Actually I'm pretty sure you can amass 16gigs of RAM easily for about under 300 bucks, but you have to remember that you won't be able to fully take advantage of that amount of memory unless you're running a 64bit machine that's either Windows 7, or something homebrew or something. I've got a 64-bit Windows 7 running on a 64-bit 8 core CPU, perfect for pushing memory around when it comes to video editing.
