I wonder if real historical Livia committed those crimes that the author of the novel, Robert Graves, imputes on the Livia of the book. I do not believe it. And, also I do not believe that Tiberius was a sexual pervert.Tiberius was cruel and had a soul full of rancor, and was also very unpopular, but was not a pervert. Romans were quick to accuse of debauchery to men of power who did not offer them "Panem et Circenses".
As brilliant as "I, Clavdivs" is, and as great as BRIAN BLESSED's performance is, he is pretty miscast. Especially physically - the real Augustus was small and very skinny. It's weird, considering that the rest of the book/series is very careful to reflect historical accuracy, that its portrayal of him is nothing like the actual historical figure. The real Augustuc was cold and ruthless (Octavian in HBO's "Rome" is much closer).
Apparently a lot of the extras (the senators) in this scene didn't know what was going on and they were told not to laugh, yet a few of them couldn't help it. Thankfully you don't see their faces.
If you think about it out of context, like you just walked in and the emperor is yelling at few dozen senators for sleeping with his daughter, it is kinda funny.
BRIAN BLESSED is awesome. When he's not being a LARGE HAM and is giving subtle performances he's absolutely electrifying. When he IS being a LARGE HAM he's absolutely entertaining. We need more actors/men like him.
And you just know those roman legionnaires were so eager to take those guys out was because they had slept with his daughter too and wisely did not want to risk being questioned.
I kept turning in down in fear of the inevitable shout. xD This seems like it should be serious but it was a little narmy for me. x'D *also from TV Tropes*
@TheAcriNom lmao Yeah I knew after the first fve mins of silence there'd be an outburst coming. Just about the only reason Brian Blessed ever got hired for anything.
@ferretyluv Augustus was actually fairly prudish, unlike his successors. He had a big public campaign to encourage monogamy and encourage single people to get married (mostly because he wanted to repopulate the Empire after so many of the young men had died in the Civil Wars). Augustus' campaign was seriously undermined by Julia sleeping with everyone in the city. (Again, Augustus was mostly interested in this campaign due to his desire to shoot the birthrate up, not due to moral concerns).
@SAPattersong You are right that the concern wasn't only moral, and that repopulating Rome was in his mind, but I don't think you can make a pronuncement to the extent it would have been the "only" concern to the detriment of a moral outlook on the question as well. After all, Augustus was very much interested in promoting whatever was "proper", with a relatively simple lifestyle, home-made clothes and the like, for instance. It might have been all about appearance and politics, maybe not.
The best of what television could be !! This series was astonishing, well written, well acted, amazing.... nothing I've seen since compares to this ....
People keep mentioning the book but how come no one mentions that in the book Julia only acted this way because, when she went to Livia for advice on how to attract Tiberius, Livia gave her this "distillation of the crushed bodies of green flies" or something to make her sexual appetite insatiable? She just did it out of spite to make sure this would happen.
Apparently it only took one 'take' to secure this scene. Notice the 'atmosphere' before he loses his temper. An utterly brilliant piece of production no one anywhere will ever equal.
Well... I do think it's one of the most hilarious scenes, but Caligula just tops the list. And I still believe that his "WHERE ARE MY EAGLES" line is also very good.
For a while the only thing you can hear is Augustus' sandals squeaking, the only thing you can see his priceless expression and the backs of the heads of this multitude.
None of them can hold his gaze. They're waiting for the inevitable explosion.
haha, i told my GF the same thing. I am showing her the second/last season of Rome, and i said if we can find I Cladius on DVD it would make a perfect conclusion to Rome.
I just wanted to say that I really don't like your comment and find it quite insulting. Do you still feel this way or have you matured over the couple years since you left this comment?
Yeah sebenoky, it is a fact if you can agree on your definition of "genius". Which you can't, you'll be arguing all day.
You could broaden the definition wide enough to include Brian Blessed I suppose, but do you need to? He was a bloody good actor. (This series was jam-packed with them) That's surely enough.
It's true people chuck around the word genius rather a lot on the web (sometimes with an 'o' in it, which is a cause for merriment)
In the Graves book and the series, they took an interesting spin on Augustus--he was portrayed kind of like a benign goof. But here you really see the power of Augustus!! this is an awesome scene!
Well it's obvious that Roman citizen got his happy ending from Julia.
And no it's not wrong. Too bad HBO tore down their Roman sets in Italy. It would be a perfect place to resurrect the series. And bring back Patrick Stewart. And Jonathan Rhys-Davies. And Derek Jacobi.
Yeah I know. Those were amazingly good sets and I think the most accurate ones ever made about Roman times. It actually looked like a city as opposed to a collection of pillars.
Oh I already plan on calling those guys. AND Brian Blessed. Even if they don't play their original roles, I would want them to have at least cameos as Senators or something ^_^
it happened so often that with her second husband with whom she had 5 children people were astonished when they resembled their father,a man named Agrippa. she replied that she only had other partners when Agrippa got her pregnant. her third husband tiberius (third caesar after augustus) couldnt stand her because he knew about it, she tried to seduce tiberius while married to agrippa. very messed up
Brian Blessed is an acting god, but unfortunately, he fits as Augustus the way Denzel Washington would fit as Abraham Lincoln. No doubt he'd be fantastic in the role, but physically and vocally he's just all wrong: Augustus was always frail, sickly, and thin, and wasn't so boistrous as Brian Blessed is, with his powerful, hearty voice and thick body.
Poor Julia. Lustfulness aside, she was the only sweet and kind one in the whole family, and just about the only woman warm to Claudius. In the book it is explained that Livia laced her drinks with an aphrodisiac to make her libido insatiable.
verkaforever: No doubt you expect to be exiled from your country because of your sexual partners. She married 3 times for her father's pleasure, I suppose she decided she was big enough to make her own choices.
Stop screaming, Julia! You deserve to be sent away. If you can be big enough to sleep with all those men, you can be big enough to face the consequences!
