Back in the late 1990s, there was talk here in the U.S. about building the Gripen under license because it was such good value for the money. It's a great little plane that can get the job done with less maintenance/support than other 4th Gen. fighters.

Gripen is so much computer when the pilotes trying to fix and turn up the plane, the computer do it too and it turn to much ens crash...

The trick is: let go on the yoystick and let the computer fix it, but in panic...

Have the Swedes learned how to keep these pieces of crap in the air? I know of at least 3 Gripens that have crashed. Twice the pilot has managed to eject, don't know about the one that crashed just before landing. The U.S. and Russia can build real fighter planes, not Swedes.

Gripen is among the safest fighters in the world, there's plenty of videos of Russian and American aircrafts crashing as well.

And of the few Gripens that actually have crashed a couple of them were test flights before the aircraft entered service, and one was just a prototype.

And some of the other crashes have been due to pilot errors. And all pilots came out of it without any serious injuries.

Hungary participated in the Spring Flag exercise in Italy -07 with four Gripens. It was their first international exercise using the Gripen. Their weapons and tactics were very limited by Red force rules. They seldom had AWACS support, they weren't allowed to use their data links, AMRAAM's or jamming.

The red team i basically meant to die. Despite this handicap, the Hungarians still managed 10 kills including a Typhoon.

I wouldn't bet on that. All technological specification aside, the biggest allure of gripen is it doesn't come with any political strings as with any American weapon. On the other hand,the biggest allure of improved F16 is the perception that American weapon also carries closer relation with the US. Choosing which would depend as much on what the purchasers want out of the deal politically as on price and capabilities. For countries like Romania, F16 is definitely a better deal.

The latest updated versions of F-16 are arpox ass good and very simular to the JAS gripen, but the F-16 its much older. And this is why many countries are replacing them. The JAS gripen is a 4,5 gen. aircraft. The F-16 is a 4th gen. aircraft. And the F-35 is a 5th gen. aircraft. You can't compare the JAS gripen and the F-35, this is two diffrent jets. There are more simularities btw F-16 and JAS gripen, than JAS gripen and F-35.

I'm not saying that either is better, both for it's use.

You cant buy new F-16's. They are not in production anymore. When I was talking about the latest updates, its just updates too avionics and weapon systems and such, the aircraft is the same as in 1979. There has been 2 major updates of the RNOAF F-16's that I know about, but only weapon systems and stuff like that.

I think they have new wings also.

earliest version of gripen very close to latest version of f16s. Latest versions of gripen pawn any version of F16 in almost every way. F16, although good plane, decent cost, is outdated. Gripen has newest avionics, radar, etc. F16s got pawned by the gripens in mock dogfighting during Red Flag dogfights when US hosted Swedes there. They also pawned many F15s.

Advantages: Smaller, cheaper, lower operational & life cycle cost, easier to maintain, faster turn-around times, higher sortie & availibility rates, true austere dispersed STOL capabilities, better datalink capabilities & netcentricity, true open COTS architecture, better range (NG version), true workhorse jet

Disadvantages: Smaller, less payload, doesn't fly 65000ft for maximum AMRAAM energy release, lower supercruise performance, not as much of a bragging hangar queen (F-22 being the worst).

It's a double edged sword, a plane is only as good as it's pilot but the pilot can only do what his plane will allow him to. A rookie pilot in a Gripen can shoot down the best pilot in a Tucano. I know that's a stupid comparison but I'm just saying it's a mix of pilot skill and what the plane can do, I'm a huge fan of the Gripen and Sweden is my favouite Scandinavian country because of it but I can't see it taking down a Eurofighter majorpluraeng. Both because of pilot training and the aircraft.

yeah they were Swedish pilots. But the reason for them dominating (yes, look it up) in the FIRST Op Red Flag and good on the other red flags vs. the f-22 is because the plane is amazing. Put all pilots in a Phantom, Swedish pilots are dead.
