I love this early stuff; this album and especially Peng! Then they got all dot and loopy, and lost me. For some strange reason, their early stuff kinda reminds me of The Velvet Underground (can't explain why, though).
This was the song that turned me on to them. On Much Music and I wasn't really paying attention, and suddenly I noticed the music and vocals. Their sound is so unique all the way around. They go a little too 'artsy' for me. And when Mary died, I just couldn't listen to them anymore for some reason? But they were (and are) still a damn good band!
i saw them when the opened for Unrest (not the shitty metal band) at the Pontiac Grille in Philly. Ms. Sadier was transcendent that night, and although I am not a true fan, they won me over for that hour.
I feel very honored to have heard about Stereolab 2 summers ago, while also realizing I was as fast a fan of them as I was with Clinic and The Dears. I'm working my way around their discography. But meanwhile, Stereolab always have a place in my heart.
Thanks for posting this -- this also was the track that helped me really get into the groop. Like many of you their rock stuff is what did it for me. Is this track easier to get ahold of these days? I seem to recall it wasn't on an album.
God ! Laetitia !!!! Don't look at us like that !! Or marry me !! lol Beautiful singer, beautiful song, most beautiful band of this 50 last years !!!! Stereolab has always pull the rest of the pop music behind them !!!
I've had "Transient Random Noise-Bursts" on heavy rotation lately -- it's awesome.
I like the 'Lab's krautrock phase best. They really "inhabit" this style -- it is exactly what they want to express. Later albums use different styles (electronica, bossa nova, etc.) but sometimes appear to be playing with them ironically.
"Crest," "Jenny Ondioline," "Pack Yr Romantic Mind," are not just interesting and ironic, but also passionate, urgent. That's the difference. Best 'Lab album.
This is a sort of tribute to metronomic rockers Neu! I love Stereolab's uplifting guitar trance, especially when it's paired with often contrasting dark lyrics. This one is almost entirely hopeful, however.
Who knew htat the riff Iplayed before I even heard of this track was turned into something trippy by Stereolab? "Jenny Ondioline" is as impressive as "French Disko".
/sigh Even though their talents shine no matter what they do. I sure loved it when they explored the possibilities of just basic rock music, they made it something much more than what was common.
@miniGMgoit I agree. From here on it was downhill all the way, albeit down a shallow slope.
The metronomic magnificence of this, though.....and other tracks from the same time, especially on Peng! 'Perversion' on that album was great, which someone would upload it.
If only the sound quality was better. I love this song. Great that you uploaded it anyway. Thanks :)

I've just seen a higher quality, color version of this song. Although the sound is better, I love this black and white look. It's so French.

R.I.P Mary Hansen.
Seeing Stereolab perform when Mary was still alive was one of the greatest gigs I've ever attended.

I loved it when Stereolab were good and noisy like this...these days everything they do sounds like cocktail jazz.

Yeah just think if they would of stuck with this route, we would have so many great songs.

SHe's probably creating heavenly good music up there as we speak. I hope.

It's like an odyssey, man. A frickin' Anglo-French krautrock odyssey.
Seriously, though: masterful long track, highlight of what is probably the 'Lab's best disc.
