Frank Ghery during his time and even up to now is surrounded with controversy with regards to his works. That is because he is known to be inventive and irreverent, he was named the "Deconstructivist" Architect. Just like Antoni Gaudi he is just observing freedom of expression. Lots of people may not love his works but in the world of architecture... our world.. his works is a masterpiece. I love his works they extraordinary!!!
@edavidramos your completely wrong. its great advice actually. Its about believing in yourself, being yourself (physically and in your architecture) and doing what you love. if everybody had this honesty in what they do this world would be a much better place.
What surroundings?! Have you seen the miserable part of LA in which he built the concert hall? Same thing for Bilbao - his architecture is about redefinition!
@holamellamanloco Not only that, but have you seen the "under construction" photos of Disney Hall - it's a completely ridiculous skeleton scantly related to its skin. I think "post-modern" art is symptomatic of a cultural decline. Our religions are crumbling and rather than invest in new foundations, we collectively celebrate incoherence. There is definite engineering skill in making curved structures, but what is the meaning of it?
Frank Gehry is the Bernie Madoff of Architecture. Not a fan. Never was. He speaks b.s. extremely well. He designs b.s. even better. But, more power to him. He is the man of the times.

oh yeah..that's right my brother, be yourself..now thats came from my favorite architect of all time, his work is just different than the other, unique just like the other architect zaha hadid
the best architect of all times....alot of stupid unartisitc idiots are jealous of him and his architectural success...i hope he designs a building here in dallas, tx
@WoordWerks If you know anything about him, you'll know that his recognition didn't come from a desire for it or a personal effort to achieve it. From what I've learned about him, fame is the last thing that would motivate him. He was an outcast for a long time before anyone accepted his work as good architecture and he's a good architect. I went to Bilbao and it is unbelievable! The building doesn't take away from the art, i don't care what anyone says.
He just makes anything, puts it anywhere and waits for the praise of the people to fuel his master ego. He's like Britney in music. No real architecture critic (if there are any left at all) will ever say his work is quality architecture. Even Bilbao isn't good architecture. It's architectural acupuncture of an old ugly industrial town which is great, but the architecture itself is nothing.
@sansewai - Do you disagree through your 'conditioned student years given as what is aesthetically accepted for the mass market', or do you despise such a man, simply because he had the backing of Philip Johnson?
Gehry was 'blinkered' in his early approach, yet REBELLED AGAINST JOHNSON, a formidable Powerhouse, & a product of the Bauhaus.
I saw Gehry designing his first home, for his family. The neighbours had Yachts left proud standing in an area hundreds of miles away from the closest lake
@121Bollox HE WANTED TO 'FIT IN'! So designed, and commisioned sails on his roof! DAILY, local residents, would drive by and shoot at his home! He claimed that the 'extra lead' had increased the price of his property! Classic Frank Gehry
The man has the coviction or a Tiger, and the balls of an elephant! Young, up-and-coming architects... take note?
'Over-rated architect', maybe. Man of Principle... definitely!
@121Bollox None of the above actually. He made stuff and he'll continue to make stuff his way no matter what anybody says so it's pointless to have silly little arguments about his work. It's my personal opinion when I call it utter garbage. I think his work is ugly, as unprofessional as that sounds, and that's that. It's just ugly.
Good advice from an overrated "architect". The fact that you're a starchitect today doesn't make you a good architect. In the past they used to be great innovative thinkers that studied the climates they were building in and built with respect to the surrounding cultural/natural landscapes.
For the people who dont know who AYND RAND was or is,she wrote "El Manantial",which talks about the life of 2 architects...its a MASTERPIECE and this info is just for those who have guts... who seek for TRUTH during there lifetime.
I agree with Gehry but I have reservations about advising anyone to worry about software. That's later.
What any young arch student should do as much and as often as possible is touching a real live pencil, dragging it over real live paper and learning to LOVE drawing!
You will love architecture one way or another if you can develop a love for drawing. I'm an architect and it's taken me 30 years to learn that the only true love of architecture is the love of art. Everything else is just work.
@jugheadebay This is a good advise for me that I am studying architecture now. Thank you for posting your own opinion about it!!!! It is very helpful. :)))))
...this is true,in the end the satisfaction is achieved when one is contented because that is what he/she wanted to become, and that is why hes doing everything his/her own way,..
Yes, I truly believe in his view. Architecture almost seems dictatorial in its teaching of the students. We can learn from the past certainly and architects must consider the social and environmental context and consequence of their intent in everyway possible because that is what architecture is essentially about, but you can't tell a designer, a creator, how to solve a problem by laying out a sequential process like a math question.
@nikweinstein This person is either over confident or the absolute expert in their field. Who is this person today? Rem Koolhaus? Frank? there must be some Architect that has superior intellectual ability and general knowledge in the field of architecture and successful in demarcating the most elegant and meaningfull architecture for the 21st century. I retract my earlier comment in the sense that i disagree with a person who can. because there must be one.
I've experience a lecturer who forced his designs on his student. He FORCED me to build his ideas and do his designs without supporting or helping me further develop my designs. Lecturers like these deserves a kick up their ass. I went on with my own design anyway. He gave me a C for it. Well, at least I'm proud to say that I designed it for me and not for him. Gehry's right! Just Be Yourself. You've gotta learn to listen. But the decision is yours.
That is truly a shame, a professor should never do that, although I must admit, those professors make GREAT reviewers. I had a review with someone like that, and he was very anal about why I did things certain ways, questioned EVERYTHING, practically told me what I "should" have done, but it really pushed the project further and helped solidify my ideas. Sometimes in defending your idea, you learn what it is really about... They don't make good teachers, but boy do they make great critiques...
pqueolrac the process in which architecture is being teached in schools(mine also) is medieval because teachers(?) try to pass their ideas into the design of their students as you said! so do what you think is right to you, develop your own thinking about architecture and dont care if they try to limit you!thats what i do and trust me its much more interesting and creaetive than try to understand what the teacher wants you to do!
I learned that the hard way back in my 3rd year. My studio lecturer was a preacher. I hated his work and resisted his thinking at almost every turn, my best work resulted from that. I think it's possible to not like a building but still respect it for its architectural integrity. The Jewish Muesum for example, we are not supposed to like it, but it's great design for what it is intended to be.
wat frank gehry said doesnt apply to everybody. lyk me, during my second year in this course, i got low grade in my design because my design doesnt apply to the bldg's character. its quite frustrating wen teachers limits you in creating your own design. someday ill prove my teacher wrong.
This is great. You should also try getting into a woodworking class. Those skills will be valuable later when building models.
Now that you are taking a drafting class, you are now eligible for academic software at reduced prices. For example, it'll cost $400 for Autocad vs. $3000. If you can buy and learn it, you will get a nice head start for the coop and college. The drafting teacher may have more information. If you have questions send me a note.
I first heard about Frank Gehry from my visual art teacher in gr9, and I began to consider architecture because I love design and I don`t really have trouble with math when I try. But I looked into it and I was discouraged by warnings about the negative parts of the careers. Now I`m in grade 10 and I have to choose courses for grade 11 so I have tyo figure out if I want to do it or if there`s anything else that would work for me. I really need to know more about this career, help anyone..plz msg
pliz dont take architecture or u will regret...unless,u are obsesses in this courses.i'm a student in a fourth years.study in architecture.u can trust me.
Just get more sleep, things will not seem so bad tomorrow. Trust ME! If you made it to 4th year you must have something about you. You passed the point of no return, just grit your teeth and go all out. Never look back.
There's a reason why you are drawn to it so you should probably do some exploring. Gehry was discouraged from pursuing architecture, but he stuck with it. He felt he was being discriminated against because of his heritage. Don't let people tell you what you can do or not do. This is your life, not theirs. I am an architect. Some days are good and some are bad, real bad, but I can't see myself doing anything else. It is a tough profession. You have to love it to make it work.
Yeah the thing is, I can't find anything else that I'm really interested in. I'm going into grade 11 next year and I'm taking an arch. design course, hopefully that will help me understand the career.
Try getting a job in architecture or construction during the summer. You can learn a lot by shadowing other people. It may not pay much, but you can find out if there's any real interest. Before going out for a job try downloading google sketchup and learning it. A lot of architecture firms use sketchup. Above all, be positive. Initiative and attitude means a lot in this business.
