I'm an atheist, but I believe that allowing someone like Silverman to speak for atheists everywhere is wrong, as the man is quite clearly of limited intelligence. I'm generally against the militant atheism of insulting people based on their beliefs, I certainly don't think this billboard falls under that category. I ignore Christian billboards and murals, I ignore their religion invading many aspects of my life, have to put up with some people selling their faith door to door, yet this billboard is somehow offensive purely because it's recruiting in the opposite direction.

@quezcatol Hi the point is that humans are gullible. We are particularly susceptible to believeing what authority figures tell us when we are young children. There are sound evolutionary reasons for this. Millions of people do actually believe in Santa. This is a fact. They acquire this belief because people they trust tell them it is true, and there is a supporting infrastructure of representational graphics, discussion and even the actual Santa at a mall.
Kids then learn he isn't real, but they get the gifts anyway so it isn't so bad ha ha, the grownups don't continue to take it seriously, so they don't either, childhood innocence can be charming. However, religious myths are seen to be taken seriously so kids continue to do likewise. It's called childhood indoctrination. And some adults and all religions take advantage of that innocence. The scary thing for me is that the clergy KNOW that Noah's ark is a myth, but teach it as fact to children.

Second, as an atheist, I and most other atheists I know consider certainty a red herring. We can only respond to the evidence presented for god's existance, which is nil to none.

There are sound evolutionary reasons for this. Millions of people do actually believe in Santa. This is a fact. They acquire this belief because people they trust tell them it is true, and there is a supporting infrastructure of representational graphics, discussion and even the actual Santa at a mall.

Kids then learn he isn't real, but they get the gifts anyway so it isn't so bad ha ha, the grownups don't continue to take it seriously, so they don't either, childhood innocence can be charming. However, religious myths are seen to be taken seriously so kids continue to do likewise. It's called childhood indoctrination. And some adults and all religions take advantage of that innocence. The scary thing for me is that the clergy KNOW that Noah's ark is a myth, but teach it as fact to children.

@gulbirk First, Silverman was not claiming certainty on the existence of god or Santa Claus. His certainty is that Christianity, the religion, is as false as the belief in Santa and backs it up.
Second, as an atheist, I and most other atheists I know consider certainty a red herring. We can only respond to the evidence presented for god's existance, which is nil to none.

Yet, if you were open minded enough to take into account for one minute that your conception of god is far from the Jewish conception of God, you'd understand why you're asking the wrong questions. Know is experiential. That's one form of evidence for the True God. Yet, there are others. Biological teleology is quite convincing, as is modern physics. Yet, you won't know why due to your misconceptions
