Franco
miguelardos is right-we all spend, too much time comparing singer's, as if one is better than another. No, at this level of artistry, it is about different interpretations. We should leave it at that.I think we could learn more about all the singers we listen to, IMHO.
Franco 40.
@Miguelardos What a mistake to compare singers! Kaufmann, Bjorling, Del Monaco, Lanza, Martinelli, everyone has his own style and his own beauty! Why shall we necessarily compare and argue who is better or even the best? They are singing not boxing.
@alexgomez2....I agree with you that Bjorling was not known as a good actor. Kaufmann is charismatic, has great stage presence and good operatic acting skills.
@Chazzan805 Jonas is one of the most famous living tenors today. He has done a large spectrum of roles from singing Wagner to Massenet. His voice is dark, and that is what people will either love or hate. Personally, I think his interpretation of the flower aria, or even his Done Jose as a whole is brilliant.
@jglass54 - Then you see the person and understand tht this macho voice corresponds to a young tenor who has an amazing stage presence (something Bjorling lacked). In other words, I concur with you, Bjorling is a singer you want to listen to but not see while Kaufmann is a singer you want to see and the want to also listen. Nowadays, Jonas Kaufmann stands at the pinacle. A great voice, a great stage presence, great acting, what's left?
I did not like it. Too heavy/baritonal.

Voce e interpretazione fuori repertorio.

An acceptable Amor ti Vieta, despite the phrasing lapses, but not within hailing distance of Bjorling's.

Listen to Martinelli's amor Ti Vieta and compare with Kaufmann's.
Draw your own conclusions

I"ve been away from opera for some time. Who is Jonas Kaufmann? Definitely not crazy about the dark voice.

I love his dark, warm, sensitive special voice. And if you don't like him, don't listen.
And he gives all his heart in his songs. That is important to me. Jonas we love you!!

I like Jonas Kaufmann, but his voice is just too dark for this role. Listen to Bjoerling sing this and you'll know what this aria should sound like.
