  • This show never failed to be mind-numbing.

  • I think Brian Blessed beard found a new home on Patrick Stewards head

  • "How about you, Sleptus WithMyDaughterus?"

  • 'Not slept, Caesar'. Worst thing to say.

  • I love how you can feel the HAM building up during the scene.

  • The hamminess is OVER 9000!

  • "Ahh, only once!" I lol'd.

  • 2:26, receive ham

  • Two people slept with Claudia.

  • I wonder if real historical Livia committed those crimes that the author of the novel, Robert Graves, imputes on the Livia of the book. I do not believe it. And, also I do not believe that Tiberius was a sexual pervert.Tiberius was cruel and had a soul full of rancor, and was also very unpopular, but was not a pervert. Romans were quick to accuse of debauchery to men of power who did not offer them "Panem et Circenses".

  • *Raises hand* I haven't, Caesar. Can...can I have twenty minutes with her?

  • Blessed's expression in this scene is immortal. Pure Texas rattlesnake.

  • After hearing about Penn State, this came to mind.

  • She even slept with Gordon!

  • "Not slept? You mean standing up, or in the street, or on a bench somewhere? Not slept?"

  • Figures the beard was muffling his voice all this time. He's not in some GPS two feet from your face, he's shouting from THE BACK OF THE SET.

  • Let Whore!...Whore!...WHORE!!!! BE YOUR MOTTO!!

  • One person hasn't slept with Julia.

  • IS THERE ANYONE IN ROME WHO HAS NOT SLEPT WITH MY DAUGHTER?!!!

  • 3:28

I guess shouting runs in the family.

  • As brilliant as "I, Clavdivs" is, and as great as BRIAN BLESSED's performance is, he is pretty miscast. Especially physically - the real Augustus was small and very skinny. It's weird, considering that the rest of the book/series is very careful to reflect historical accuracy, that its portrayal of him is nothing like the actual historical figure. The real Augustuc was cold and ruthless (Octavian in HBO's "Rome" is much closer).

  • @enigma19833 I think trying to reconstruct a character who died 2000 tears ago is tough, we can only surmise what he was really like with his family.

  • Me, watching the beginning: "No, there's no way that can be BRIAN BLESSED."

BB: "IS THERE ANYONE IN ROME WHO HAS NOT SLEPT WITH MY DAUGHTER?!"

    Me: O.O "It is him!"

  • Apparently a lot of the extras (the senators) in this scene didn't know what was going on and they were told not to laugh, yet a few of them couldn't help it. Thankfully you don't see their faces.

If you think about it out of context, like you just walked in and the emperor is yelling at few dozen senators for sleeping with his daughter, it is kinda funny.

  • BRIAN BLESSED is awesome. When he's not being a LARGE HAM and is giving subtle performances he's absolutely electrifying. When he IS being a LARGE HAM he's absolutely entertaining. We need more actors/men like him.

  • One voter has not slept. You mean had her standing up, perhaps? Or in the street or on a bench?

  • @PassiveSmoking IS THERE ANYONE ON YOUTUBE WHO HAS NOT VOTED WITH MY DAUGHTER?! AND WHO ORDERED THE LARGE HAM?!

  • I fully expected that scroll to just explode when it hit the ground.

  • @DJRozwell It probably took a few takes to get it to stop exploding.

  • BRIAN BLESSED WANTS TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANYONE IN ROME WHO CAN YELL BETTER THAN HE CAN!

  • One person in Rome hadn't slept with his daughter.

  • 2:26 Brian Blessed can actually make his shout echo before he even openes his mouth!

  • DID SOMEBODY ORDER A LARGE HAM?!

  • And you just know those roman legionnaires were so eager to take those guys out was because they had slept with his daughter too and wisely did not want to risk being questioned.

  • Augusts disliked

  • 1 Man in rome did not sleep with his daughter... and dislikes having it pointed out

  • I'm not at all used to seeing Brian Blessed without his beard. Took me a moment to recognize him.

  • 2:26

  • 0 dislikes FTW.

  • I kept turning in down in fear of the inevitable shout. xD This seems like it should be serious but it was a little narmy for me. x'D *also from TV Tropes*

  • @TheAcriNom lmao Yeah I knew after the first fve mins of silence there'd be an outburst coming. Just about the only reason Brian Blessed ever got hired for anything.

  • TV tropes brought me here.

  • @Adhoc57 Me too. :P

  • @Adhoc57 My girlfriend brought me here. What does that say about me? What does that say about HER?

  • Press 4, wait five seconds, receive ham.

  • "Shortus Flaccidus Penis? You slept with her as well. I can't believe that!"

  • BRIAN BLESSED? Without the beard? BLASPHEMY!

  • Great scene. However, am I the only one who continually finds it somewhat bizarre to see Blessed without his trademark beard?

  • Comment removed

  • Hard to recognize him without his beard.

Whats up with the squeaky shoes?

Wow, that's impressive that you could actually be too slutty for Rome.

  • @ferretyluv Augustus was actually fairly prudish, unlike his successors. He had a big public campaign to encourage monogamy and encourage single people to get married (mostly because he wanted to repopulate the Empire after so many of the young men had died in the Civil Wars). Augustus' campaign was seriously undermined by Julia sleeping with everyone in the city. (Again, Augustus was mostly interested in this campaign due to his desire to shoot the birthrate up, not due to moral concerns).

  • @SAPattersong You are right that the concern wasn't only moral, and that repopulating Rome was in his mind, but I don't think you can make a pronuncement to the extent it would have been the "only" concern to the detriment of a moral outlook on the question as well. After all, Augustus was very much interested in promoting whatever was "proper", with a relatively simple lifestyle, home-made clothes and the like, for instance. It might have been all about appearance and politics, maybe not.

  • Hard to recognize him without his beard.

Whats up with the squeaky shoes?

  • I've just realised that the beginning of this is a 3 minute long take! That's phenominal.

  • Haha I always laugh when Augustus looks back at :35

  • This clip has made me watch the entire series. I can't believe TV used to be this good!

  • Augustus Ceasar needs to loosen up. So his daughter sleeps around.

  • At 2:26, turn the volume up (not for Caesars yelling).

I think theres a slight echo, because you can hear the start of his yelling before it happens.

Is it possible for Brian Blessed to yell so loud, it reverberates BACK through time?

  • "IS THERE ANYONE IN ROME WHO HAS NOT SLEPT WITH MY DAUGHTER!!!!!!!"

  • "AAAH only once,thats all..."

  • A great example how to avoid narm and cheese while using expressive, theatralic delivery to a "serious" effect.

  • Farty sandle!

  • I don't know if I could take hearing my daughter scream like that, do matter what she did.

  • Heh.

And the line of men just kept going and going and going..........

  • The best of what television could be !! This series was astonishing, well written, well acted, amazing.... nothing I've seen since compares to this ....

  • "not slept" a cool little reference to an old OLD Joke.

"did you sleep with my wife?" "no mate we were awake all night"

  • Brian Blessed with no beard? Madness!

  • People keep mentioning the book but how come no one mentions that in the book Julia only acted this way because, when she went to Livia for advice on how to attract Tiberius, Livia gave her this "distillation of the crushed bodies of green flies" or something to make her sexual appetite insatiable? She just did it out of spite to make sure this would happen.

  • You may not like Julia but remember that she was the only family member aside from Postumus and Germanicus to be nice to Claudius.

  • Apparently it only took one 'take' to secure this scene. Notice the 'atmosphere' before he loses his temper. An utterly brilliant piece of production no one anywhere will ever equal.

  • lmao @ 01:59

  • The prize goes to Mr. "not slept"

  • @Amebelodon

Well... I do think it's one of the most hilarious scenes, but Caligula just tops the list. And I still believe that his "WHERE ARE MY EAGLES" line is also very good.

  • - Ah, only one, that's all. - Not slept, you might have done it standing, perhaps, or in the street, or on a bench, not slept...

    Brilliant in all ways!

  • Ah, only once. That's all.....LOL

  • They're all going to die......

  • BRIAN BLESSED cannot go several minutes without screaming

  • needs to be seen in context for full enjoyment.

For a while the only thing you can hear is Augustus' sandals squeaking, the only thing you can see his priceless expression and the backs of the heads of this multitude.

None of them can hold his gaze. They're waiting for the inevitable explosion.

    brilliant.

  • Julia was framed.

  • haha oh julia..

possibly one of the best scenes from i, claudius!

  • Amo I, Claudius Excelcior

  • BRILLIANT!

  • Great acting

  • Better then The Sopranos!

  • To this day I still feel sorry for poor Augustus; It seems that he was the only one who did not sleep with his daughter.

  • @tss77

I wonder if that is even true...

  • @tss77 He stole her children so he could raise them. He deserved it.

  • @tss77 What about Augustus' son?

  • @tss77 Unless he did :O

  • @tss77 Brian Probably got in her pants after filming the movie.

  • to th guy comparing Rome to this, well you could say Rome is the prequel cos it ends where this begins..after a gap.

  • haha, i told my GF the same thing. I am showing her the second/last season of Rome, and i said if we can find I Cladius on DVD it would make a perfect conclusion to Rome.

  • claudius*

  • Real acting, amazing.

  • Wow. The directing of this scene alone makes "Rome" tv series look like MTV Celebrity Deathmatch.

Herbert Wise, if I remember well. I think he was the best tv director, still is. His work in unsurpassable.

And yeah, by Jove, Brian is a genius of acting Blessed with talent.

  • I, Claudius is a little too involved for the "pwn" crowed. Stick to the video games for now.

  • @TubularMonkey

I just wanted to say that I really don't like your comment and find it quite insulting. Do you still feel this way or have you matured over the couple years since you left this comment?

  • Brian Blessed's a genius!

  • No, but he was an excellent actor. Stop today's cheapening of the word "genius."

  • For me, he's a genius. Agree to disagree.

  • His status as a genius isn't subject to any subjectivity. It is or is not an objective fact.

    Reject today's dictatorship of relativism.

  • The status of 'agree to disagree' isn't subject to any subjectivity. It is or is not an objective fact.

  • Yeah sebenoky, it is a fact if you can agree on your definition of "genius". Which you can't, you'll be arguing all day.

You could broaden the definition wide enough to include Brian Blessed I suppose, but do you need to? He was a bloody good actor. (This series was jam-packed with them) That's surely enough.

It's true people chuck around the word genius rather a lot on the web (sometimes with an 'o' in it, which is a cause for merriment)

  • I love this scene. ^_^

Augustus: "Is there anyone in Rome who has not slept with my daughter!?"

Me: "Hey! Don't have a heart attack, old dude!"

    lol

  • Augustus: "Is there anyone in Rome who has not slept with my daughter!?"

    Yes... Augustus

  • I would fuckin kill that lil bitch fuckin little spoiled whore!

  • She's Ancient Rome's equivalent to Paris Hilton!

  • In the Graves book and the series, they took an interesting spin on Augustus--he was portrayed kind of like a benign goof. But here you really see the power of Augustus!! this is an awesome scene!

  • one will perceive more easily if one compares with today and old time

    Like this; today 08ad =2008 161= 2161 commodus

    44bc= 1956 caesar murder

    100bc =1900 julius caesar born

  • Poor Augustus he was the only one it seems who did not sleep with his daughter.

  • "Not slept. You mean it happened in the street or standing up? NOT SLEPT?!"

    Greatest mini series ever XD

Is it wrong that I dream of remaking this? >>

  • No. Dreams are hope, never give up what you want.

  • Thanks :3

I personally think this series was perfect, there are just so many things I'd love to do as homage and honor it.

  • Well it's obvious that Roman citizen got his happy ending from Julia.

And no it's not wrong. Too bad HBO tore down their Roman sets in Italy. It would be a perfect place to resurrect the series. And bring back Patrick Stewart. And Jonathan Rhys-Davies. And Derek Jacobi.

  • Yeah I know. Those were amazingly good sets and I think the most accurate ones ever made about Roman times. It actually looked like a city as opposed to a collection of pillars.

Oh I already plan on calling those guys. AND Brian Blessed. Even if they don't play their original roles, I would want them to have at least cameos as Senators or something ^_^

  • Ahhhhhh, only once? That's all? LOL

  • Brian Bleesed is GOD.

  • Did this really happen?

  • Yes Unfortunately. This all took place durring the Roman days :-)

  • what do you mean unfortunately, it must have been pretty good fun':)

  • it happened so often that with her second husband with whom she had 5 children people were astonished when they resembled their father,a man named Agrippa. she replied that she only had other partners when Agrippa got her pregnant. her third husband tiberius (third caesar after augustus) couldnt stand her because he knew about it, she tried to seduce tiberius while married to agrippa. very messed up

  • "Just answer the queston" :)

  • How did Livia manage to kill all those heirs?

  • Poison. =D

Brian Blessed is an acting god, but unfortunately, he fits as Augustus the way Denzel Washington would fit as Abraham Lincoln. No doubt he'd be fantastic in the role, but physically and vocally he's just all wrong: Augustus was always frail, sickly, and thin, and wasn't so boistrous as Brian Blessed is, with his powerful, hearty voice and thick body.

  • It's impossible to have a favorite scene from this series.

  • not slept muahahahahaha... nice one.

  • Poor Julia. Lustfulness aside, she was the only sweet and kind one in the whole family, and just about the only woman warm to Claudius. In the book it is explained that Livia laced her drinks with an aphrodisiac to make her libido insatiable.

  • verkaforever: No doubt you expect to be exiled from your country because of your sexual partners. She married 3 times for her father's pleasure, I suppose she decided she was big enough to make her own choices.

  • Stop screaming, Julia! You deserve to be sent away. If you can be big enough to sleep with all those men, you can be big enough to face the consequences!

  • GREAT! I'd react like that if I found out my daughter was a whore too.

  • Can you post the scene where Claudius addresses the senate as emperor for the first time? That was always one of my favorites?

  • IS THERE ANYBODY IN ROME WHO HAS NOT SLEPT WITH MY DAUGHTER? Brian Blessed delivers that line with a chilling anger that was his best moment in "I Claudius". I bought a BBC video of it many years ago & i still have not tired of watching it occasionally.

  • Who didn't sleep with his daughter????

  • Claudius didn't. ^_^

  • Fantastic

  • "Only once" ha ha ha

  • Excellent! Best series ever.

  • don't touch the figs lol

  • lol

  • Which one of them who'd slept with his daughter during sex?

  • i always thought brian blessed was a bit hammy until i saw this. Superb scene and the best tv series ever.

  • By far the greatest mini series of all time .Great British actors

  • "Not slept Caesar..."

"Not slept, you mean happened standing up perhaps? Or in the street or on a bench... not slept."

  • Excellent scene! One of the best in the whole series of I Claudius. Please post more if you can!!

  • Do you want to know my motivation to upload this particular scene on Youtube?

  • More PLEASE

  • @Ilovethingstoogreek

    Adachi BITCHES AND WHORES?

  • @Ilovethingstoogreek I'm curious as to why, yes.
