Does anybody know if there was any musical relationship between Illinois Jacquet and "Dizzy" Gillespie? I haven't heard much of his music, but their styles seem similar. Was one influenced by the other?
@EagleOnTheRhine I know that Dizzy Gillespie was a member of the Cab Calloway's orchestra from 1939 till late in 1941 and Illinois Jacquet joined the Cab Calloway's orchestra in 1943. Please check out and "like" the facebook page for Illinois Jacquet. There is an event planned in Jacquet's honor for May 2011 in Phoenix, AZ.
I have a version of this by the Ted Heath big band, but is quicker by some way.
As much of a fan as I am of Ted Heath, I have to say I prefer the tempo here.

They played together and in the same styles and venues over many periods, and finally in the JATPhilharmonic events sponsored by Norm Granz.
