Steve McQueen said "Bullshit" to Robert Vaughn, everybody was yelling and honking their horns--nobody was used to people cussing in a major feature-length film yet. I was born during a fabulous time in history. ;]
Great, great scene. Clint Eastwood is a great actor--and so is (or was) Gian Maria Volonte. His performances in "Fistful of Dollars" and "For a Few Dollars More" are defining points.
i love the duke but the trilogy are the best westerns ever. done and done. i want to learn to play trumpet like this, such beautiful music by Ennio Moricone
the only shit part of these movies is that every time they shoot, the bullet noise sounds like its richocheting off metal, even when they shoot people. it goes BAM--BOING! like it hit metal
man did you know that the fist full of dollars and for a few dollars more are not the first movie with man with no name collection the good the bad and the ugly was
@1Joshuanichols no actually a fistful of dollars was made in 1964, for a few dollars more was made in 1965, then the good the bad and the ugly was made in 1966
@youjustwastedmytime That was muuuuuuuch later. But nicely spotted. Done twice with the scene where Biff is watching the TV (a nicely placed Checkov's gun or foreshadowing take your pick) and then repeated in part there where Marty takes the alias Clint Eastwood using a slab of metal as a rudimentary breastplate to protect himself from gunfire at the end. A nice shout out to this film.
@GizmoHarper Where do you think the Red Dead games took the idea from? Clint also pulls that stunt in the begining of the movie, taking down 3 men in the blink of an eye. My mistake, 4 men.
When I saw 7:14 I thought it was gonna end up like scarface, then at 7:25 I just thought twice. Good Movie, first time looking into this movie. I'm gonna buy all of Eastwoods movies :D
By the way I'm 14. Cut me some slack because I wasn't around to see this.
What's interesting.. the main bad guy here (Gian Maria Volonté) also played Indio in For a Few Dollars More, and is dispatched by both Clint here, and Lee Van Cleef in the second film.. you almost get the feeling that Leone should've cast him as Tuco in Good, Bad & Ugly so he could've had some measure of revenge against the two for shooting him dead in the first two films of this trilogy.
best scen 1:14-1:30 , Clint standing cool wind and dust and red leaves flying everywhere, just like a picture of raffael or daVinci, beautiful scene, best western scene ever
The direction of this scene is breathtaking, from the moment the dust clears and we see Clint's figure in the distance. Nobody ever made Westerns like Sergio Leone.
You hear him shoot 6 times at the men, then he shoots the guy off the rope without reloading. Did he shoot 7 shots, or was there a repeat camera angle. Because in his intial shooting you can distinctly hear 6 shots at the group of men. Someone help me out here.
You're so full of shit. He's been seen at Eastlands .... got threw out for smoking in east stand toilets at half time .... he punched a few stewards out though who had united badges on
@quietearthMT Actually, more like we spent less on effects, but had good acting back in the day. This of course is wasted breath on the electronic retard generation.
@quietearthMT If you saw the movie, you'd know Ramon, while bragging about his marksmanship makes a point about having to aim for the heart if you want to kill a man, then he proceeds to shoot an old piece of armor multiple times right where the heart would be.
The real message is this: what your strength is is what your weakness. Ramon was so sure in his ways that he simply could not change. We have this in real life so often that people are so cocky that they simply can not change - sounds familiar? Just look at Obama - lol
@quietearthMT yeah well back then it wouldnt have sounded suspicious. pistols were, as everyone knows, much less accurate back then and up until the 1930s or so the idea of HEADSHOT was never really believed to be effective. aiming for the body was a much bigger target. again, im sure you know this, its common sense of course, but i figured ol clint deserved an explanation lol.
@quietearthMT understand what you mean, but you had to see the movie to know what Clint is aiming at. Ramone was superstitious, and he said things like "always aim for the heart" "shooting them in the heart is the only way to kill" and also "When a man with a rifle meets a man with a pistol, he's a dead man". Ramone wasn't about to back out of his superstitious beliefs in front of his men. Just watch the movie, it's good.
Yojimbo isn't a scene for scene remake of either, or it wouldn't be debated which it is inspired by, but it isn't like Kurosawa was completely original in his creation, he admits to having been inspired by The Glass Key (although Red Harvest's plot is closer). I've got nothing against Yojimbo, I just prefer the style of Fistful better.
It's no great cinema secret many westerns of this time were patterned after earlier japanese films. With no disrespect to the japanese, they could not have made the same film as a western. Would we denounce Yojimbo then if it was made AFTER this? Two cultures benefited from one idea with their own unique styles, look at it that way.
@Agundis1825 Not exactly correct, you're thinking of SPAGHETTI WESTERNS, which were influenced by Japanese samurai flicks. BUT! Kurosawa's Samurai films were in turn influenced by John Ford's Westerns. Sorry mate, L2history. ;)
