"Tradition some hundred years old"...it's a bit more than that.
Shakuhachi has roots that go as far back as 1477, however it was not until around 1603-1867 the Edo period did it come to be what we see and hear now today. This is a nice performance though, I love the sound of a good player.
hoy! i also play that instrument but only with the sound of my mouth + human beatbox style check my page thanks !! also master i just love your music it's a honnor for me to be one of creator for a new style in the world ! domo haligato tadashi san !

OMG @ 1:12 seconds look at the bottom left of the video, theres something in the reflection of the mirror it looks like a native american indian w\ 1 eye and no mouth, mad freaky
it's just a close up from another angle showing someone from some culture sitting down on a bench behind him... um can't quite see how you couldn't make it out if you watched past 2 minutes.
you use your tongue... almost like rolling an "R" in some languages, if you know what I mean. I can do it on my Native American flutes, but not a Shak... not yet.
He uses his lips and tongue. You press your tongue down between the up and lower parts of your mouth and as air flows over it you get that sound. It's really hard to do!

I'm not that good on rim blown flutes yet.

there's also a technique that you can use for a softer fluttering techniq that requires the uvula. I use it on my ocarina.

Simply beautiful. Is this improv?
swishkris99 2 years ago
This is not improvisation! Everything is notated in an old musical language and is part of a tradition some hundred years old.
DolfRabus 2 years ago 6
You simply couldn't write all the little flutterings down. but you could learn certain ways from a traditional Master. And you wouldn't choose this
type of music. if you weren't allowed to improvise.

@DolfRabus Any Idea were I can get books (in english or german) on eastern musical language ?
Since Glass I want to learn from the eastern ideas, I just love those areas of tones which western music seems to avoid so much.
