0:47 and 1:07 you can tell that his vibrato is not actually natural vibrato but actually just breaking of air flow. You can't voice the 'h' as in the two examples in actual vibrato but you can when you each 'fluctuation' of the 'vibrato' is voiced.

I absolutely agree that this is an incredibly difficult musical to do! I am a musical director myself and I can only find a few faults with this show overall. The acting is superb, the vocals are amazing, and the sets are inspired. My only two problems are found (1) with the pit (poor tempo and overall quality, and (2) with the blocking. The second is only because I envision it different and I find some parts to be awkward. Still UNBELIEVABLE PERFORMANCE!! I'm just a critic :-)

As someone who grew up with voice teachers, this guy has a promising vocal quality. Forget the body. Listen to the way he hits the notes and open his mouth for vowel formation. If he continues to study with a bel canto maestro, he will do the song in its original key.

It is quite unfortunate that the recording turned out this way really... To hear it live was a totally different experience that was almost majestic. The pit was recorded onto a single track, with no live or post production mixdown. Being the FOH engineer for this show, I can definitively say it sounded better in room :).

I do think he needs to put energy in interpretation, cause in some places he's just singing too pretty instead of putting across the despair of the song. And that's just a shame. But hey, he has plenty of time to get a bit more life experiences, so maybe in a year or two we'll see him on Broadway!
