It was the Loon Foon when I was there in 1970. At other times it was called the Mandarin House. By whatever name, it was where I learned to use chopsticks, a skill I value to this day.
Loon Phoons was the name of the restaurant at Long Binh. It's been a while, so my spelling may be off, but that's how it was pronounced. Peace Brother & Welcome Home.
Most of the time I was stationed at Phu Loi and would go down for lunch at the Chinese restaurant at Long Binh. In November or December, 1969, I joined Long Binh Square and Compass Club. I'm a life member, but could only go the one time.
Vietnam and US is like an old marriage, you can't live with it but you can't live without it either. Us is back in Vietnam of this 21 century to fight the same evil communist force, China.
Great video..... I was there Aug 68-69 with the 29th General Support Group. It was across from LBJail... like someone below said....it was one of the better places to be if you HAD to be there.
@MeanMrMustard9 So was I !!! HHC, SP&O office, clerked and drove for MSgt Woodward and LtCol Carlson. My name is Nick...... whats yours? We had to know each other. I got there Aug 8 1968 and left Aug 6 1969.
@xios2000 I think I remember you Nick, I worked in Supply & Services section - one hooch past SP&O - for LTC Van Camp and SGM Williams. I was the guy that worked all night in S&S preparing briefing materials for the morning briefing. I had opposite duty hours - 5pm to 7 am -than just about everyone so I was usually sleeping all day while everyone else was working, and working when everyone else was off. I got to the 29th about 12 Aug 68, my name is Kyle.
@MeanMrMustard9@MeanMrMustard9 -- I also think I remember you.... were you kinda wavy blond hair, 5'10ish? I also worked odd hours because I had to take the OD out to inspect the guard bunkers on the perimeter everyy night at 12-1 am,, so I didn't have to go in to work until around 1....unless I had to drive LTC Carlson to Saigon or Bien Hoa. .
@MeanMrMustard9 -- I palled around w/Frank Duenas, the R&R clerk, Dave Van Gieson, a kid from SC, Tom Tosti from Rochester NY, and Joe Blaustein from NYC. I now live in the Tampa FL area but orig from NJ....email me at ndontas@msn.com, I have a couple pics from back then, maybe 3-4.
Didn't care much for Long Binh. Had to go there for maintainance, etc, etc. Got pretty good at getting out the gates ,past MPs and checkpoints and catch a ride to Saigon. Those were the days
that was home to me in 1970. the day workers did what we did not want to do.the women would short time for a couple $ .one of the best places to be if you where in viet nam. as long as you where not in LBJ( long bien jail)
@Rico8458 me too, wonder if they knew, and if they did maybe they were tellin the VC, hey listen we give you jobs and you make money I dunno, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink it.
