  • this music gives me the willies... now i just want a sword, a beach and a neck to slice =)

    serious now, simply beautiful.

  • "Tradition some hundred years old"...it's a bit more than that.

Shakuhachi has roots that go as far back as 1477, however it was not until around 1603-1867 the Edo period did it come to be what we see and hear now today. This is a nice performance though, I love the sound of a good player.

  • with-u great in-tensity

  • it's just a close up from another angle showing someone from some culture sitting down on a bench behind him... um can't quite see how you couldn't make it out if you watched past 2 minutes.

  • This guy has the spirit of wind flowing through him...

  • I love the sound of Shakuhachi Flute, it makes me feel happy

  • @paladinlol it makes me feel calm!

  • Awesome, I've got a CD by Tajima, never get sick of it.

  • How does he flutter whilst playing?

  • you use your tongue... almost like rolling an "R" in some languages, if you know what I mean. I can do it on my Native American flutes, but not a Shak... not yet.

I'm not that good on rim blown flutes yet.

  • there's also a technique that you can use for a softer fluttering techniq that requires the uvula. I use it on my ocarina.

  • He uses his lips and tongue. You press your tongue down between the up and lower parts of your mouth and as air flows over it you get that sound. It's really hard to do!

  • Simply beautiful. Is this improv?

  • This is not improvisation! Everything is notated in an old musical language and is part of a tradition some hundred years old.

  • You simply couldn't write all the little flutterings down. but you could learn certain ways from a traditional Master. And you wouldn't choose this

type of music. if you weren't allowed to improvise.

  • @DolfRabus Segments of this music (what you hear at 1:40 and 1:50 and 2:09) were used in the TV series Cosmos, written and hosted by Carl Sagan in 1980-81.

  • @DolfRabus

cool.. not that improvising would be a bad idea with such a wonderful instrument :)

  • @DolfRabus Any Idea were I can get books (in english or german) on eastern musical language ?

Since Glass I want to learn from the eastern ideas, I just love those areas of tones which western music seems to avoid so much.

  • @swishkris99

May be this is a part of a piece called "tsuru no sugomori"

  • Incredible artistry! I Love this Japanese flute!

  • What about the magnificent music in this video?!?!?

  • Pls, READ: Musica Sacra International, Dreifaltigkeitskirche Kaufbeuren...

  • wow u r really good how do u get it 2 vibrate like that? anyway, cool!

  • He uses his tongue in a "rolling your R's" kinda way, I assume.
