@ailsalouisesmiles its not so much power as it is adrenaline. Just as when people get into fights or fall or crash you dont initially feel the pain until your adrenaline comes down that is why those horses are able to get up and keep going as well as most love their jobs.

@anniehorselover Nope. The jockey has to be on the horse for official finishes. There's a great video on here somewhere of a jockey who fell out of the saddle, but hung onto the horse's neck like a bowtie until the finish, so the placing would still count!

I've seen horses myself that have broken both their front legs during a race and it's not a nice sight. But allways the concern is for the Jockeys, they are the first priority in a racetrack accident. But I just wan't to point out that you can't just quit this sport because of an accident like this when people die in others sports and they don't quit because of that.

@Kaliegrl67 I ride horses and about 80% of them are ex-racehorses. They are trained in polo and general riding and then are used to teach both children and adults. They are so sweet and are used until they get too old. Then they are put into a retirement home for horses. Before that they are much loved.

most horses who break legs ARE put down, but not all,
a horse that has broken its leg can still become a cart horse or a equestrian horse or some owners retire them and use them for breeding, racing isnt as cruel as people make out so settle down

@hollieandizzy Yes, they are. People take the ex-race horses and ship them to places like Canada and England in in-humane douple-decker trailers meant for smaller animals such as pigs. Where all animals are killed in in-humane ways. Horses and ponies, pregnants and drafts are shot in the head only once with a stun-gun. Then the horses are left alive and feel every painful minute, which to them feels like years, and by that point the horses just want everything to be over with and loose hope.

When I watch horse racing I usually see the jockeys behind just about the saddle where it should be.

if a rider falls from the horse and the horse wins it will be disqualify bc rider does have weight and the horse has to pass the winning post with the rider.
I hate how people say this is cruelty, when if there was no racing, most thoroughbred's would not serve a purpose. Many talked of the profound rage felt at their career success being dictated by ‘rides’ under them, & how bizarre and brutal mutilation fantasies constantly plagued their minds. Horses & women were being mentally confused. One even had a poster of his “hero” Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe above his bed.
We issued a report with graphic, clear warnings about this situation, but heard nothing back.

okay who ever said that horses go to slaughter if they do not win a race are morons take it from someone who had horses with my family that horses are not sent to slaughter for not wining. i had winners and losers and not one went to slaughter, most that we had came home to the farm. and one went to a loving family. to the one who said that their horse was afraid to be petted. do you ever think that gee maybe the horse was just mean? most horses I had off the track were well behaved.
There are way to many horses running in that field. I personally think that there shouldn't be more than ten horses in a race. There's a lot of things wrong with the racing industry, but I still think having less horses in a field would help with all of the crowding.
I appreciate the fact that this racing telecast showed the viewers exactly what happened in the accident. I was watching the 1/2 hour recap of the races for day at Gulfstream last week, and there as fall that took down several horses (I think it was four). All they did was list the horses as DNF. No replay, no explanation. I am not one of these people who seek the end of horse racing, but this hiding behind jargon and euphemisms is something I can't stand.
@flabarple They have left and right-handed races (counter-clockwise and clockwise) depending on the course. This is the practice in most of the major horse racing countries. America is unusual in that it runs all races in a standard left-handed route.

@Amely19589 yes me and my family currently have 5 racinghorses that's up running. So yes I know what your'e talking about. I've seen horses myself that have broken both their front legs during a race and it's not a nice sight. But allways the concern is for the Jockeys, they are the first priority in a racetrack accident. But I just wan't to point out that you can't just quit this sport because of an accident like this when people die in others sports and they don't quit because of that.

Yes I know it's animals but the Horses like to run instead of staying still in a stable or a paddock. It's nothing else than a lifestyle and an interest. You wouldn't say that football is an industry just because people can bet on wich team will win right? For you it might be a "industry" but for me it's something I love... And yes it's not hard to find accident footages so isn't car accidents, airplane crashes or violence neither.

@Kaliegrl67 I ride horses and about 80% of them are ex-racehorses. They are trained in polo and general riding and then are used to teach both children and adults. They are so sweet and are used until they get too old. Then they are put into a retirement home for horses. Before that they are much loved.

im an apprentice jockey in toowoomba, QLD (australia) and ive been working with hoses for a long time now,
most horses who break legs ARE put down, but not all,
a horse that has broken its leg can still become a cart horse or a equestrian horse or some owners retire them and use them for breeding, racing isnt as cruel as people make out so settle down

@hollieandizzy Yes, they are. People take the ex-race horses and ship them to places like Canada and England in in-humane douple-decker trailers meant for smaller animals such as pigs. Where all animals are killed in in-humane ways. Horses and ponies, pregnants and drafts are shot in the head only once with a stun-gun. Then the horses are left alive and feel every painful minute, which to them feels like years, and by that point the horses just want everything to be over with and loose hope.

@squirttle92 Umm the whole way around lol. Starting at 0:23 just look at the kockey in first place and then look at the rest. Most of them are waaaay to straight and waay to far away from the saddle. When I watch horse racing I usually see the jockeys behind just about the saddle where it should be.

I hate how people say this is cruelty, when if there was no racing, most thoroughbred's would not serve a purpose. Would you rather a horse have to gallop a half mile to a mile on average twice a month or sit in it's pasture and eventually be sent to the glue factory. Seriosly people? Think before you speak.

Recently I took part in a counselling programme for male professional jockeys in the UK.
Many talked of the profound rage felt at their career success being dictated by ‘rides’ under them, & how bizarre and brutal mutilation fantasies constantly plagued their minds. Horses & women were being mentally confused. One even had a poster of his “hero” Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe above his bed.
We issued a report with graphic, clear warnings about this situation, but heard nothing back.

okay who ever said that horses go to slaughter if they do not win a race are morons take it from someone who had horses with my family that horses are not sent to slaughter for not wining. i had winners and losers and not one went to slaughter, most that we had came home to the farm. and one went to a loving family. to the one who said that their horse was afraid to be petted. do you ever think that gee maybe the horse was just mean? most horses I had off the track were well behaved.

There are way to many horses running in that field. I personally think that there shouldn't be more than ten horses in a race. There's a lot of things wrong with the racing industry, but I still think having less horses in a field would help with all of the crowding.

I appreciate the fact that this racing telecast showed the viewers exactly what happened in the accident. I was watching the 1/2 hour recap of the races for day at Gulfstream last week, and there as fall that took down several horses (I think it was four). All they did was list the horses as DNF. No replay, no explanation. I am not one of these people who seek the end of horse racing, but this hiding behind jargon and euphemisms is something I can't stand.

@flabarple They have left and right-handed races (counter-clockwise and clockwise) depending on the course. This is the practice in most of the major horse racing countries. America is unusual in that it runs all races in a standard left-handed route.

I have been involved for years and have never known for any horses to be taken to this almighty slaughterhouse you seem to be referring to. The sport has rules not to be broken and frankly unwanted horses are sent to riding schools for disabled children or loving homes
