I was born and raised till i was 12 in saipan... I moved to new jersey for 4 years... Only 2 people (my closest friends) knows im from saipan... no one knows im a chamorro... hard to explain to them were im from.. so i just lie and lie say im from new jersey for 4 years... now they think im spanish, asian, or hawaiian.... im an embarrassment to my culture.
My grandfather fought in Saipan. He was telling my older brother one day when he and his buddy were checking for civilians in civilian houses, they found a whole platoon of japanese soldiers and his buddy shot them all down.
My dad was in the Navy. Landing Craft Infantry-Rocket. In other words, LCI-R. He rocketed the beaches and beyond before the Marines landed. His ship was the 462. They got close,,,real close, to do their job. Great video.
Chamorros and Refaluwasch, CNMI or Guahan...This is urgent! You need to watch "CNMI Descent for Self-Government & Indigenous Rights". I uploaded the videos. Spread to friends and families!
My Grandfather fought at Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa in the USMC. I try to ask him of his experiences there but he won't talk much about them.... Before his ship landed at Siapan a Japanese Kamikazi hit his ship. The head of the Kamikazi rolled across the deck and landed by his foot. He took the headband off the decapitated head and kicked it overboard. I have it framed. No Joke.
It's really hard to get those stories from the men who fought in the Pacific. That is not to discredit the men who fought in Europe, but every man I talked to who was in Europe will tell you damn near anything you want to know. But anyways, that is quite a story. Your grandfather was a good man. If he is still around tell him I said thank you.
The Herald community newpaper from Chicago Il records my uncle "Robert, M.M.3/c., lost his life aboard the USS Watts when it was struck by a Jap suicide plane on August 11, 1945. He had served 19 months in continuous service on the ocean but died aboard his ship." His brother (my father) had just returned home from Saipan when he got the news. They are now gone from this earth and are reunited in heaven. God Bless them always. Love, Daughter and Niece
jesus I never knew it was like that......more than 4 weeks of hardcore war....I see the reality of how it is and it's nothing like in the movies.........
Yeah, Yamamoto discouraged suicide attacks, since he knew he could reuse the men if they could survive. After he died many who believed in the suicide attacks encouraged it, which like you said became well renown in the Battle of the Phillippine sea.
Yes he survived, he died after the wars, on December 7th, 2001. He retired after his first tour in Vietnam, he didn't want to be there any more than he had too. Although, my dad told me how he had wished so bad he could rejoin the Corps and go to the Gulf in the 90's.
I don't know, maybe. He didn't talk much about it, I really don't know. He was an engineer in Vietnam and Infantryman in Korea and WWII. I think. The only things he ever told us was a story where he said that the Chosin Reservoir in Korea was the coldest place he could ever imagine. He also had one story about him driving a tractor and his CO got sniped but he had to keep driving the tractor while infantry looked for the sniper.
The war was lost for japan in 1942 at midway, stupid that they kept fighting, all it did was cause more death, from midway it was just a question of when. But that is what happens when insanity rules over reason. They believed that they were superior, so by some miracle they would defeat the us military that was commited to victory at any cost.
my uncle was in the 27th "new york infantry" divsion his unit the 27th qm co was abushed by the large bonzai attack they lost many of there men, his unit came to saipan with 128 men and cam out with 42....
Some of the footage shown isn't actually from the battle of Saipan ... for example, the kamikaze plane crashing into a U.S. warship happened later in the war. The Japanese did not employ kamikazes until the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944.
no they first used sucide planes in the battles for the coral sea and new britain (1942-1943), world war two magazine i think november issue has picture of a unexploded "baka plane"on new britain
